Equip leather boots before stepping onto powder snow. With them on, you can walk across the blocks instead of sinking into them.
How to cross powder snow
- Equip leather boots in your armor slot before you enter the snowy area.
- Step onto the powder snow and walk across it while the boots remain equipped.
Minecraft’s official Java release notes say leather boots prevent players from sinking into powder snow. The Bedrock release notes describe the same effect: players wearing leather boots can walk on powder snow without falling in.

What happens if you enter without leather boots?
Powder snow acts as a trap block: entities that enter it sink into it. If you have already fallen in, get out promptly. Staying in powder snow for long enough can cause freezing, and frozen entities take damage, according to the Java release notes.
Leather boots and freezing are different protections
Leather boots are the specific protection for walking on top of powder snow. Separately, Minecraft’s Java release notes say that wearing any piece of leather armor prevents freezing. Do not confuse that cold protection with the boots’ movement effect.
