The cheapest Xbox Series X upgrade is often the one you can avoid: first identify whether you are running out of storage, missing a display feature, or need better audio or controller charging. Check what your console and existing accessories already support, then spend only on the problem you actually have.
Start by identifying what is limiting your setup
Before shopping, name the friction you want to fix: not enough room for games, a display that does not support a feature you want, audio or communication that is inconvenient, or a controller that is often out of charge. Xbox Series X already supports external storage, modern display features, and most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories, so replacing equipment is not automatically necessary.
- Storage: Decide whether you need inexpensive extra space or want an expansion option Xbox says matches internal storage performance.
- Display: Check your current TV or monitor’s specifications and settings before considering a replacement.
- Audio or charging: Test your existing headset and controller setup; treat a new headset or charging solution as an optional convenience upgrade.
Xbox documents the console’s specifications and accessory compatibility on its Xbox Series X product page.
Choose storage based on the kind of upgrade you need
If storage pressure is the problem, Xbox documents two different paths: a standard standalone USB external hard drive and a Storage Expansion Card. They are not interchangeable performance claims. Xbox says its Expansion Cards provide added game storage at the same performance as the console’s internal storage; its USB HDD documentation confirms support for external drives but does not make that same performance claim for generic USB drives.

| Option | What Xbox documents | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| USB external HDD | Series X supports USB 3.1 external HDDs, and Xbox’s FAQ says standard standalone hard drives are compatible. | Compare current local price and capacity. Xbox’s cited specifications do not establish that a generic USB HDD runs every Series X|S-optimized game directly or performs like the internal SSD. |
| Storage Expansion Card | Connects through the dedicated expansion port and matches internal storage performance, according to Xbox. | Compare current price and capacity against your needs. This is the documented choice if matching internal storage performance matters to you. |
Xbox’s Series X FAQ describes an Expansion Card as connecting to the dedicated port and providing added game storage at the same performance. The Xbox accessories catalog has listed Seagate and WD_BLACK Expansion Card variants, but catalog prices and availability change. Check current local listings rather than treating old catalog figures as today’s best value.
- Estimate how much additional space you actually need; do not pay for capacity you are unlikely to use.
- Decide whether the documented internal-performance match of an Expansion Card is important for your use.
- Compare the current price per capacity for compatible options where you shop, and verify the exact product and connection before buying.
Check your current display before buying a new one
Xbox lists true 4K gaming, up to 120 FPS, HDMI 2.1, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and AMD FreeSync for Series X. The 4K-at-up-to-120-FPS capability requires both supported content and a supported display; it is not a promise that every game runs at that resolution and frame rate.

- Look up the exact model of your TV or monitor and confirm which features it supports.
- Check the display’s settings and the console’s connection path before assuming a feature is unavailable.
- Prioritize the feature you will use—such as 4K, 120 FPS support, or VRR—rather than buying a new screen based on a single headline specification.
Xbox’s current supported-feature list is on its Series X specifications page. The available specifications do not establish a particular budget display as the right choice, so compare exact models and current prices before replacing a working screen.
Make audio and controller charging optional upgrades
Xbox says most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories are compatible with Series X, including controllers and headsets. Try the gear you already own before replacing it. If audio quality, communication, or charging is a real annoyance, Xbox’s accessories catalog lists headset and controller charging categories, including the Xbox Stereo Headset and Wireless Headset and stands and charging solutions.

Those catalog categories do not establish that every model or third-party accessory is right for every budget. Check compatibility and current price for the exact item. A new headset or charging dock is a convenience purchase, not a required Series X upgrade.
Use a check-first budget plan
- Write down the problem. Storage, display, audio, or charging—not “upgrade everything.”
- Check what you already have. Confirm your display’s specifications and test existing controllers, headsets, and accessories.
- Choose the relevant path. For storage, compare USB external HDD support with the Expansion Card’s documented performance match; for other needs, buy only the accessory that addresses the specific friction.
- Verify the exact item and today’s price. Xbox’s catalog and retailer inventory can change, so confirm compatibility, capacity, and local availability before checkout.
