You can use an iPhone or iPad as a streaming camera in three main ways: connect an iPhone to a Mac with Apple Continuity Camera, feed either device into OBS using a third-party USB or NDI setup, or host a stream directly from the mobile device using a supported browser or app. Choose based on where you want to produce the stream: on a computer or on the phone or tablet itself.
Choose a setup that matches your stream
| Route | Where the stream is produced | Phone connection | Useful when | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Continuity Camera | A Mac app or browser studio | Wi-Fi or USB | You want to use an iPhone as a camera input on a Mac with minimal setup | Requires a compatible iPhone and Mac, and Apple Account and connection conditions; Apple’s Mac webcam instructions specify iPhone, not iPad |
| Camera for OBS Studio over USB | OBS on a Mac or Windows computer | USB | You want a direct wired camera feed in an OBS scene | Needs a third-party iOS app and OBS plugin; Windows also requires Apple device support |
| NDI to OBS | OBS on a computer | Local network | You need to position the iPhone or iPad away from the production computer | Uses third-party NDI components, and network conditions affect the feed |
| Mobile studio | The iPhone or iPad itself | The device’s internet connection | You want to host from the mobile device without a computer production system | Features depend on the platform’s mobile workflow |
The routes above describe setup and compatibility, not measured comparisons of image quality or latency.
Use an iPhone as a Mac webcam with Continuity Camera
Check compatibility and requirements
Apple lists iPhone XR or later with iOS 16 or later, and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later, for the Mac webcam feature. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and be near each other. For wireless use, the Mac must not be using AirPlay or Sidecar, and the devices must not be sharing their internet connections. For USB, connect the iPhone and approve the trust prompt. See Apple’s Continuity Camera setup and requirements.
Set it up
- Enable Continuity Camera: On the iPhone, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity. On some iOS versions, the menu is labeled AirPlay & Handoff. Make sure Continuity Camera is enabled.
- Position the iPhone: Use a stable stand or compatible mount, in landscape orientation, with the rear camera facing your shot and unobstructed. Keep the iPhone near the Mac.
- Select it in your Mac app: Open the streaming, meeting, or other camera-enabled app and choose the iPhone from that app’s camera menu. The menu location varies by app.
- Choose USB if useful: Connect a compatible cable and approve any trust or accessory prompts. A wired connection is also practical when you want the iPhone to charge during a long session.
- Check the actual shot: Preview framing, focus, and lighting in the app you will use to stream before going live.
If the iPhone does not appear
- Recheck the model, operating-system, Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and proximity requirements above, along with the Continuity Camera setting.
- Update both devices and the video app, then try USB and respond to any trust prompts.
- If the iPhone has just restarted, unlock it once before relocking it and trying again, as Apple advises.
Connect an iPhone or iPad to OBS
OBS does not get these phone-camera feeds through a built-in iPhone or iPad feature in the workflows covered here. Camera for OBS Studio documents two third-party approaches: a USB connection using its iOS app and OBS plugin, or an NDI feed over the local network using an NDI receiving source in OBS, such as the DistroAV plugin. Follow the projects’ current setup instructions for supported versions and requirements.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
USB: a direct wired camera feed
- Install the Camera for OBS Studio plugin in OBS before buying its iOS app; the project recommends installing the plugin first.
- Follow the project’s instructions to install and open its iOS app, then connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- On Windows, install Apple device support if required. Unlock the device, trust the computer when prompted, and check that the computer recognizes it.
- Add or select the camera source in OBS as described by the plugin’s setup guide, then confirm the feed and framing in your scene.
The project recommends USB for lower latency and reliability, but the available setup material does not provide a measured latency figure or controlled comparison.
NDI: send the camera over your local network
- Set up the iPhone or iPad NDI camera workflow using the project’s current instructions.
- Install and configure an NDI receiver in OBS, such as the DistroAV plugin; NDI is not a direct built-in OBS feature.
- Connect the mobile device and receiving computer to a suitable local network, then select the received feed in OBS.
- Check the feed under the network conditions you will use for the stream. Where possible, the project recommends Ethernet for the receiving computer and Wi-Fi 6 or 7 for higher bitrates or resolutions.
Network capacity and congestion affect a wireless NDI feed. Choose USB when the device can stay by the computer and you prefer a direct connection; choose NDI when you need the camera to move around the local network and that network can support it.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Host directly from an iPhone or iPad
A mobile studio uses the device itself to host the stream rather than sending its camera feed to a separate computer. StreamYard documents a mobile workflow using native Safari on iPhone or iPad. Its support page says native screen sharing and green screen or virtual background are unavailable in that workflow. The page’s operating-system support matrix is historical help-page information, so check the platform’s current live requirements before relying on a particular OS version.
This is different from using an iPhone as the camera in a computer-hosted studio. StreamYard documents an iPhone-to-Mac browser studio route, but says iPad is not supported for that particular webcam feature. Apple’s Continuity Camera Mac webcam instructions likewise specify iPhone, not iPad.

Do you need an HDMI capture device?
Not for the ordinary Continuity Camera or USB phone-camera setups described above. HDMI capture hardware is for a video source that outputs HDMI, such as a compatible dedicated camera. StreamYard’s dedicated-camera guide gives the Elgato Cam Link 4K as an example for HDMI sources. Do not buy a capture device by default for an iPhone or iPad camera connection.
Prepare the camera for a longer stream
- Use a stable stand or phone mount so the frame does not shift during the stream.
- For Continuity Camera, Apple recommends landscape orientation for automatic selection and an unobstructed rear camera.
- Use USB when a wired connection or charging during a long Mac session is more useful than wireless placement.
- Preview the camera in the actual streaming app before going live; the cited setup guides do not establish a universal quality or latency result for these workflows.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
