To stream prerecorded gameplay on YouTube, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into encoder software, select and play your recording there, then check YouTube’s preview and click Go live. YouTube creates the live event and accepts the encoder’s feed; the encoder—not YouTube Studio—plays the video file.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements. Make sure you can access YouTube Studio and the encoder you plan to use.
Create a YouTube live stream
- Open the live workflow. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Choose when to stream. Use the Stream tab for an immediate broadcast, or go to Manage → Schedule stream for a future event. Add the title, visibility and other event details. A scheduled stream can be shared in advance.
- Find the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and the stream key for this event. Keep the pair together: the encoder sends its feed to the URL and uses the key to identify the stream.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the Studio workflow. The key is sensitive: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings.
Configure the encoder to play your recording
In your encoder’s stream settings, choose YouTube if it is available as a service. Otherwise, enter the YouTube stream URL in the server or URL field and paste the matching stream key in the key field. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”

Separately, use the encoder’s media, playback or playlist controls to select the prerecorded gameplay file. The labels and options for playback, looping, playlists and scheduling differ by software; consult that encoder’s documentation for the exact controls. YouTube Studio does not select or automatically play your local recording.
Keep the key private
- Do not show the key in screenshots, tutorials or public chats.
- If it may have been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room, then replace the old key in your encoder. A channel owner or manager can reset a key.
- YouTube allows a custom stream key for reuse. Reuse is convenient, but ensure the encoder is pointed at the intended event and that the key has not been reset.
Start the feed, check the preview and go live
- Start the encoder early enough to test the connection. For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the intended gameplay video and its audio are present, and check the event title and visibility.
- Monitor the preview and audio/video quality. When everything is correct, click Go live in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Test the actual network path from the machine running the encoder; a network interruption can break the stream. Choose the ingest protocol your encoder supports
RTMP is the ordinary encoder workflow in YouTube’s general instructions. HLS is available for compatible encoders and particular needs, including HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It is not a universal quality upgrade: HLS sends segments rather than a continuous stream, so YouTube says it has higher latency and requires specific playlist and segment settings. Use HLS only when your encoder and use case call for it; see YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions.
End the stream and find the archive
End the broadcast in YouTube, then stop the encoder from sending the feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish automatic archiving for streams of 12 hours or longer; do not rely on an archive for a longer broadcast without checking the current YouTube instructions.

Troubleshoot connection and playback problems

| No feed in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is actually sending, the channel is eligible, and the correct event is selected. Check that the stream URL and key belong together. |

For encoder-specific playback issues, use that software’s own documentation. YouTube’s connection workflow does not establish one universal cause or fix for every encoder.
