There is no universally cheapest way to run a YouTube stream 24/7. A home PC costs electricity and requires your computer, internet connection, and troubleshooting to remain available. A VPS moves the encoder offsite but still leaves setup and recovery to you. A managed looping service charges a recurring fee in exchange for provider-operated streaming and whatever recovery features its plan states.
To compare them fairly, calculate your home PC’s real monthly power cost, get a VPS quote for the configuration you need, and check a managed service’s current limits, taxes, and billing term. The examples below are published prices and scenarios, not a measured comparison of equivalent services.
What counts as the monthly cost?
Compare the full cost of keeping the stream going—not free encoder software against a server or service bill in isolation. Include recurring charges, any hardware bought specifically for streaming, and the work involved in operating and recovering the stream.
| Option | Main recurring cash cost | Who operates it? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home PC plus OBS | Electricity, any incremental network cost, and possibly hardware wear | You | May have low marginal cost if a suitable PC is already running, but depends on home power, internet, and the machine staying available. |
| Self-managed VPS plus FFmpeg | Server rental and any applicable transfer or storage charges | You | Moves compute offsite and gives you control; you still install, monitor, protect the stream key, and manage restarts and recovery. |
| Managed looping service | Subscription, plus any storage, channel, or tax charges under the selected plan | The provider operates its cloud encoder and stated recovery workflow | Reduces server administration and avoids leaving a home PC running, in exchange for recurring fees, provider limits, and dependency on the service. |
These options are not automatically equivalent. Check stream quality and bitrate limits, channel count, storage and upload limits, billing term, tax treatment, recovery behavior, and how much control or portability you need. A service’s description of its recovery workflow is not an independent uptime measurement.

Estimate a home PC’s electricity bill
Use the whole computer’s average power draw at the wall while it performs the intended streaming workload—not the power supply’s nameplate rating. A plug-in electricity usage meter can help measure it. Then apply your own marginal electricity rate:
Monthly kWh = average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days

Monthly electricity cost = monthly kWh × applicable marginal ₹/kWh
For a 24/7 stream, use 24 hours per day. Add network charges only if the stream changes a capped plan or otherwise creates an incremental cost. If you need to buy a computer solely for the stream, show that upfront purchase separately or state the period over which you amortize it; do not treat an already-owned, already-running PC and a new purchase as the same cost case.

Illustrative India scenario—not a universal tariff or measurement
A 2026 StreamNeo article uses an illustrative desktop draw of 120–200 W and an illustrative tariff of ₹7–₹8 per kWh. Under those assumptions, it calculates about ₹20–₹38 a day for the PC alone, or ₹605–₹1,152 over 30 days. These are the publisher’s assumptions and calculation, not an India-wide tariff or a measurement of your machine. Peripherals, UPS losses, or a higher tariff can raise the practical cost. Replace the example inputs with your wall-meter reading and electricity bill. StreamNeo’s India cost comparison

Home PC with OBS
You manage the encoder, computer, home internet, and stream key. If the PC, connection, or power fails, the stream can stop; you are responsible for noticing and restoring it. This can make sense if you already have suitable hardware running for other reasons and accept the operational responsibility.

VPS with FFmpeg
A VPS moves compute out of your home, but it is not a managed looping service by default. You remain responsible for installation and configuration, securely handling the YouTube stream key, monitoring the process, and arranging restarts and recovery. Compare quotes only after specifying the same expected quality and workload, plus storage and data-transfer needs.
Managed looping service
A managed service can operate the cloud encoder and may include a stated reconnect or recovery workflow. Check exactly what the selected plan supports and what happens when a stream drops; do not read marketing language as a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. You also trade some control for the provider’s limits and continued availability.
Check YouTube eligibility before spending
The platform prerequisite applies whether your encoder is at home or in the cloud. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; it also lists an encoder as a supported streaming method. Review the current YouTube Help guide to live streaming before setup.
Choose based on your actual situation
- You already own a suitable PC and it runs anyway: measure its additional wall draw and use your tariff. Home streaming may have a low marginal cash cost, but you still take responsibility for the machine, power, internet, and recovery.
- You need offsite compute and want to manage the setup yourself: compare a VPS quote that specifies location, resources, storage, egress, OS or license, and continuous use. The server rental does not remove your installation and monitoring work.
- You want prerecorded videos to loop on YouTube without keeping a home computer on: compare managed plans on equivalent quality, channels, storage, tax, billing term, and recovery terms. StreamNeo is one option; its current plan and terms should be checked before purchase.
- You need camera capture or a complex real-time production: a prerecorded-video looping service may not fit. Choose a workflow built for live capture and production instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, the steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. Check the service and terms at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
