How to Use a LaunchAgent to Start OBS on a Mac mini for YouTube Streaming

Use a per-user macOS LaunchAgent to open OBS when you sign in to your Mac mini, then configure and start the YouTube broadcast separately.

A macOS LaunchAgent can open OBS automatically when the Mac mini user account logs in. It does not start before login, and opening OBS does not itself put a YouTube stream live. This guide sets up the login-time launch and explains the separate YouTube connection and checks needed to stream.

What a LaunchAgent will—and won’t—do

A LaunchAgent is a per-user launchd job: it runs in the context of a logged-in user. Apple describes a user agent as specific to that user and active only while they are logged in (Apple’s launchd guide). That makes it suitable for opening OBS after you sign in to the account used for streaming, not for starting OBS at the Mac’s pre-login boot screen.

There are two separate events: launchd opens OBS, then OBS connects to YouTube and begins sending a broadcast when streaming is started. A LaunchAgent alone does not verify that your scene is ready, permissions are granted, a stream key is configured, or YouTube is live.

Check the Mac mini and OBS before configuring launchd

Confirm OBS is installed and find its actual path

OBS’s official Mac installation instructions use a downloaded macOS DMG and moving OBS into Applications; Homebrew is also listed as an alternative (OBS macOS installation). If you used the standard installation, the app is commonly at /Applications/OBS.app, but confirm the location on this Mac rather than assuming it. In Finder, open Applications and locate OBS. If it is elsewhere, use that exact path in the property list below.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check compatibility and workload separately

OBS’s system requirements page lists Intel or Apple silicon, OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, and macOS 11 or later (OBS system requirements). The page also warns that compatible hardware does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity affect what a machine can sustain. Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard and test your actual scene and network before relying on an unattended stream. A Mac mini model name alone is not a performance guarantee.

Apple’s current Mac mini specifications describe configurable Apple silicon models, memory, storage, video encoding and Ethernet options. They do not establish a minimum Mac mini configuration for OBS; choose hardware based on your workload and peripherals, not on the assumption that every model handles every scene equally.

Create a LaunchAgent to open OBS at login

The example below creates a user LaunchAgent property list. Apple’s launchd documentation is archival, so confirm the supported property-list format and commands for your installed macOS version. In particular, use the full path to your installed OBS app in ProgramArguments.

  1. Create the LaunchAgents folder if needed. In Terminal, run mkdir -p ~/Library/LaunchAgents.
  2. Create the plist file. Open a plain-text editor and save the following as ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.local.obs-launch.plist. Replace the app path if OBS is installed somewhere other than /Applications/OBS.app.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
        <key>Label</key>
        <string>com.local.obs-launch</string>
        <key>ProgramArguments</key>
        <array>
            <string>/usr/bin/open</string>
            <string>-a</string>
            <string>/Applications/OBS.app</string>
        </array>
        <key>RunAtLoad</key>
        <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
  3. Validate the plist. Run plutil -lint ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.local.obs-launch.plist. A valid file should report OK. Fix any syntax errors before proceeding.
  4. Load it for the current user. On current macOS versions, use the launchctl workflow supported by that release. A common per-user-domain command is launchctl bootstrap gui/$(id -u) ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.local.obs-launch.plist. If it reports that the job is already loaded, consult the current macOS launchctl documentation for the appropriate bootout/reload sequence rather than repeatedly bootstrapping it.
  5. Test the behavior. Log out and back into the intended macOS account. OBS should open. This confirms the app launch, not that YouTube has received a broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream

YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for screen or gameplay sharing, external audio/video equipment, and more advanced productions; an encoder can be software or hardware (YouTube: live streaming with an encoder). OBS is software in this workflow.

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream credentials using the available OBS workflow. YouTube’s URL and key are account-specific credential material: do not expose the key in screenshots, logs, shared plist files, or public examples.
  3. Configure and verify your scene, audio sources, encoder settings, resolution and frame rate. Check macOS camera and microphone permissions if those devices are part of the production.
  4. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the incoming preview/status in YouTube Studio and use YouTube’s go-live control if the stream setup requires it.

YouTube says first-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming ahead of a scheduled broadcast (YouTube live streaming requirements). YouTube also says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not infer that a longer stream will be archived in the same way from that statement.

Check Login Items if OBS does not open

On macOS 13 and later, System Settings includes Login Items controls that can show whether a LaunchAgent is allowed. Open System Settings → General → Login Items and inspect the relevant permission/status controls. Apple documents this behavior for apps targeting macOS 13 and later; menu behavior can differ on older releases (Apple Platform Deployment: Login Items).

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS does not open at login: Check that the file is in ~/Library/LaunchAgents, the plist passes plutil -lint, the Label matches the plist’s label, and the OBS path exists. Check Login Items permission on macOS 13 and later. Verify commands against your macOS release.
  • OBS opens but YouTube shows no incoming stream: Opening OBS is not a broadcast start. Confirm the stream URL/key in OBS, choose the intended stream in YouTube Studio, and explicitly start streaming in OBS.
  • YouTube rejects or does not receive the key: Recheck the active stream’s credentials in Studio and update OBS without sharing the key. A key is sensitive account-specific information.
  • The stream is unstable or overloaded: Re-run OBS Auto Configuration Wizard, reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, or test a different encoder setting. OBS minimum compatibility does not guarantee adequate performance for a particular production.
  • Camera or microphone is unavailable: Check the macOS privacy permissions for OBS and confirm the intended device is selected. LaunchAgent setup cannot grant those permissions or confirm that the devices work.
  • Live streaming is not enabled yet: Complete YouTube’s channel enablement steps before the planned broadcast; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than a live OBS production with gameplay, screen capture, or camera inputs, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and does not replace OBS for camera or screen capture. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
