1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn Minecraft: Java Edition, press F3+H to toggle advanced item tooltips. They add technical information that can help you identify items and inspect item data, but the meaning of the displayed count depends on your game version: Java Edition 1.20.5 changed it from a tag count to a component count.
How to turn on advanced tooltips
- Open Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Press F3+H to toggle advanced item tooltips.
- Hover over an item in your inventory to inspect its tooltip.
This shortcut is documented for Java Edition. The available evidence does not establish equivalent Bedrock Edition controls or a universal fix for keyboards that do not register the shortcut, so check your operating system and keyboard documentation if it does not work.

Six useful ways to use advanced tooltips
1. Identify an item by its technical name
Technical item information can help distinguish items when their display names are ambiguous or customized, and can be useful when communicating about an item with other players. Treat the tooltip as an inspection aid, not a complete inventory of every property stored on the item.
2. Keep an eye on worn gear
Durability information can help you decide when to repair or replace equipment. In the official Java Edition 24w09a snapshot notes, Mojang defines the minecraft:damage component as the amount of durability removed from an item. That definition explains the component’s role; it does not establish that every advanced tooltip shows it as a separate line or specify a universal numeric display. Read the 24w09a snapshot notes.

3. Interpret the component count by version
In Java Edition 1.20.5, advanced tooltips began showing the number of components on an item instead of the number of tags. The count signals how many components are present, but it is not a readable dump of those components or their values. See the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes.
4. Connect item data to modern commands
Java Edition 1.20.5 introduced item stack components to replace existing item-customization functionality specified with item NBT, and updated command and data-definition formats. If you are comparing an item’s tooltip with a command example or data pack, check the example’s Minecraft version: older NBT-based syntax may not match newer component-based formats. The tooltip alone does not provide a ready-to-use command.

5. Understand what durability-related components mean
The same 24w09a snapshot notes define minecraft:repair_cost as the extra experience cost required to modify an item in an anvil. This is distinct from damage: one definition concerns durability removed, the other the additional anvil cost. These definitions describe the components, not a guarantee that both appear as individual lines in every tooltip.
6. Account for tooltip changes in newer releases
Tooltip behavior and component terminology can change across versions. Java Edition 1.21.5 documented removal of the hide_tooltip component and changes involving tooltip_display. When troubleshooting a hidden or unexpected tooltip, use documentation for the exact version you play rather than assuming older behavior still applies. Read the Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes.

What advanced tooltips do—and do not—tell you
- They expose additional technical item information for inspection.
- The count shown in Java Edition 1.20.5 and later reflects components rather than tags, according to the 1.20.5 release notes.
- A count is not the full underlying item data, and tooltip output should not be treated as a complete specification of every item property.
- For component definitions, command syntax, or tooltip hiding behavior, consult release notes matching your game version.
