Choose the right action before you start
Your choice depends on whether the existing video’s URL must remain usable.

YouTube states that an existing upload cannot be replaced because every new video upload receives a new URL. If links, embeds, playlists, or social posts already point to the old address, account for that before deleting or re-uploading.
How YouTube uploads and publishes a video
Uploading and publishing are separate stages. During upload, YouTube imports your video file and begins processing it. During publishing, YouTube makes the finished upload available according to the visibility option you select. A file can therefore be uploaded today but remain private or unlisted until a later date.

YouTube converts the file to the highest available playback resolution. Processing time varies with the video’s quality, length, format, and current service traffic. Higher-quality HD and 4K files generally take longer to finish processing. Do not close your workflow prematurely if you still need to select visibility or verify that processing and checks have completed.
Upload a video from a computer
1. Open YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the YouTube account that owns the channel.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then choose Upload videos.
2. Select the file or files
Choose the video file from your computer. YouTube’s current help guidance allows up to 15 videos to be selected in one desktop upload session. Selecting several files starts separate upload entries that you must review individually.
Keep the original files until you have confirmed that the upload, processing, visibility, and any required edits are correct. An upload is not a substitute for your local backup.

3. Enter the video details
Add the title, description, thumbnail, and other available details. A YouTube video title can contain up to 100 characters. Keep the title accurate and make the description match what viewers will actually see.
Check the audience setting carefully. YouTube asks whether the video is made for kids, and additional audience or age-restriction choices can apply to the content. Select the setting that accurately describes the video rather than treating it as a promotional option.
4. Review the Checks page
The Checks page can identify potential copyright issues before publication. These checks run in the background and may continue while you finish the upload. YouTube cautions that “Copyright check results aren’t final.” A clear result is not a legal guarantee, and a detected issue may change as the system or a rights holder reviews the material.

Use the check as a risk signal: verify that you have permission for music, game footage, clips, images, and other material, and be prepared to change the video or its visibility if a claim appears.

On the Visibility step, select one of the available choices:

If the upload window closes before you choose a visibility setting, YouTube saves the video as private on the Content page. Open that entry later, finish the details, and select the intended visibility.
6. Save or publish
Choose Save or Publish, depending on the visibility workflow shown. A public selection makes the video available to viewers after YouTube accepts the upload and completes the relevant processing. A scheduled selection keeps it private until the scheduled time.
Upload a video from an Android phone
You can start from either the YouTube app or the YouTube Studio app. The exact button placement can change with app updates, but the current flow is:

- Tap Create.
- Select a video from the device.
- Add the title, description, audience information, and any other requested details.
- Choose the upload or publish control and confirm the visibility.
On Android, a square or vertical video that is three minutes or less is uploaded as a Short. If you intend a conventional long-form upload, check the file’s orientation and duration before starting; changing the file’s shape or length may change how YouTube classifies it.

A phone upload still needs time for processing. Keep the device connected to a reliable network and avoid deleting or moving the source file until the upload is confirmed. If the app appears to stop, check the video’s status in your channel rather than immediately starting multiple duplicate uploads.
Understand upload date, publish date, and processing status
The upload date records when YouTube imported the file. The publish date records when the video became public. Those dates differ when a video is uploaded as private or unlisted and made public later. A scheduled video remains private until its scheduled release time, so its public availability begins later than its upload.
Processing can also be staged. A video may become available at a lower resolution while YouTube continues creating higher-resolution versions. Longer files, 4K material, and periods of heavy traffic can extend the wait. If image quality appears limited immediately after publishing, allow processing to finish before diagnosing the source file.

How to delete a video permanently
Delete from YouTube Studio on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video you want to remove.
- Hover over its row and choose Options.
- Select Delete forever.
- Read the permanent-deletion warning, acknowledge it, and confirm by selecting DELETE FOREVER.
Verify the title, thumbnail, and channel before confirming. A busy channel can contain similarly named uploads, and the final confirmation applies to the selected video.
Delete from the Android YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app and go to your videos.
- Tap More beside the video.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when prompted.
Menu wording can vary slightly between app versions, but the action must be performed on the specific video entry you intend to remove.
What deletion changes
Deletion is permanent. YouTube begins removal immediately, and the video will no longer be searchable on YouTube. Associated watch-time data can remain in aggregate reports, but it is no longer attributed to the deleted video. Existing links, embeds, playlists, and references to that upload will not turn into links to a replacement.

Save a backup before confirming. If you might need the footage, project file, thumbnail, captions, description, or comments later, download or preserve those materials first. Do not treat deletion as a temporary way to hide a problem; use Private or Unlisted visibility when you may want the upload back.
Can you replace a YouTube video without losing its URL?
No. YouTube does not replace the file behind an existing upload. Every new upload receives a new URL, even when the new file is intended to correct the old one.
Use an edit instead when the underlying video can stay the same:
- Change the title or description.
- Change Private, Unlisted, Public, or scheduled visibility.
- Trim supported portions of the existing video.
- Update cards or the end screen.
- Replace or update the thumbnail where the channel’s available controls allow it.
An end screen requires a video to be at least 25 seconds long. If the video is shorter, use another way to direct viewers, such as a clear description or a pinned channel comment where appropriate.
Upload a new file only when accepting a new URL is practical. Before doing so, update places that use the old link, decide whether to leave the old upload available as a notice, and avoid deleting the old version until the new one is confirmed.

Why YouTube says you cannot upload another video today
YouTube limits the number of videos a channel can upload during a 24-hour period. The limit applies across desktop, mobile, and the YouTube API, and there is no universal number that applies to every channel.

Limits can vary by country or region and by channel history. Community Guidelines or copyright history can affect eligibility, so two channels may see different upload access under otherwise similar conditions.
“Daily Upload limit reached”
If YouTube displays “Daily Upload limit reached,” the official guidance is to try again in 24 hours. Repeatedly switching devices or upload methods does not create a separate allowance because the limit covers desktop, mobile, and API uploads.
Other checks before retrying
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended channel; a brand or secondary channel may have different history and access.
- Check the Content page for an upload that is still processing or already present, so you do not create an accidental duplicate.
- Review recent copyright or Community Guidelines notifications in YouTube Studio.
- Keep the source file and its details ready, then retry after the stated waiting period.
If the message is not the daily-limit error, read the exact wording. File, network, account, processing, and policy errors require different fixes; increasing the number of retries will not resolve a policy restriction.
A safe upload-and-delete checklist
Before uploading
- Keep a local copy of the video, thumbnail, captions, description, and project files.
- Confirm the channel and account you are using.
- Check orientation and duration, especially for an Android square or vertical file that may be three minutes or less and therefore upload as a Short.
- Check that the title stays within YouTube’s 100-character limit.
- Review music, game footage, images, and clips for permission or licensing issues.
Before publishing
- Watch enough of the processed video to catch missing audio, incorrect framing, or an incomplete upload.
- Review the audience and age-restriction settings.
- Read the Checks page, while remembering that copyright results are not final.
- Choose Private, Unlisted, Public, or Schedule deliberately.
Before deleting
- Confirm that deletion, rather than Private or Unlisted visibility, is actually required.
- Save a backup and preserve any metadata you may need.
- Check external links, embeds, playlists, and announcements that use the old URL.
- Understand that a later re-upload will have a new URL.
Common mistakes and their fixes
The upload finished, but nobody can watch it
Open the video’s visibility setting. It may still be Private because the upload window closed before a choice was made, or because it is waiting for a scheduled time. Select Public when you are ready for immediate availability.
The video looks blurry after publication
Allow processing to continue. YouTube creates higher-resolution playback versions after importing the file, and HD or 4K processing can take longer than standard-definition processing.
A copyright check looks clear, but you are still concerned
Treat the result as provisional. YouTube explicitly says copyright check results are not final. Recheck the rights for every third-party element and keep the video private or unlisted until you are comfortable publishing.
You deleted the wrong upload
Deletion is permanent, so the normal recovery path is unavailable. This is why matching the title and thumbnail and preserving a backup before confirmation matter. If you still have the source file, you can upload it again, but the new upload will have a different URL.
You need to fix one sentence but keep the link
Edit the title or description on the existing upload instead of deleting it. If the problem is in the footage itself, decide whether a trim or other available editing control is sufficient; otherwise a new upload is required and the URL will change.
