You can run OBS on a cloud desktop and send its output to YouTube Live while your own computer is off. The practical setup is to choose a VM that can handle your actual scenes and encoder, install and configure OBS, connect it to YouTube with a private stream key, then test the stream and plan for recovery. A cloud desktop does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming, and YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.

What a cloud desktop does—and what it does not

A cloud desktop is a remote computer hosted in a provider’s data center. OBS runs there, reads the media and other sources available to that machine, encodes the output, and sends it to YouTube. You connect to the desktop remotely to configure or maintain it; closing your remote-access client does not itself need to close OBS, but the VM must remain running.

This approach gives you control of OBS scenes, sources, plugins, and encoding settings. In exchange, you manage the VM, operating system, OBS, media storage, network path, monitoring, and recovery. There is no universally validated VM size for 24/7 OBS use: the right resources depend on the scene, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and workload. OBS states, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS system requirements (page dated August 25, 2021) are a starting point, not a performance guarantee.

Set up the cloud desktop and OBS

  1. Choose a VM for your actual workload

Check OBS’s published system requirements, then compare the VM’s CPU, any GPU or hardware-encoding capability, sustained performance, storage, outbound network capacity, and region. A simple static scene may impose a different load from a scene with several animated sources, filters, and audio processing. Do not assume a machine meets your needs solely because it meets OBS’s minimum requirements. If your configuration depends on hardware encoding, verify the encoder is available to the VM and test it inside OBS.

  2. Prepare remote access, persistence, and recovery

Set up a way to reconnect to the desktop after disconnecting your local client. Store the OBS profile, scenes, media, and any required plugins on storage that persists through a VM restart; check exactly which disks persist under your provider’s configuration. Decide how you will restart OBS or the VM if either fails, and how you will notice a failure when you are not connected. Cloud providers’ restart and recovery controls differ, so verify those details for the service and operating system you choose.

  3. Install OBS and build the scene

Install OBS from its official website. Add the media sources, scene transitions, and audio routing your broadcast needs. For a first pass at output settings, OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard can help suggest settings, but it is not a test of 24/7 reliability. Confirm the media files are accessible to OBS on the VM; sources pointing to folders on your local computer will not automatically be available in the cloud.

  4. Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

If you have never streamed live on the channel, YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or reuse a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots, public notes, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

  5. Set output to fit the content, encoder, and network

In OBS, configure output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate for the material you are streaming and the VM’s tested encoding capacity. YouTube’s live encoder settings list bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the live-stream recommendations rather than bitrate tables for uploaded videos. YouTube recommends RTMPS. On the VM, available output choices may depend on its operating system, drivers, and GPU access, so verify the selected encoder is actually functioning as intended.

The VM’s outbound connection must sustain the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate and advises testing and monitoring stream quality. See YouTube’s streaming tips. A provider’s advertised network speed alone does not demonstrate sustained throughput or a reliable route to YouTube; check actual stream health during a realistic test.

  6. Test before relying on the stream

Run a test using representative motion, scenes, and audio rather than leaving an idle scene open. Check OBS for encoding or dropped-frame warnings, review YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm the public watch page plays with the expected picture and sound. Disconnect your remote desktop client and verify you can reconnect without stopping OBS. Separately test your recovery plan, such as restarting OBS or the VM, and decide how alerts or scheduled human checks will tell you that the stream has failed. YouTube recommends testing and continuous quality monitoring in its encoder settings guidance and streaming tips.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives

Transmission is not the same as recovery

A VM can keep OBS running while your home computer is off, but it does not remove failure points: OBS can stop, the VM can restart, the network path can falter, or YouTube can end the connection. Confirm how you will detect a stopped stream and regain access. Test recovery instead of assuming that a disconnected remote session or a provider’s general availability controls will restart OBS and restore the broadcast automatically.

Streams over 12 hours may not be archived

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan separate segments that end before the 12-hour threshold and start a new broadcast, and/or record a local backup if the VM has enough storage and resources. OBS recording adds disk use and encoding or write workload; test it alongside streaming, and account for where the recording will persist and how you will retrieve it. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Estimate the cost of continuous operation

A cloud desktop left running continuously incurs ongoing compute charges; GPU resources, disks, and outbound data transfer may add to the bill. Estimate the full workload for the VM’s region and configuration rather than relying on a generic monthly figure. Google Cloud documents how Compute Engine sustained-use discounts work, but that documentation is not a quote or benchmark for an OBS stream. Use the provider’s current pricing calculator and include compute, any GPU, storage, and transfer. Compare the resulting recurring cost and management time with a local computer left on and with a hosted service, while accounting for control over OBS and recovery needs.

Another way to keep a YouTube stream running

StreamNeo is the first hosted option to consider if your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a remotely managed OBS desktop: it loops from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card. It does not run OBS or stream from a camera; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; the service loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.

Troubleshooting a cloud OBS stream

  • YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, and check that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key. Regenerate a key if it may have been exposed.
  • YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream: Check the VM’s sustained outbound throughput and OBS’s bitrate, then lower bitrate or output demands if needed. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% network headroom and inspect its stream-health indicators.
  • OBS shows dropped frames: This commonly points to network delivery trouble; check the VM’s route and outbound stability. Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Distinguish network drops from encoding overload by checking OBS’s status and CPU/GPU use.
  • Encoding overload or choppy motion: The VM may not handle the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity under sustained load. Reduce output demands or scene workload, or choose a VM with suitable tested resources; minimum requirements alone do not establish capacity.
  • Media is missing after reconnect or restart: Check that sources use files present on persistent VM storage, not paths on your local computer or temporary storage that disappears on restart. Repoint sources and verify they play from the remote desktop.
  • The desktop disconnects: Reconnect through the provider’s remote-access method and inspect OBS and YouTube’s stream health. A dropped client connection does not prove OBS stopped, so check the actual broadcast before restarting it.
  • The live stream works but there is no replay: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use planned shorter segments or a tested local recording backup when an archive is essential.
