Connect a compatible controller in Settings > Bluetooth, or use a compatible wired connection, then confirm that the specific JRPG supports gamepad input. Pairing proves only that the iPhone or iPad sees the controller; it does not add controller controls to an app that was designed for touch.
This guide explains the complete setup, how to check support before buying hardware, what to expect from Bluetooth and wired connections, and how to troubleshoot a game that still ignores a paired controller.

What decides whether a controller works
There are two separate connections to establish:
- Device connection: iOS or iPadOS must pair with, or recognize, the controller.
- Game support: the JRPG must be programmed to read game-controller input.
Apple’s controller documentation treats support as an app-level decision. A controller can appear as connected in Bluetooth settings while a particular game continues to accept only touch input. This is the most common source of confusion: successful pairing is not a compatibility guarantee.
Support can also change with the exact controller model, operating-system version, game version, device, and App Store storefront. Check the current listing or publisher support page for the title you intend to play instead of assuming that every iPhone RPG supports a gamepad.

Check these requirements first
- An iPhone or iPad running a version of iOS or iPadOS supported by both the controller and the game.
- A controller that Apple devices recognize, with its battery charged if it is wireless.
- The controller’s model-specific instructions for entering Bluetooth discovery mode.
- The exact JRPG installed from the relevant App Store storefront.
- A compatible cable and, where necessary, an adapter for a wired connection.
Apple’s developer documentation names DualShock 4, DualSense and Xbox controllers among supported third-party controller types. That does not mean every revision, firmware version or accessory works with every iPhone or iPad. Treat those names as examples of controller families that can work, then verify the particular model and OS combination.
Pair a Bluetooth controller with an iPhone or iPad
- Put the controller into discovery mode. Use the instructions for that exact model. The light or status indicator normally changes when the controller is ready to pair, but the button combination differs by controller.
- Open Bluetooth settings. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select the controller. Wait for its name to appear under available devices, then tap it. Apple’s concise instruction is: "Go to the Settings app on your iPhone. Tap Bluetooth, turn on Bluetooth, then tap the name of the device." The same settings path applies on iPad.
- Wait for the connected state. The controller should move from the list of available devices to the list of connected devices. If a pairing code or confirmation appears, follow the on-screen instruction.
- Start the JRPG. Open the game only after the connection is established. Some games detect a controller when they launch and switch their menus or prompts to a gamepad layout.
- Test several inputs. Check the directional controls, face buttons, menu button and any analogue-stick functions the game uses. A game may support a gamepad for navigation but still leave a particular action touch-only.
If the controller does not appear, turn it off and back on, leave discovery mode and re-enter it, and make sure it is not still connected to another phone, tablet, console or computer. Keep the controller close to the iPhone or iPad while pairing. If it appears under previously connected devices but will not connect, tap the information button beside its name, choose to forget the device, put the controller back in discovery mode and pair it again.
Use a wired controller
A wired connection can avoid wireless pairing, but it is not automatically simpler. The plug on the controller must match the port on the iPhone or iPad, and some combinations require an adapter. Apple specifically advises checking the connector and compatibility for the exact device and controller before purchasing an adapter.

- Identify the port on the iPhone or iPad and the connector on the controller or its cable.
- Confirm that the controller is compatible with that Apple device and OS version.
- Use the required cable or adapter, connecting the controller directly where possible.
- Open the JRPG after the connection is recognized and test its controls.
A wired connection does not bypass the game-support requirement. If the app has no controller implementation, it will still ignore a correctly connected wired pad. Avoid buying a generic adapter based only on the shape of the plug; electrical compatibility and support for the specific controller matter as well.

How to verify controller support for a JRPG
Read the current App Store listing
Look for an explicit statement such as “supports game pad controls” or a description of a dedicated gamepad interface. An ordinary description of a game as a turn-based RPG is not evidence of controller support. Store text can differ by country, device and app version, so check the listing shown in your own storefront.
Check the publisher’s support information
Publisher notes can add version-specific details that are absent from the store description. They may identify supported controller families or state the minimum iOS version. Recheck these details after a major game update because controller behavior can change between releases.
Look for an in-game controller interface
After pairing, a supported title may replace touch prompts with button labels or show a gamepad configuration screen. The presence of such a screen is useful confirmation, but its absence immediately after launch is not conclusive: some games require you to open an options menu, load a save or restart the app before switching input modes.
Do not treat a user review as proof
An App Store review can reveal that players want controller support, but a request is not a technical statement from the developer. Use official listing or publisher information for a buying decision.

These examples illustrate why title-by-title checking matters. The absence of a controller statement is not the same as a documented incompatibility, but it is also not a reason to promise that a controller will work.
Bluetooth versus wired: which setup fits your use?

Neither method is universally better. Choose Bluetooth when your controller and device are known to be compatible and you want a cable-free setup. Choose wired when the exact cable or adapter combination is documented for your hardware and the controller will remain near the device.
Can you use a PS5 controller with an iPad?
Apple’s developer documentation lists the DualSense among third-party controllers that Apple platforms can support, so a PS5 DualSense is a possible iPad controller. The practical test still has three parts: the exact DualSense model must pair with the iPad, the iPadOS version must meet the compatibility requirements, and the JRPG must implement controller input.

Customizing buttons on supported games
Apple provides game-controller settings that can let you customize buttons for supported games. This can help when a JRPG’s default layout is uncomfortable or when you need a different mapping for accessibility.
Customization changes how an already supported game interprets controller input. It cannot create controller support in an app that accepts only touch. If no buttons respond, first verify the game’s support statement and connection status instead of trying to solve the problem through remapping.
When a title has its own control menu, prefer the game’s documented options for actions that Apple’s system mapping does not expose. Keep a record of any non-default layout if you switch between several JRPGs; a mapping that feels natural in one title may make menu navigation awkward in another.
Troubleshoot a controller that will not work
The controller never appears in Bluetooth
- Confirm that the controller is actually in discovery mode, not merely powered on.
- Move it away from another device that may reconnect to it automatically.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on in Settings, then repeat the pairing process.
- Charge the controller and retry; a low battery can prevent reliable discovery.
- Check the controller manufacturer’s pairing instructions for that exact model.
The iPhone or iPad says it is connected, but the game ignores it
- Close and relaunch the JRPG after pairing so it can detect the controller at startup.
- Look for an in-game controller or input setting.
- Read the current App Store description and publisher support page for an explicit support statement.
- Test another title that explicitly advertises gamepad controls. If that title works, the first game is likely the limiting factor.
Only some controls respond
Partial input can mean that the game supports a limited set of actions, that it expects a different controller layout, or that its controller implementation has a version-specific bug. Check for a game update, review the title’s support notes and test the default mapping before changing system-wide button assignments.

The controller worked until an update
Record the iOS or iPadOS version, the game version and the controller model. Then check the publisher’s latest support information. Compatibility is version-dependent, so a previously working combination may require an app update, an OS update or a new pairing after a software change.
A wired controller is not recognized
- Confirm that the cable carries the required data connection rather than power only.
- Check that the adapter matches both connectors and is compatible with the exact Apple device.
- Disconnect other accessories temporarily and reconnect the controller directly.
- Verify the controller and game support independently; a working cable cannot make an unsupported JRPG accept gamepad input.
A practical decision process before buying hardware
- Choose the game first. Identify the specific JRPG and read its current listing or publisher support information.
- Write down the requirements. Note the minimum iOS or iPadOS version, named controller families and any game-version limitation.
- Check your device. Confirm the iPhone or iPad model, operating-system version and available port.
- Select the connection method. Bluetooth is usually the simplest if the controller is listed as compatible. Wired is sensible only when the cable and any adapter are confirmed for both devices.
- Pair or connect before launching. This gives games that detect controllers at startup the best chance to switch to their gamepad interface.
- Test the exact actions you need. Do not stop at “connected”; verify movement, menus, battle commands and any analogue controls used by the title.
If you play several JRPGs, repeat the support check for each one. A controller that is ideal for one game may provide no input in another because support is implemented separately by every app.
Keeping the setup reliable
- Keep the iPhone or iPad and controller on software versions supported by the game.
- Recheck the App Store listing after a major game update or OS change.
- Pair the controller before launching games that select their input method at startup.
- Forget and re-pair the controller if it remains listed but stops responding after switching between devices.
- Keep any adapter and cable identified with the device and controller combination for which it was confirmed.
- When asking a publisher for help, include the device model, iOS or iPadOS version, game version, controller model and whether the controller is Bluetooth or wired.
There is no complete, permanent catalog of controller-compatible JRPGs across every publisher. Storefront content, OS requirements and controller behavior can change, and regional listings may differ. For any title not explicitly documented here, verify the current official information before treating compatibility as guaranteed.
