You do not convert a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 into a touchscreen. PS Remote Play leaves the game running on your PlayStation. The console sends the video and audio to the mobile device, while taps and gestures on the displayed controls are sent back as controller input. Your phone or tablet is therefore acting as a remote display and input surface, not replacing the console’s controller electronics.

Sony’s PS5 instructions show controller buttons appearing on screen when a Remote Play session begins. The same instructions document a double tap on the virtual touch pad and on-screen sticks for touch-pad, L3 and R3 behavior. The UK PlayStation Remote Play page lists mobile touchscreen controls as an alternative to a DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense controller: PlayStation Remote Play. That wording establishes the input option, not a promise that every mobile device or every region supports it indefinitely.
What you need before starting
A PS5 or PS4
The documented setup connects a mobile device to either a PS5 or PS4. The game still runs on that console; Remote Play does not install the game on the phone or tablet.
A compatible touchscreen device
Use a supported smartphone or tablet with a touchscreen. Sony’s compatibility lists and app support can change by operating-system version, model and country, and the material available for this guide does not provide a complete current matrix. Check Sony’s Remote Play support information for your exact device and region before buying hardware or troubleshooting a connection.

The PlayStation account used by the console
Sign in to the app with the PlayStation account associated with the PS5 or PS4 you intend to reach. A different account can prevent the app from finding the expected console or loading the intended session.
A network path between the device and console
Remote Play requires communication between the mobile device and the PlayStation. If the session cannot connect, verify that both ends meet Sony’s current Remote Play requirements for your region and that the console is available for Remote Play. Do not infer a particular bandwidth, latency or router requirement from this guide; those figures are not established in the cited material.
Set up virtual controls through Remote Play
- Confirm support. Check the current Sony Remote Play support information for your phone or tablet’s model, operating-system version and country. Compatibility is not established for every device by the general instructions.
- Install PS Remote Play. Get the official app for the touchscreen device and complete its initial permissions and sign-in screens.
- Sign in with the console’s PlayStation account. Use the account associated with the PS5 or PS4 you want to control.
- Connect to the console. Select the PS5 or PS4 presented by the app and wait for the Remote Play session to begin. If the console is not listed, stop and check Sony’s current setup requirements rather than guessing at an unsupported device or menu.
- Start the game after the session loads. The streamed PlayStation image appears on the touchscreen with virtual controller controls layered over it.
- Tap the displayed controls. Use the virtual buttons and sticks instead of pressing a physical DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4. Controls can obscure part of the game image, so reposition your hands or use the app’s current display options if offered on your device.
- Use the documented touch gestures. Double-tap the on-screen touch pad for touch-pad behavior. Double-tap an on-screen stick when you need the corresponding L3 or R3 input, as described in Sony’s PS5 instructions.
- End the session from Remote Play. Exit the app’s remote session when finished, then close the app if you no longer need the streamed connection.
Sony’s Xperia setup guidance describes the on-screen controller as a secondary option: “Instead, it provides a simple and easy secondary input method.” The statement appears in Sony USA Support’s Xperia Remote Play setup article. It is a useful description of the role of touchscreen controls, not a claim that they duplicate the feel or accuracy of physical controls.

Input is rendered by the app
On a physical controller, a button, trigger or stick is a separate piece of hardware. In Remote Play, the app draws a representation of those inputs on the phone or tablet and interprets your taps. The method therefore depends on the app, the touchscreen and the streamed session.

Touch gestures have specific meanings
The documented double-tap behavior matters because pressing an on-screen stick is not necessarily the same as tapping its center once. For touch-pad, L3 and R3 actions, use the gesture Sony specifies rather than assuming that every part of the virtual control has the physical equivalent you expect.
Do not assume equal precision or convenience
The official material confirms that virtual controls are available, but it does not provide comparative testing for precision, comfort, response time or latency. Treat those characteristics as personal and setup-dependent. A touchscreen can be the right solution when eliminating physical buttons is the priority, while a physical controller may remain preferable for games that demand sustained analog control or many simultaneous inputs.

Customize PS5 controller assignments
PS5 accessibility features include configurable button assignments and related settings. Use the console’s current Accessibility settings to change the physical layout when the problem is reach, dexterity or a button arrangement that does not work for you. This route changes how inputs are mapped; it does not remove the need to press a physical control. It can also be considered alongside Remote Play if you want the game streamed to a mobile screen but still prefer a physical controller.
Use the assist-controller feature
Sony’s accessibility information also describes an assist-controller arrangement in which two controllers operate a PS5 as though they were one. That can let a second person provide inputs during assisted play. It is a console accessibility arrangement, not a virtual touchscreen control scheme, and it does not require claiming that one player can operate every action from a phone.
Consider the Access controller as a separate path
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2023 launch announcement says the Access controller includes 19 interchangeable button caps and three interchangeable stick caps. The announcement also reports support for profiles, input remapping, disabling buttons and 30 control profiles. What about PlayStation Portal?
The PlayStation Portal instruction manual identifies an 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen. That specification comes from the 2024 manual, available at PlayStation Portal’s instruction manual.
That touchscreen specification does not establish that Portal replaces all physical gameplay controls with a full virtual gamepad. The evidence cited here supports describing Portal as a device with an 8-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen, but not as the documented answer to using a PlayStation entirely through on-screen buttons. For the specific touchscreen-button method in this article, use the mobile Remote Play path and verify current support for the intended phone or tablet.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The app cannot find the PS5 or PS4
- Confirm that you signed in with the PlayStation account associated with the target console.
- Check the current Sony Remote Play requirements for your country and device model.
- Make sure the intended PS5 or PS4 is available for Remote Play and that the network connection meets Sony’s current requirements.
- If the device or operating-system version is not on Sony’s supported list, do not treat an unofficial workaround as equivalent to the documented setup.
The game appears, but virtual controls are missing
- Wait for the Remote Play session to finish loading before judging the control overlay.
- Confirm that you started a Remote Play session rather than opening a different PlayStation app or a local game stream.
- Close and reopen the current app session, then check for an app update.
- Recheck Sony’s instructions for the relevant console generation; on-screen behavior can depend on the app version.
A touch-pad or stick press does not work
- Use the documented double-tap gesture for the on-screen touch pad, L3 or R3 behavior.
- Tap the virtual control itself rather than the streamed game image outside the control overlay.
- Try the action after the session has fully connected; a partially loaded overlay may not register input normally.
The touchscreen feels unsuitable for a particular game
That is a use-case limitation, not proof that Remote Play is malfunctioning. The cited sources confirm availability of virtual controls but do not measure their precision, latency or comfort against a physical controller. If a game requires sustained analog movement or frequent simultaneous inputs, compare the touchscreen experience with a physical controller or an accessibility-focused physical arrangement.

Remote Play’s virtual controls and PS5’s accessibility settings solve different problems. Use PS5 button-assignment features or the Access controller when the goal is to reconfigure physical inputs. Use the mobile touchscreen method when the goal is to avoid pressing a physical controller during a Remote Play session.
How to choose a phone or tablet for this use
Start with compatibility, not screen size or advertised gaming performance. Sony’s broad documentation confirms the method but does not establish a complete model-by-model, operating-system-by-operating-system and region-by-region list here. Before purchasing a device, verify all of the following against Sony’s current information for your location:
- The exact phone or tablet model is supported.
- The installed operating-system version is supported.
- The PS Remote Play app is available in your country.
- Your PS5 or PS4 generation is included.
- The device’s touchscreen is usable for the virtual control overlay and any gestures you need.
A larger screen may make the overlay easier to see, but no source cited here establishes a preferred display size, resolution, latency or control accuracy. Treat those as personal evaluation criteria after compatibility is confirmed.

Choose mobile touchscreen Remote Play when
- You specifically need to avoid pressing physical controller buttons.
- You have a phone or tablet that Sony currently supports for Remote Play.

The precise answer to the title is therefore: install PS Remote Play on a compatible touchscreen phone or tablet, sign in with the console’s PlayStation account, connect to the PS5 or PS4, and use the virtual controls shown when the session begins.
