AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not create or loop a playlist, and it is not a direct YouTube publisher. To run prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube while also using MediaPackage, you need a playlist-capable playout and encoder layer that sends one output to YouTube and, if required, another to MediaPackage. MediaPackage receives an upstream live stream and packages it for playback through an endpoint.
Understand the signal path before creating AWS resources
Think of this as two separate delivery paths from a continuously playing source—not as YouTube receiving a MediaPackage endpoint.
- Playout and encoding: A playlist-capable system plays your authorized prerecorded videos continuously and encodes the output.
- MediaPackage path: The encoder pushes an input to a MediaPackage channel. MediaPackage packages that input according to an endpoint’s settings, and a player or CDN requests the endpoint.
- YouTube path: The encoder sends a separate output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for your broadcast.
AWS’s MediaPackage documentation describes it as an origin and just-in-time packager: the channel represents an encoder input, while an endpoint makes packaged content available to playback clients or CDNs. It does not establish MediaPackage as playlist playout or a direct YouTube destination. Do not treat a MediaPackage endpoint URL as YouTube’s ingest URL.
If you need both destinations, confirm that your chosen encoder supports the required simultaneous outputs and can keep the playlist running through transitions and failures. That capability belongs to the encoder or playout service; it is not guaranteed by MediaPackage.

Check YouTube eligibility and plan the broadcast
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before building or scheduling a launch.
Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If preserving an archive matters, plan sessions within that documented limit and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch. A 24/7 channel may therefore need planned session boundaries rather than assuming a single broadcast will remain archivable indefinitely.

Use only content you are authorized to stream
A continuous playlist still has to comply with YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video, audio track, and other included material; a playlist’s availability elsewhere does not establish permission to broadcast it. Also consider whether the channel’s presentation adds meaningful value rather than simply repeating material: permission to use content and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
Build the 24/7 workflow
- Choose the playout and encoder layer. Select a system that can play your authorized playlist continuously and encode a live output. Confirm its supported codecs and ingest protocols against the requirements of both destinations. Do not assume a particular encoder supports MediaPackage and YouTube simultaneously. YouTube identifies Gyre as one hosted tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams; evaluate it separately if you do not require a self-managed encoder. Its mention does not establish compatibility with MediaPackage.
- Create a MediaPackage channel and endpoint. In AWS Elemental MediaPackage, create a channel for the incoming encoder stream, then create an endpoint with the packaging format and any required access or encryption settings. AWS’s getting-started guidance describes the channel as the encoder input and the endpoint as the packaged output for players or CDNs. Available formats and codecs depend on the endpoint type, so choose based on the consuming player or CDN.
- Configure the encoder’s MediaPackage output. Use the input URL and credentials generated for the channel, following the setup guide for the MediaPackage generation you are using. AWS documents standard MediaPackage live input as HLS pushed over HTTPS using WebDAV and digest authentication. If using input redundancy, configure the redundant streams with matching encoder settings.
- Create or select the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key through YouTube’s encoder workflow. Treat the key as a credential: keep it out of public configuration, recordings, and screenshots, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure a separate YouTube output in the encoder. Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Confirm the encoder’s documentation for its destination and multi-output behavior; neither a MediaPackage channel nor endpoint supplies this configuration.
- Apply YouTube’s HLS profile if you use HLS ingest. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These are YouTube-side ingest requirements. Do not assume the MediaPackage input settings automatically satisfy them; configure the encoder’s YouTube output separately.
- Test both routes before going live. Check the MediaPackage endpoint with its intended player or CDN, and use YouTube’s preview to verify the YouTube feed. Test a playlist transition and, where relevant, failover. Check audio and video quality and monitor stream health during the test and after launch.
Settings and design choices that need verification
MediaPackage input and endpoint are different configuration points
The input URL and credentials belong to the encoder-to-channel connection. The endpoint’s packaging format and access or encryption settings belong to the MediaPackage delivery side. Configure each for its own consumer. The exact endpoint type and available formats depend on the MediaPackage generation and configuration, so use the corresponding AWS guide rather than carrying settings over from a different generation.

YouTube ingest settings are not inherited from MediaPackage
If the encoder sends HLS to YouTube, set the YouTube-specific segment and request behavior in that output. The documented YouTube requirements are TS segments, 1–4 seconds long, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and at most five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. For another YouTube ingest protocol, use the current YouTube encoder guidance for that protocol instead of applying the HLS profile.
Do not assume failover or multi-destination behavior
MediaPackage documentation describes channel input redundancy, but the encoder must be configured appropriately for redundant inputs. Likewise, whether one playout system can send a MediaPackage feed and a YouTube feed at once depends on that system. Verify what happens if an encoder process stops, a destination disconnects, or a playlist item fails to load; the architecture alone does not establish automatic recovery for every component.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot
Use the preview and stream-health information in YouTube, check playback through the MediaPackage endpoint’s intended consumer, and monitor audio and video during operation. AWS and YouTube’s guidance emphasizes testing the route, checking preview, testing failover where relevant, and monitoring the stream.
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | The encoder’s YouTube destination, stream URL, key, or chosen ingest protocol. | Confirm the YouTube destination is configured separately from MediaPackage, recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio, and verify the encoder is sending the selected protocol. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The MediaPackage endpoint has no playable content | The encoder-to-channel input URL or credentials, input protocol, or endpoint configuration. | Check that the encoder is sending to the channel’s generated input URL with the provided credentials, and verify the endpoint’s format and access settings against the intended player or CDN. |
| YouTube rejects an HLS feed | The YouTube output may not follow YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements. | Check that it uses TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no more than five outstanding segments in its rolling playlist. |
| One destination works but the other does not | Each destination has its own ingest configuration and may impose different requirements. | Inspect the failing output independently. Confirm the encoder supports simultaneous outputs and that the settings for each destination match its own ingest guidance. |
| Playback breaks at a playlist transition | Playout behavior or the encoder’s handling of the next item. | Test the transition before launch, check whether the source continues producing a valid stream across item boundaries, and monitor the relevant destination’s preview or playback. |
| The broadcast stops or fails to recover | The failed component could be playout, encoding, network connectivity, or a destination connection. | Identify which leg stopped, check the encoder and destination status, and test the actual recovery or failover procedure rather than assuming it is automatic. |
Compare the operating burden and cost before committing
A self-managed AWS design gives you control over the playout and delivery components, but MediaPackage does not remove the need to operate a continuous source, an encoder, and destination-specific connections. Assess the full setup—not just the MediaPackage endpoint—against your needs for looping and scheduling, supported protocols and codecs, multi-destination output, failover, monitoring, latency, archive behavior, and DVR.
