Yes—you can use a GameCube controller with Project64 if Windows recognizes the controller or its USB adapter as a gamepad. Connect it, verify its inputs in Windows, then map those inputs to an emulated Nintendo 64 controller in Project64. Project64 plays N64 games; it does not emulate GameCube games. Its current repository lists 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported systems: Project64.
What you need
- A Windows PC running Project64.
- A GameCube controller, either a USB GameCube-style pad or an original controller connected through a USB adapter.
- An adapter and driver that expose usable gamepad inputs to Windows.
There is no general-purpose GameCube-controller mode in Project64. The emulator reads the device Windows exposes, and you assign its controls to N64 buttons and stick directions.
Check that Windows detects the controller
- Connect the adapter to the PC and the controller to the adapter. If it has a mode switch, start with PC. While troubleshooting, connect directly to a USB port rather than through a hub.
- Press Win + R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller, choose Properties, and press its buttons and move its sticks.
Look for button responses and changing stick axes. The C-stick may appear as axes, a hat switch, or separate controls; triggers may appear as buttons or axes. If there is no response here, resolve the adapter, mode, USB, controller, or driver issue before changing Project64 settings.
Configure Project64
- Connect the controller before opening Project64. If it is already open, close and reopen the emulator after connecting it.
- Choose Options → Input Settings. Some builds put plugin selection under Options → Configuration → Plugins or show an Input (Controller) Plugin field. Labels and layout vary by build; the documented Input Settings path appears in Project64 issue reports: Project64 issue #2248.
- Start with the built-in Project64 input plugin. It is the simplest first attempt because it avoids adding another plugin.
- Select Controller 1, enable Plugged or Controller plugged in, and select the device that responded in Windows.
- If the built-in plugin does not recognize the device or lacks a setting you need, try N-Rage Input V2. Project64 documents both plugin options and their differing use cases in its support guidance.
- Enable XInput only if the adapter or a wrapper presents the device as XInput. Many generic USB adapters expose DirectInput or HID instead, and selecting the wrong input type can stop detection or create duplicate devices.
N-Rage provides options for device input, XInput, dead zone, sensitivity, stick range, profiles, and controller status, but its behavior can differ by Project64 build and adapter. Its documented settings are visible in the N-Rage header and configuration interface.

Map GameCube controls to the N64 controller
The N64 has one analog stick and four separate C buttons. The GameCube has a main stick and a C-stick, so the natural starting point is to map the main stick to the N64 stick and the C-stick directions to the four C buttons.
| N64 control | GameCube input |
|---|---|
| Analog stick | Main control stick |
| A | A |
| B | B |
| Start | Start |
| Z | Z |
| L | L |
| R | R |
| D-pad directions | Corresponding D-pad directions |
| C-Up, C-Down, C-Left, C-Right | Corresponding C-stick directions |
- Click the configuration field for an N64 control.
- Press the GameCube button or move the stick direction you want assigned. For analog axes, move the stick decisively in the requested direction.
- Repeat for each control, then apply or save the configuration. Clear an accidental binding before assigning it again.
If a game relies heavily on C-button camera controls, you can optionally map one or more C directions to GameCube X or Y for easier reach, leaving the C-stick for the remaining directions. That is a comfort preference, not a universally better layout.
Tune the analog stick
Start with the plugin defaults. If you need to adjust them, change one setting at a time and test again; controller wear, adapter behavior, and plugin scaling vary. N-Rage’s sample profile includes values such as a 5% dead zone, 50% sensitivity, 100% stick range, and disabled virtual corners. Those are sample configuration values, not proven ideal settings for every controller: sample N-Rage profile.
- Drift at rest: Increase the dead zone gradually. If the stick also drifts in Windows, the controller may be worn.
- Small movements do nothing: Lower the dead zone.
- Movement reaches maximum too quickly: Reduce sensitivity or stick range if the plugin provides those controls.
- Weak diagonals: Confirm the correct two axes are assigned; then consider virtual-corner settings if available.
- Reversed direction: Invert the affected axis in the plugin or adapter software, if supported.
A larger dead zone can mask minor drift but makes precise movement harder. A single setting cannot be recommended for every stick and adapter.

Choose a controller pak setting if the plugin offers it
Leave the default unless the game or feature you want requires another option. A Memory Pak stores game-specific controller data; a Rumble Pak enables force feedback where the game and full hardware/software chain support it; a Transfer Pak is for compatible N64/Game Boy functionality and requires additional configuration. Choose None only when appropriate for the game. N-Rage includes options for these pak types in its configuration interface. A GameCube controller’s rumble motor is not guaranteed to work through an adapter in Project64.
Adapt the setup to your controller and adapter
USB GameCube-style controller
This can be the simplest setup if it appears as a standard Windows gamepad. Device name and input type vary by manufacturer, so check its inputs in joy.cpl rather than assuming a particular mapping.
Original controller with a generic USB adapter
Use PC mode when the adapter offers it, and consult the manual for the exact model and revision. For example, the Mayflash W012 manual describes PC operation on Windows systems including Windows 10 and 11; that information does not establish the behavior of every Mayflash adapter. Generic adapters can differ in how they expose triggers, axes, and rumble.
Official Nintendo Wii U/Switch GameCube Adapter
Do not assume that its console-oriented workflow will work directly in Project64. Dolphin documents native GameCube adapter support and adapter-specific Windows considerations, but that is Dolphin-specific guidance—not proof that Project64 will detect the adapter without additional software. See Dolphin controller configuration and its official adapter guide.

Dedicated GameCube-to-N64 adapter
A purpose-built adapter may translate controls more directly than a generic USB gamepad adapter. Raphnet documents setup and controller translation for its GameCube-to-N64 adapter: adapter documentation. Compatibility depends on the exact model and connection path.

Windows does not register inputs
- Check the adapter’s PC mode and reconnect the controller firmly.
- Try another USB port without a hub; test the controller and adapter separately if possible.
- Check Windows for a driver problem and consult the exact adapter’s manual.
- Close Steam, reWASD, DS4Windows, AntiMicroX, and other remapping tools temporarily.
Project64 mappings cannot fix a device that produces no input in Windows.
Windows detects it, but Project64 does not
- Restart Project64 after connecting the controller.
- Confirm the right device and plugin are selected, and try the alternate plugin.
- Check whether the adapter is DirectInput/HID or XInput; do not enable XInput by default.
- Exit Steam and virtual-controller utilities, then test again. They can create duplicate devices or change which device Project64 sees.
Buttons work, but the main stick does not
Recheck the axes in joy.cpl, clear and rebind both stick axes, and try the alternate axis entry in N-Rage. If Windows shows an axis problem, calibrate the device in its game-controller properties. Close other controller software that may be capturing input.
The C-stick will not bind
Move it firmly in each direction while the binding field is active. Check whether Windows reports axes or a hat switch. If the default plugin cannot bind the reported control, try N-Rage or map C-button directions to GameCube face buttons instead.

- Switch to “Wii U” or “PC” mode by using the switch located on the side.
- The GameCube Controller Adapter allows you to connect up to four GameCube controllers (or wireless GameCube controllers) to a Wii U system, PC USB, Switch/Switch 2.
- Supports the built-in Vibration Feedback with no delays by plugging the two USB ports of the adapter into your Wii U system or PC USB connector ports.
- Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7,Windows 8, 10, 11 and Mac OS under the PC mode.
- The driver is required if you need the vibration feedback on the PC mode.
Triggers bind incorrectly
Adapters may expose L and R as digital buttons, separate axes, or a combined axis. Bind the digital press when available; otherwise press the trigger fully during binding and test whether partial travel causes accidental activation. Try an alternate trigger entry if necessary.
Input stops after closing configuration
A Project64 issue report describes input trouble after closing configuration with some N-Rage builds; it is not evidence of a universal bug. Reopen the plugin settings, verify the selected device and controller, apply or save again, and restart Project64 if needed: Project64 issue #2294.
Controls work in menus but not in a game
Check that Controller 1 is plugged in, the game uses the expected controller port, and the intended profile is active. If the problem persists, try another game and another input plugin; Project64’s support guidance also recommends checking the game setup.
Test the mapping and save a profile
- Apply or save the configuration using the button provided by your plugin.
- Launch a game and test the stick in all eight directions, the D-pad, A, B, Start, Z, L, R, and all four C directions.
- Test both a menu and active gameplay. A platformer such as Super Mario 64 makes it easy to judge stick centering and camera controls; a racing game can reveal overly sensitive steering.
- Try another game before settling on a layout. N64 titles use their controls differently, and a comfortable C-button arrangement in one may not suit another.
- If the plugin supports profiles, save a named profile for the device or game. Recheck device order if you connect multiple controllers.
Project64’s input interface defines four controller ports, numbered 0–3: input plugin specification. For multiplayer, connect every controller before launching, test each in Windows, assign each to a different port, and mark each intended port Plugged. Wireless devices can reconnect under a different name or order, so repeat the Windows check after pairing. Project64’s repository identifies Windows, rather than native macOS or Linux, as its supported platform: Project64 repository.
