What Is a Knee-on-Knee Hit in Hockey, and When Is It a Penalty?

In the NHL, kneeing means leading with the knee, sometimes extending the leg outward to make contact. A collision alone is not automatically a penalty; Rule 50 gives referees discretion based on severity.

A “knee-on-knee hit” is an informal description; under NHL Rule 50, the infraction is called kneeing. It is not an automatic penalty whenever two players’ knees collide: the rule focuses on a player leading with the knee, sometimes extending the leg outward to make contact, and the referee chooses the penalty based on the play’s severity.

What does kneeing mean in hockey?

The National Hockey League’s Official Rules 2025–2026, Rule 50.1, defines it this way: “Kneeing is the act of a player leading with his knee and in some cases extending his leg outwards to make contact with his opponent.” The wording describes the player’s action, not simply the fact that the players’ knees touched.

That distinction matters when judging a collision. A knee-to-knee impact alone does not establish that a player led with the knee or extended the leg to make contact; nor does an injury, by itself, automatically determine the call. The referee assesses the play under the rules for that competition.

What penalties can the NHL assess for kneeing?

Under NHL Rule 50 for the 2025–2026 season, the referee may assess a minor or a major penalty at their discretion, based on severity. A player assessed a major for kneeing must also receive a game misconduct. The referee may assess a match penalty if, in their judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured an opponent by kneeing.

Ruling What NHL Rule 50 provides
Minor May be assessed at the referee’s discretion, based on severity.
Major May be assessed at the referee’s discretion, based on severity; a major for kneeing carries a game misconduct.
Match penalty May be assessed if the referee judges that the player attempted to or deliberately injured the opponent by kneeing.

Does the same rule apply in every hockey competition?

No single penalty description should be assumed to apply everywhere. The NHL rulebook governs NHL games; the IIHF publishes rules for its own events and championships. Consult the rulebook for the competition and season in question rather than combining NHL and international rules.

The IIHF’s detailed Rule 50 text available for 2025/26 is not enough to verify its specific penalty wording for 2026/27. The IIHF identifies its latest published edition on its rules page, where its 2026/27 book is available. Accordingly, NHL penalty options above should not be read as a statement of the current IIHF rule.

How can an in-game penalty differ from later discipline?

An in-game call and supplemental discipline are separate decisions. On March 14, 2026, the NHL reported that Anaheim defenseman Radko Gudas received a major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing Toronto forward Auston Matthews. The NHL later announced a five-game suspension. That is an example of additional discipline after the game, not an automatic suspension rule for every kneeing penalty.
