How to Use an iPhone or iPad as a Webcam for Streaming

Use an iPhone as a streaming webcam with Continuity Camera on a compatible Mac, or choose a third-party phone-camera workflow for OBS and other computers.

With a compatible Mac, you can use an iPhone as a streaming webcam through Apple’s built-in Continuity Camera. Turn the feature on, keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, mount the phone, then choose it as the camera in your streaming app. Apple’s documented native Mac webcam setup is for iPhone, not iPad; for OBS or a Windows or Linux computer, use a compatible third-party phone-camera workflow instead.

What you need

  • For Apple’s native Mac setup: an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later, and a compatible Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later. These are Apple’s stated eligibility requirements; some camera effects have additional requirements. Apple’s Continuity Camera guide and Apple’s requirements describe the current compatibility details.
  • For connection: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, the same Apple Account signed in on the iPhone and Mac, and the devices nearby. Apple’s setup guidance gives a maximum distance of 10 metres (30 feet). Apple’s Mac setup guide
  • For a stable picture: a secure phone mount or stand, with the rear camera unobstructed and aimed at you. A compatible USB cable is optional; it can connect the devices directly and keep the iPhone charged.

Set up an iPhone as a webcam on Mac

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm the iPhone and Mac meet the requirements above and are running supported software.
  2. Use the same Apple Account. Sign in to the same account on both devices, and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on. Keep the phone within range of the Mac.
  3. Enable Continuity Camera on the iPhone. Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and turn on Continuity Camera. Apple says it is on by default, but check this setting if the iPhone does not appear.
  4. Mount and position the phone. Put it in a stable mount with its rear camera facing you and nothing covering the lens. Landscape is a sensible starting orientation. If you want to charge while using it, connect it to the Mac or a USB charger.
  5. Choose the camera in your streaming app. Open the app on the Mac and select the iPhone in its camera or video settings. The control’s exact location depends on the app; the iPhone may also become active automatically. If you connect by USB and see a trust prompt, approve it.
  6. Check the shot before going live. Confirm framing and focus in the streaming app, check that the phone is not wobbling, and make sure the camera view is what you intend to share.

Choose wireless or USB

Apple supports Continuity Camera over Wi-Fi or USB. Wireless avoids a cable between the devices, while USB gives you a direct connection and can help keep the iPhone charged. If wireless connection is unreliable, Apple recommends trying USB. Neither method guarantees a particular resolution, frame rate, delay, or streaming performance; those depend on the devices, app, software, and setup.

Apple notes that when Continuity Camera is used wirelessly, an iPhone may disconnect from Wi-Fi to optimize the feature and use cellular data for background networking. Plugging the phone in or turning off cellular data can prevent that behavior. If you use USB, match the cable to the ports on your devices.

Can you use an iPad as a webcam for Mac?

Apple’s reviewed native Mac webcam instructions cover using an iPhone with a Mac; they do not establish an iPad-as-Mac-webcam setup. Apple separately lists supported iPhone and iPad models for using Continuity Camera as a webcam with Apple TV. That Apple TV feature should not be mistaken for native iPad-to-Mac webcam support. Check Apple’s Continuity features and requirements for the distinction.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Use an iPhone or iPad camera with OBS or another computer

If your host is Windows or Linux, or you specifically want a phone camera source in OBS, Apple’s native Mac workflow may not fit. OBS’s Smartphone Camera Guide, dated July 21, 2023, lists several third-party routes. Their platform support and setup differ, so check each provider’s current requirements and the compatibility of any required app or plugin before choosing one.

Option listed by OBS Platforms or OBS route stated in the guide
Continuity Camera Apple’s native option for iPhone and Mac; it is not an iPad-to-Mac webcam setup.
Camo Windows and macOS.
DroidCam Windows and Linux.
EpocCam Windows and macOS.
NDI HX Camera Used with the OBS NDI plugin.
VDO.Ninja Used through an OBS Browser Source.

In OBS, the phone-camera feed can appear as a Video Capture Source when the selected route and its software are set up correctly. For VDO.Ninja, the guide describes using a Browser Source instead. Follow the chosen provider’s current connection instructions, then add or select the corresponding source in the OBS scene you plan to use. The OBS guide names these options but does not establish current pricing or guarantee compatibility with every device, operating-system version, or app release.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Troubleshoot Continuity Camera not showing up

  • The iPhone is missing from the camera menu: verify Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the shared Apple Account, proximity, eligibility, and the Continuity Camera setting. Then open the streaming app’s camera menu and select the iPhone manually.
  • USB does not connect: approve any “Trust This Computer” or allow prompt, then disconnect and reconnect the cable. Check that the cable fits the ports on both devices.
  • The iPhone was restarted: unlock it once after the restart, then lock and mount it again. Apple also recommends updating iOS, macOS, and the video app when troubleshooting.
  • The camera pauses during a stream: a phone call can pause the camera session. End the call, lock and mount the iPhone, then reselect or restart the camera in the streaming app if needed.
  • The picture is blocked or unstable: uncover the rear camera and secure the mount. Landscape orientation is Apple’s recommended starting point for automatic selection.
  • Wireless remains unreliable: try a USB connection. The practical result depends on the particular devices, network, software versions, and setup.
