Each points to a different part of the signal path. Check the Media Source and scene first if OBS is already black; if OBS looks right, check the YouTube event connection and stream health.
Find where the video turns black
Play the prerecorded file while checking each stage. Make a short local recording in OBS so you can compare what OBS displays with what it actually records.

OBS showing that it is streaming does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving usable video. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains the process.
Check the prerecorded video source in OBS
Confirm the Media Source file and playback
For a local prerecorded file, use OBS’s Media Source. Open its properties and verify that Local File points to the intended video. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Check that the source is present and visible in the scene currently on air.

Review the playback options in the Media Source properties:
- Loop: Enable this if the file should start again when it finishes. Otherwise, the video may end and leave the screen blank depending on the end behavior.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: This restarts the file when the source becomes visible in the current scene.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Check this if the image disappears at the end of the file.
- Close file when inactive: Consider whether switching scenes or hiding the source affects playback, then test that behavior.

Check visibility, layering, and position
OBS scenes stack sources. A source above the video can cover it, even when the Media Source itself is working. Check the eye icon beside the source, temporarily move the Media Source above other sources as a diagnostic, and inspect its transform, size, and position. The video needs to sit within the canvas to appear in the output. See the OBS Project’s Sources guide for source visibility and ordering.

If the scene uses a VLC Video Source
VLC installation matters only when the scene actually uses OBS’s VLC Video Source, for example for a playlist. OBS requires VLC for that source; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. A standard Media Source does not have this VLC dependency. OBS documents this distinction in its Media Sources guide.

When OBS preview and local recording both show the footage correctly, shift attention to the YouTube connection rather than changing Media Source settings at random.
- In OBS, confirm that the stream is configured for the intended YouTube event.
- Check that the server URL and stream key match that event. A key for another event can send the stream somewhere other than the Live Control Room you are watching.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream-health messages for warnings before selecting Go live.
- Compare the incoming preview with viewer playback after going live. If the incoming preview is correct but playback is not, verify the page and quality selection and allow time for delivery or processing.

Check rendering and encoding only if the symptoms point there
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If preview or recording problems coincide with rendering or encoding lag, simplify the scene and reduce the load before treating a GPU-related change as a fix for every black screen.
- On Windows, OBS recommends running OBS as administrator as an initial check for GPU overload.
- Close applications only if you know they are using substantial GPU resources.
- Simplify resource-heavy scenes, reduce source sizes or filters, and lower output resolution or frame rate if performance remains overloaded.
Use OBS’s performance and streaming troubleshooting guide for those steps. They are most relevant when OBS shows performance symptoms, not simply because YouTube displays a black frame.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s requirements
If YouTube is receiving the stream, compare the OBS output configuration with YouTube’s current published requirements for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. Frame rates can be up to 60 fps; YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says they should not exceed 4 seconds. Use CBR bitrate encoding and select a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than assuming one figure fits every setup. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends testing with movement and audio and monitoring stream health.

Do not mistake a network problem for a black source
A black image alone does not prove that the connection dropped frames. If OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or its connection indicator turns yellow or red, investigate the network branch. OBS says these signs can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- Try a different streaming server if one is available.
- Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload bandwidth.
- Check whether network software, a VPN, or firewall interference is affecting the connection.
- Prefer wired networking over Wi-Fi for streaming, and check network hardware.
Use OBS’s network troubleshooting guide when the connection indicators support this diagnosis; changing network settings is not a general remedy for a hidden or ended Media Source.
Run a complete test before the next event
Use a private or unlisted test with the same prerecorded file and scene you plan to use. YouTube recommends a test that includes movement and audio similar to the real stream. Follow the full path so the failing stage is visible:

- Play the file and check the OBS canvas preview.
- Make and inspect a short local OBS recording.
- Connect to the intended YouTube event and check its Live Control Room preview and stream-health notices.
- Verify viewer playback after going live, including the quality selection.
