Select SDL, open Controller Port 1, and choose Automatic Mapping. If the controller is listed, select it and test the controls in a game. If automatic mapping is unavailable or wrong, bind the controls manually.
Set up the controller in PCSX2
- Connect the controller to your computer. Use a connection supported by your particular controller and computer. Xbox Support has guidance for connecting an Xbox Wireless Controller to Windows, but connection requirements can vary by model: Connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to a Windows device.
- Open Settings > Controllers. PCSX2’s controller configuration and mapping options are there. The usual Player 1 setup uses Controller Port 1; PCSX2 notes that games almost always expect the first player on that port.
- Choose SDL as the input source. PCSX2 describes SDL as its preferred input source because it is cross-platform and should work with most controllers and operating systems.
- Map the controller. Open Controller Port 1, choose Automatic Mapping, and select your controller if it appears. PCSX2 says automatic mapping fills supported controls, including vibration motors.
- Test the result. Try the controls in a game. If you want a dedicated test, PCSX2’s guide suggests the PS2 Pad Test homebrew application. The Qt and Big Picture interfaces do not currently include an input tester.
Choose an input source if SDL does not work
Try input sources in this order rather than switching at random. Availability and suitability depend on the operating system and whether the controller complies with the relevant input standard.

To try another source, return to Settings > Controllers and change the input source. PCSX2 advises avoiding XInput when SDL works. Automatic mapping is available with SDL and XInput, but not DInput, so use manual mapping if DInput is the only source that works.
Map controls manually
Manual mapping is useful when automatic mapping is unavailable or assigns the wrong buttons, sticks, or triggers.

- In Settings > Controllers, select the control you want to bind on the on-screen layout.
- Press or move the Xbox controller input that should activate that control.
- Repeat for the remaining buttons and stick directions, then test the layout in a game.
PCSX2 documents a narrower Windows-specific case for some third-party controllers whose inputs appear scrambled: enabling SDL Raw Input may help, but those controls must then be mapped manually. Automatic mapping will not use the raw inputs correctly. This is not a routine setting to change for every Xbox controller.
Troubleshoot detection and input problems
The controller does not appear in PCSX2
- Check that the controller is connected and available to your operating system.
- Reopen PCSX2 after connecting it, then check the device list again.
- Use SDL first. On Windows, try XInput if SDL fails and the controller is XInput-compliant.
PCSX2 documents these input-source options, but there is no single connection procedure that applies to every Xbox controller and computer. For model-specific Windows connection help, consult Xbox Support.

Buttons or sticks activate the wrong controls
Clear or replace the incorrect bindings with manual mapping. If the device is an affected third-party controller on Windows, consider SDL Raw Input as described above; it requires manual mapping.
Controller inputs trigger menus or keyboard actions
PCSX2 documents a conflict in which Steam Input can hijack controller input and send keyboard actions. Its listed workarounds are:

- Exit Steam.
- Disable Steam controller support.
- Change the Steam Desktop Layout keyboard mappings.
- Change PCSX2 hotkeys so they do not use the same keys.
PCSX2 crashes when the controller is plugged in
PCSX2 identifies a specific buggy Windows driver commonly associated with EZFRD64.dll. Its guide describes removing the related files or uninstalling the related driver as remedies. Treat this as a targeted fix only when the crash matches that driver issue: removing driver files can affect other software or devices, so identify the driver first and avoid deleting unrelated files.
Use a different mapping for a particular game
PCSX2 supports input profiles when a game needs a different layout. Create a profile, then assign it to that game through the game’s Properties. Profiles are game-specific; they are not a live mapping switch.
