The key authenticates the encoder; it does not loop videos or keep the stream running. The encoder or streaming service handles those jobs.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
Confirm that live streaming is available on your channel and that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the broadcast. Current minimum-age rules also apply. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions; requirements and interface labels can change.
Choose what will run the prerecorded video
You need an encoder or streaming service that can send a continuous feed to YouTube. It must also handle playback: for a 24/7 broadcast, look for playlist looping, reconnection or restart behavior, and a way to monitor the stream. A stream key alone cannot keep a broadcast alive.
- Computer-based software: An encoder app can send the feed, but the computer, software, power and network connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
- Standalone hardware: YouTube supports hardware encoders as an option; no particular model is required by its setup guidance.
- Cloud service: A service can run prerecorded playback without relying on a computer at home. YouTube’s encoder listings include Gyre as a cloud-based prerecorded-stream option; the listing does not make it required or the only option. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Set up the stream key and start the broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream. Choose Create, then Go Live. In the Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create or select the stream. Schedule it first if you want a promoted watch page. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the process.
- Copy both connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Some encoders offer a direct YouTube connection or a preset instead of separate fields.
- Enter them in the encoder. Put the stream URL in the server, ingest URL or RTMP field, and put the stream key in the stream key field. Confirm the selected stream matches the one open in Live Control Room.
- Configure prerecorded playback. Choose the video or playlist and enable looping or continuous playback in the encoder or service. Set its reconnect or restart behavior if available; YouTube does not provide looping through the stream key.
- Check the preview before going live. Wait for the encoder feed to appear in Live Control Room and confirm picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to select Go live after the preview appears. Monitor stream health as it runs; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
Encoder settings that affect stream quality
For common RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate appropriate to resolution, frame rate and codec, while leaving headroom for a reliable upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the target format; do not assume one bitrate fits every video or connection.

- Resolution and frame rate: Set them to match the source and the upload capacity you can sustain.
- Keyframe interval: Use two seconds where the encoder exposes the setting; do not exceed four seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
- Audio: Select AAC or MP3 and listen to a representative test segment for clipping, silence or sync problems.
- Test content: Check a section with movement and sound, not just a static opening frame. Review the preview and stream-health indications before relying on unattended playback.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as similar to the stream’s password and address. Treat yours as a credential: do not share it in public documents, screenshots, chat or an exposed encoder configuration. If you think it has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube also supports custom keys for reuse, and reuse settings may copy a key. Plan for interruptions and archives
A 24/7 stream depends on the encoder or service staying connected and recovering when something interrupts it. Check whether it can reconnect after a network loss or restart after a failure, and how you will notice if the feed stops. Test the recovery behavior before leaving the broadcast unattended.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived in full. If a complete archive matters, arrange separate recording or plan segmented broadcasts, and verify current YouTube policy and your encoder’s scheduling behavior.
Troubleshooting common stream-key problems
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder has both the correct stream URL and key, that it is sending to the stream selected in Live Control Room, and that live streaming is activated for the channel.
- The key is rejected or the wrong stream appears: Recopy the key and URL from the selected stream and replace the encoder’s saved values. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The stream starts but stops later: Check the encoder’s connection, power and network, then inspect its reconnect or restart settings. A key does not provide automatic recovery; that depends on the encoder or service.
- Video or audio quality is poor: Confirm the selected codec and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance, check that the upload connection has headroom, and test representative movement and audio.
- The live video works but no full-day archive is available: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Use separate recording or segmented broadcasts if you need a complete archive.
