What you are uploading
A Nitrogen map is an externally generated world. The dedicated server does not discover it from a save-game slot; it looks for the generated-world directory in its user-data tree and then loads the name selected in its configuration. That distinction explains the most common failed uploads: placing the map in save_game, zipping the wrong directory level, or uploading files without changing the server’s world selection.

Use WORLD_NAME below as a placeholder for the exact folder name Nitrogen created. Preserve capitalization, spaces, underscores, hyphens, and every other character. The name used in the folder and the name entered as GameWorld must match character-for-character.
Prepare the map and record its exact name
Generate the world in Nitrogen
- Generate the map in Nitrogen using the settings you want for terrain, towns, roads, and wilderness.
- When generation finishes, identify the output directory. Do not rename it before uploading; record the folder name as
WORLD_NAME. - Keep the complete output. Copy the entire folder rather than selecting only files that look like heightmaps or prefabs. The server needs the generator’s full output structure.
Find the Windows output
On a Windows client, generated worlds are normally stored at %APPDATA%7DaysToDieGeneratedWorldsWORLD_NAME. You can paste that path into File Explorer’s address bar, then replace WORLD_NAME with the actual directory name. This is the client’s data root; it is not necessarily the dedicated server’s data root.

Check the folder before packaging
- Open the Nitrogen output folder and confirm that it contains the files and subfolders produced by the generator.
- Do not put the output folder itself inside another same-named folder when copying it. The desired final path has one
WORLD_NAMEdirectory immediately belowGeneratedWorlds. - Keep a local copy of the original output. It gives you a clean rollback source if an upload is interrupted or a server update exposes a compatibility problem.
Build the archive with the required layout
Most hosting panels can extract a zip, and FTP can transfer one as well. The archive’s internal layout matters more than its filename. Create a temporary staging directory anywhere on your computer and build exactly two top-level folders in it.
Create the two top-level folders
- Create a staging directory, for example
NitrogenServerUpload. - Inside it, create an empty folder named
save_game. Leave it empty because the map is generated externally; the server will create a save after the world starts. - Inside the staging directory, create
user_data. - Inside
user_data, createGeneratedWorlds. - Copy the complete Nitrogen output into
user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME.
Your staging directory should therefore look like this:

- Open the staging directory so that
save_gameanduser_dataare visible side by side. - Select both folders and create a zip archive.
- Open the finished zip to verify that its first level is
save_game/anduser_data/.
When the archive is opened, it must not show NitrogenServerUpload/save_game/ and NitrogenServerUpload/user_data/. That extra wrapper directory causes a one-level nesting error after extraction. The archive can have any filename, but a descriptive name such as nitrogen-WORLD_NAME-upload.zip makes it easier to identify in a host panel.
Use the archive as a structural test
Before uploading, expand the archive tree and verify the complete path user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME/. If you instead see user_data/user_data/, GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME/WORLD_NAME/, or a path beginning with an unrelated staging-folder name, rebuild the zip. Fixing the structure locally is faster than diagnosing a server that silently falls back to its default world.
Upload and extract on the dedicated server
A dedicated server is a separate Steam tool, identified as app 294420, rather than the data directory used by your game client. Your host may expose the files through a web file manager, an FTP account, or both. The labels differ, but the operation is the same: transfer the zip, extract it into the server’s user-data root, and confirm that the extracted folders are in the live data tree.

File-manager workflow
- Open the host’s file manager and navigate to the server user-data area. Do not stop in a temporary upload or staging directory created by the panel.
- Upload the zip archive.
- Use the panel’s Extract, Unarchive, or equivalent command in that user-data area.
- After extraction, confirm that the live path is
user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAMEand thatsave_gameis alongsideuser_data, not inside it. - If the panel offers an activation or world-selection action, leave the file manager only after extraction has completed and the folders are visible at their final paths.
FTP workflow
- Connect to the FTP account supplied for the dedicated server.
- Navigate to the server’s user-data root, as opposed to a general account home directory or a panel-only upload folder.
- Transfer the zip archive in binary mode if the client asks for a transfer type.
- Extract it using the host’s archive tool, scheduled task, or control-panel action. If FTP provides no extraction capability, use the host’s file manager after transferring the archive.
- Inspect the resulting directories and confirm the same two-level path:
user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME.
Hosts that do not expose the needed path
If you can upload files but cannot reach the server’s user-data or GeneratedWorlds directory, the map cannot be installed through ordinary save-file controls. Ask the host whether it supports zip extraction or FTP access to that path, and whether it provides a world-name or activation control. A host that exposes only save slots may require a different installation method or may not support externally generated worlds.
Select the uploaded world instead of Navezgane
Extraction alone does not select the map. The dedicated server reads its launch and world settings from serverconfig.xml, or from equivalent fields in the host panel. A server left at its default world value can start Navezgane even when the Nitrogen files are perfectly placed.
Set the world name
- Stop the server before editing its configuration, unless the host explicitly supports safe live editing.
- Open
serverconfig.xml, or open the panel field that controls the game world. - Set the
GameWorldvalue to the exactWORLD_NAMEdirectory name. Do not enter the parent nameGeneratedWorlds, the zip filename, or a path. - Save the configuration.
- Use the host’s Activate World action if one exists, then restart the server. If there is no separate activation button, a normal restart applies the saved setting.
Existing world names are valid GameWorld values. The key requirement is identity: the value must equal the uploaded folder name exactly. For example, if the directory is Snowline_2400, use Snowline_2400, not snowline_2400 or Snowline 2400.
Understand what the empty save folder does
The empty save_game directory in the upload package is intentional. It reserves the expected top-level location while telling the server that no pre-existing player save is being transferred. On the first successful start, the server creates the save data associated with the selected generated world. Do not move the Nitrogen output into that folder to “make it visible.”
Know which data root you are using
The client and dedicated server have separate data roots. A map visible in your Windows profile does not automatically become visible to a remote server. The Windows client path is normally %APPDATA%7DaysToDieGeneratedWorldsWORLD_NAME; the server has its own user-data root determined by the installation and host.

Custom server locations
The dedicated server can relocate generated data and saves through the UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder settings. If either setting is customized, the apparent default directory may be empty while the server is correctly reading another location. Check the active values before uploading, and place the archive contents in the user-data root that the running instance actually uses.
How a path mismatch appears
- The panel shows the upload as complete, but the server log behaves as though no custom world exists.
- The file manager displays
GeneratedWorldsin one directory whileUserDataFolderpoints elsewhere. - Changing
GameWorldhas no visible effect because the selected folder is outside the configured data root.
Resolve these symptoms by locating the active user-data root first, then checking the extracted path beneath it. Do not create a second competing GeneratedWorlds directory unless the configured path requires it.
Check generator and game-version compatibility
Correct packaging cannot overcome an incompatible world format. Compatibility varies by game branch and generator version. Current 7D2D Wiki guidance for version V3.2 reports that Teragon and xEgen outputs work on that branch, while NitroGen and KingGen worlds may not load. Treat that as version-specific community guidance, not a universal rule for every server release.
Before replacing an existing world
- Record the server’s exact game version or branch and the Nitrogen version used to generate the map.
- Check whether the generator output is known to load on that branch. Older NitroGen maps deserve particular caution when the server has moved to a newer version.
- Back up the current server data and configuration.
- Test the generated world on a separate instance or maintenance window before deleting the existing world.
If a map worked on one branch and fails after an update, restore the backup and test a compatible branch rather than repeatedly changing folder names. A version mismatch can produce the same apparent result as a bad upload: the server starts normally but does not load the intended world.
Choose a hosting route by capability
Host names and panel labels change, so evaluate the route by what it lets you do. The following checks distinguish a workable installation path from one that only supports ordinary save management.

Troubleshoot a server that loads Navezgane
Work through these checks in order. Each one tests a different failure mode, so changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
1. Verify the archive root
Open the zip or the extracted directory. The first level must contain save_game and user_data. If both are inside another folder, move the contents up one level or rebuild the archive from the two selected folders.
2. Verify the generated-world path
Navigate to user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME. The Nitrogen files must be inside that directory. Correct errors such as user_data/GeneratedWorlds/WORLD_NAME/WORLD_NAME by moving the inner contents up one level, preserving the single folder named WORLD_NAME.

Copy the directory name from the file manager and compare it with GameWorld or the panel’s activation field. Check case, punctuation, spaces, and trailing characters. A visually similar name is not sufficient.
4. Confirm extraction into the live root
Make sure the host extracted the archive into the server’s user-data root, not merely into a web panel’s temporary upload directory. If the files disappear after a restart, they were probably never placed in the instance’s persistent data area.

5. Check custom folder settings
Review UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder in the active configuration. A custom setting can make you inspect the wrong directory while the server is reading another one.
6. Check version compatibility
Confirm the server branch against the generator output, with special attention to older NitroGen maps. If the path and name are correct but the map still fails, test a supported branch with a backup rather than editing the archive repeatedly.

7. Restart after every confirmed correction
Stop and start the server after changing the world setting or moving files. A running process may continue using the previously loaded world until it is restarted or explicitly activated through the panel.
Replace an existing world safely
- Stop the server and create a backup of the current user-data and save directories.
- Keep the original
GameWorldvalue and note the activeUserDataFolderandSaveGameFoldersettings. - Upload and extract the Nitrogen package alongside the existing data; do not delete the old world yet.
- Set
GameWorldto the new folder name and activate or restart. - Join the server and confirm that the expected terrain and spawn behavior appear.
- Only after a successful test should you consider removing old data. Retain the backup until the new world has been stable for the period your group requires.
This sequence preserves a recovery path if the generator output is incompatible, the host extracted the archive incorrectly, or players need the previous world restored.
