To keep prerecorded video live around the clock, configure an encoder or cloud service to loop the videos, then send its feed to YouTube with the stream URL and reusable key. The source must keep running, and the channel must be eligible for live streaming.
What a persistent stream key does—and what it does not do
YouTube’s stream key tells YouTube which encoder feed to accept. A custom key can be reused, so you do not need to create a new one every time you reconnect. YouTube compares a stream key to a password and address: treat it as a credential and do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains stream keys and connecting an encoder.
The key is not a video host, playlist, scheduler, or loop control. The encoder or cloud service must supply the video continuously and be configured to repeat the source. Reusing a previous stream’s settings can copy its metadata, settings, and key, but it does not make the video source start or loop by itself. Auto-start and auto-stop determine whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or ends the YouTube stream.
Before you start: check channel access and choose a setup
Confirm YouTube live-streaming eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your intended launch. YouTube also states limits of up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for the current requirements.

Choose what will supply the video
- Software encoder: A computer runs the encoder and playlist. It must remain powered, connected, and able to recover from interruptions.
- Standalone hardware encoder: A dedicated device supplies the feed. Check that its software supports playlist looping; not every encoder is a playlist player.
- Cloud streaming service: A service supplies and loops uploaded videos remotely. Check its current looping, reconnect, monitoring, and recording features, plus its terms and recurring costs.
YouTube describes software and hardware encoders and lists cloud services among verified encoder options. Its verified-encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC; confirm any service’s current capabilities and terms directly. The choice is a trade-off: who keeps the source running, who handles looping and reconnects, how much control you need over encoding, how you will monitor faults, and how you will preserve a copy.
Set up the reusable key and connect the playlist
- Open YouTube Studio: Select Create, then Go live, and open the Stream tab. Under Select stream key, choose an existing key or create a custom key. A custom key is useful when you need a stable key and settings to reuse. Keep the key private.
- Copy the YouTube connection details: In the encoder, select YouTube as the destination if it is available. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and paste the key into its stream-key field. Do not confuse the stream URL with the key; the encoder needs the correct value in each field.
- Build and repeat the playlist in the encoder or service: Add the prerecorded files in the desired order and enable the product’s repeat or loop option. The exact controls differ by encoder; YouTube’s general setup instructions do not specify application-specific playlist controls. Confirm that the final item returns to the first item and that the source continues sending video after the initial play-through.
- Set encoding for the chosen protocol: For a standard RTMP workflow, use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends. Apply the video and audio settings described below, then save the encoder profile so reconnects use the same destination and configuration.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview: Start the feed and wait for it to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct video and audio, check stream health, and verify the watch page and privacy setting you intend to use. For a scheduled stream, check the preview before going live.
- Monitor the live feed: YouTube recommends testing the setup and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended, confirm that the playlist loops and decide how you will notice a stopped feed or a service interruption.
YouTube’s walkthrough covers supplying the stream URL and key, starting the encoder, checking the preview for scheduled streams, and ending the feed by stopping the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS encoder use, YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the upload connection available to the encoder. These are YouTube’s settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or network can sustain a nonstop stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protocol: RTMPS for a standard RTMP-compatible setup, as recommended by YouTube.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Bitrate mode: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: Select values the encoder and sustained upload connection can support; the cited guidance does not make a single setting suitable for every connection.
HLS is a separate ingestion option for compatible workflows, not another name for the basic RTMP key setup. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Its HLS setup requires transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Use those HLS-specific requirements only if the encoder and workflow use HLS; see YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

What changes when the stream runs for 24 hours
A continuous broadcast has different archive and rewind trade-offs from a short live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not assume a single 24/7 broadcast will leave a complete archive or allow viewers to rewind the whole playlist. Keep the original files and arrange a separate recording or backup if preserving the entire output matters. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Also distinguish a continuous feed from repeated scheduled broadcasts: a reusable key simplifies reconnection, but does not guarantee that the encoder, network, or cloud service will remain available. Set up a way to check stream health and respond when the feed stops.

Copyright, playlist rights, and YouTube rules
Before looping any video, make sure you have the rights or permission to stream its video, music, and other included material. A video being available online, owned by a game publisher, or previously uploaded to your channel does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and encoder instructions do not grant rights to the content you send. Check the licenses and permissions that apply to every playlist item and review YouTube’s current policies before going live.
A reusable key changes how the encoder connects; it does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s rules or resolve copyright claims. If a video is claimed, blocked, or otherwise restricted, remove or replace it and address the issue through the applicable YouTube process rather than relying on the key to keep the broadcast running.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the feed: Confirm that live streaming is activated for the channel, then verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and the current key in their separate fields. If the key was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the new one.
- The stream connects, but the playlist stops at the end: The key is working; the media source is not looping. Enable repeat in the encoder or cloud service and test through the end of the playlist before leaving it running.
- The stream starts but has no preview: Check that the encoder is sending the expected video and audio, that it has started with the intended destination, and that Live Control Room reports an incoming feed. Recheck the server URL, key, and encoder output.
- Video or audio quality is unstable: Compare the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the sustained upload connection and encoder capacity. Check stream health and lower settings if the connection cannot reliably carry them.
- Viewers cannot rewind or find a complete recording: For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable, and its automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Preserve the originals and use a separate recording plan if a complete copy is required.
- The feed stops while unattended: Identify whether the source device, network, encoder, or cloud service stopped supplying video. Configure and test the responsible system’s recovery behavior, and establish a way to detect interruptions; a persistent key alone does not reconnect a failed source.
