To use a wired GameCube controller with an original Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, connect it through a GameCube Controller Adapter while the console is docked in TV mode. Plug both adapter USB plugs into the dock, connect the controller to the adapter, then press a controller button. The original Switch requires system menu version 5.0.0 or later.
What you need
- A wired GameCube controller.
- A GameCube Controller Adapter. Nintendo lists the adapter as sold separately for the original Switch setup.
- A Nintendo Switch dock and a TV-mode setup. The adapter connects to the dock, so this wired method is not documented for handheld or tabletop play.
Nintendo confirms previously released wired GameCube controllers work with Switch 2 through the adapter in TV mode. The console recognizes the connected controller as a standard USB controller. See Nintendo’s original Switch instructions and Switch 2 instructions.
Connect a wired GameCube controller
- Update the console. On the original Switch, Nintendo requires system menu version 5.0.0 or later. Nintendo’s cited Switch 2 setup instructions describe using the adapter but do not state a minimum system version.
- Put the console in TV mode. Place the Switch in its dock. Nintendo specifies TV mode for this adapter connection.
- Connect the adapter to the dock. Plug both of the adapter’s USB plugs into USB ports on the dock.
- Connect the controller. Plug the wired GameCube controller into an open port on the adapter.
- Register it. Press any button on the controller. The console should recognize it as a standard USB controller.

The wireless Nintendo GameCube Controller for Switch 2 is a separate product and does not replace the adapter for a wired legacy controller. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ confirms that the wireless controller works only with Switch 2, not the original Switch, and warns about compatibility with other games.

- One adapter supports up to four GameCube controllers.
- You can use a maximum of two adapters with one console.
- For five or more controllers, Nintendo specifies a second adapter and a self-powered USB hub. The hub must provide at least 500 mA per USB port for the adapter to work properly.
- Nintendo does not guarantee that every USB hub will work.
- Some games support up to eight players, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; the number of supported players depends on the game.

If the controller is not recognized
- Check that both USB plugs from the adapter are connected to the dock.
- Confirm the console is docked and in TV mode; Nintendo does not document this adapter setup for handheld or tabletop mode.
- On the original Switch, confirm the system menu is version 5.0.0 or later.
- Press a button on the controller after connecting it so the console can register it.
- If you are using a hub for multiple adapters, check that it is self-powered and supplies at least 500 mA per port. Nintendo cannot guarantee compatibility with every hub.
