Push video on demand (Push VoD) is a way to deliver video by sending it to a viewer’s device before they ask to watch it. The device stores the video locally—often on a PVR-capable set-top box—so the viewer can select it later. The acronym PVOD is also used for premium video on demand, a different concept involving premium titles or access pricing.
How Push VoD works
- A service provider chooses or schedules video for delivery.
- The provider sends the selected content to a compatible device ahead of a viewer request. Some systems use spare broadcast capacity.
- The device, often a PVR-capable set-top box, stores the video locally. In Ofcom’s described example, content is held in a reserved part of the PVR.
- The viewer browses the stored titles and chooses one to watch.
Because the video is already stored on the device, the viewer does not have to wait for that title to download when selecting it. This mechanism does not guarantee that playback will always be buffer-free; the result depends on the service and equipment.
Push VoD compared with other video-on-demand terms
These terms describe different aspects of video services. Push VoD describes delivery and local storage; TVOD and SVOD describe how access is sold.
| Term | What it describes | Typical viewer experience |
|---|---|---|
| Push VoD | Delivery and storage method | Selected content is sent to a device and stored before the viewer requests it. ETSI describes Push VoD as loading content onto user devices for future use. |
| Pull or on-demand streaming | Delivery after selection | The viewer selects a title, which is then delivered or streamed. In general video on demand, users choose what to view and when. ITU’s VOD terminology describes this general model. |
| Near VoD | Staggered scheduled starts | The viewer chooses among scheduled starts of a program rather than receiving a fully individualized stream. Ofcom describes Push VoD in connection with near-VoD and PVR-capable set-top boxes. |
| TVOD | Transactional payment model | The viewer pays for an individual rental or purchase; rental access is often limited to a set period. The European Commission distinguishes transactional and subscription models. |
| SVOD | Subscription payment model | The viewer pays a recurring subscription for catalogue access. The European Commission discusses subscription and transactional services. |
| Premium VoD / PVOD | Premium positioning or access pricing | A premium title may be offered at a higher price. This is a separate use of PVOD; Amazon Ads uses the acronym for premium video on demand. |
Benefits and limits
- Playback can be ready sooner: the title is stored before selection, rather than first being delivered in response to that selection.
- Less reliance on a live broadband stream at viewing time: Ofcom’s historical UK account describes Push VoD in systems facing connectivity or bandwidth constraints. That account does not establish how a particular modern service performs.
- The available catalogue is limited by storage: a local recorder has finite capacity, so it cannot hold an unlimited number of pushed titles.
- It depends on compatible equipment and service: the PVR-capable receiver is part of the described implementation, but compatibility for a particular device, provider, or region should be checked rather than assumed.
What equipment do you need?
The described implementation uses a compatible device with local storage, commonly a PVR-capable set-top box. Before buying equipment, check with the TV platform or service provider that the device is supported in your region and works with its Push VoD service. The term alone does not establish compatibility with any current model.

Push VoD is not a YouTube livestream
Push VoD describes sending selected video to a viewer’s device for later playback. It is not a method for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7. StreamNeo is a separate cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: you upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Learn more at StreamNeo.
