Reset the key only if it is invalid or you believe it has been compromised; resetting is a separate action and requires channel-owner or manager access.
Reconnect OBS with the current YouTube stream key
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Copy the current stream key shown there. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder.
- Update the key in OBS. Replace the saved key for your YouTube connection with the one you just copied. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the general arrangement: select YouTube directly if the encoder offers that option, or enter YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the key in the Stream Key field. The reviewed YouTube instructions do not establish OBS’s exact menu path or current field labels, so use OBS’s current YouTube connection settings rather than relying on a possibly outdated click-by-click path.
- Start the encoder and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS, then return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s setup flow says to wait for the preview before selecting Go live. A successful OBS start alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
When to reset the key instead
First try updating OBS with the current key already shown in Live Control Room. Reset the key only if the current one is rejected or you believe it has been exposed. In Live Control Room, go to Stream, find Stream key, and select Reset beside the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key and replace the saved value in OBS, then start the encoder and check for the preview.
YouTube says a channel owner or manager must reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have permission. A stream key is a credential and destination identifier—YouTube Help describes it as like “your YouTube stream’s password and address”—so keep it private and retrieve or replace it through the authorized channel interface. What “rotates unexpectedly” does—and does not—tell you
YouTube’s reviewed guidance explains how to retrieve or reset a key and update an encoder, but does not establish that keys rotate automatically on a schedule or explain why a key might appear to change unexpectedly. A stale key in OBS is one practical possibility; the available guidance does not establish the cause in a particular case. Do not assume a scheduled expiry, OBS bug, account compromise, or policy change without other evidence. If you suspect someone else has access to the key, reset it and update any encoder that uses it.

If OBS connects through YouTube account login
Some encoder setups connect by signing in to YouTube rather than using a stream key. If that login route reports an error, YouTube’s troubleshooting page advises contacting the software provider. The key-replacement steps above apply to a key-based connection.
Check before an important stream
- Confirm that OBS has the current key for the intended YouTube channel and stream.
- Start the encoder early enough to see whether Live Control Room receives a preview before the scheduled start.
- Once live, monitor stream health and check audio and video quality. YouTube recommends testing the encoder ahead of the event and monitoring the stream; see its encoder setup guidance.
