How to Use AWS for a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Livestream

AWS can be part of a 24/7 YouTube livestream, but its documented live-streaming solution is not a ready-made prerecorded-video loop. Here is how to validate the workflow, configure YouTube ingest and plan for costs, recovery and archives.

You can use AWS as part of a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube livestream, but AWS’s documented Live Streaming solution is a live-video pipeline—not a verified, ready-made workflow for looping stored videos into YouTube Live. Before relying on it, confirm that your chosen AWS setup can continuously sequence your files, send a compatible feed to YouTube, and recover from interruptions. YouTube’s stream key and encoder settings complete the YouTube side; they do not configure AWS to create the loop.

What AWS can—and cannot—do for this setup

AWS documents a live-video architecture built around MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect in supported regions; its reference solution also includes CloudFront for distribution. In this design, MediaLive produces live outputs, MediaPackage ingests and packages live HLS, and CloudFront distributes the resulting stream. AWS describes redundant MediaPackage inputs as two identical live HLS feeds sent to separate ingest domains. These are documented live-processing and distribution components, not proof that the reference solution reads a folder of prerecorded files, loops them indefinitely and pushes the result to YouTube Live.

AWS’s general MediaPackage processing flow is described in its MediaPackage live processing flow, and the solution’s regional and deployment considerations are in Plan your deployment. Neither source establishes a complete, supported recipe for sequencing stored videos into a continuous YouTube encoder feed, or specifies restart, failover or playback-state recovery for that use case.

So treat AWS as a candidate platform to validate, not a turnkey YouTube looping feature. Do not assume that deploying the reference solution alone will publish a YouTube livestream or handle a prerecorded playlist.

How to plan and validate an AWS-to-YouTube workflow

The work is in verifying the connection between prerecorded assets, a continuously produced encoder feed and YouTube’s ingest—not merely creating AWS resources. The following sequence avoids assuming undocumented AWS behavior.

  1. Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements say the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. Confirm the channel can go live before building the AWS side.
  2. Choose the AWS design and region. Review the AWS solution deployment guidance for its supported regions and components. Decide which service or application will read and sequence the stored videos and produce the live encoder output. Verify this exact capability with current AWS documentation or a deployment test; the cited reference solution does not establish it.
  3. Confirm the YouTube handoff. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to enter both values in the encoder. Confirm your AWS-side encoder can send to the YouTube destination using the intended protocol and settings before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public code, logs, screenshots and shared documents. Limit access to the people and services that need it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the sending system.
  5. Test the sequence and continuity. Test the selected assets in order, the transition from the last file back to the first, audio and video continuity, and whether the feed stays live between files. The exact AWS configuration to accomplish these behaviors is not established by the cited AWS material.
  6. Test failure and recovery before going 24/7. Deliberately test a sender restart and an interruption in the relevant service or network path. Check whether the feed resumes, whether playback starts at the intended point, and whether YouTube continues receiving it. Do not count on automatic recovery unless your specific deployment has demonstrated it.
  7. Monitor the YouTube feed during a trial run. Use YouTube’s stream-health information and watch for a stopped feed, dropped frames, audio problems or an incorrect picture. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health in its encoder settings guidance.

Set the YouTube encoder output correctly

Use YouTube’s current settings guidance for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. The table gives the H.264 bitrate examples stated in YouTube’s guidance; these are recommended settings for the named resolution and frame rate, not universal rates for every codec or source.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps

For other resolution, frame-rate or codec combinations, use the corresponding current values in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide rather than extrapolating from these examples. Match the output to the material you intend to show, and verify the resulting feed in YouTube’s stream-health display.

Plan for continuity separately from the YouTube archive

A continuous broadcast and a complete recording are different outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable full-length archive. If you need a complete copy, plan an independent recording of the source or output and check that it is actually being saved; this is operational guidance, not a requirement to use a particular storage product. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Budget for processing and viewer delivery

AWS costs depend on the services, region, bitrate, viewer count and distribution volume. Its Live Streaming on AWS example for approximately 1,000 viewers watching a one-hour SD-540p event totals $69.74: $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution in US East (N. Virginia). AWS presents this as an estimate for that reference scenario, not a quote for a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream. See the solution deployment guide and MediaPackage pricing for the assumptions and pricing context.

Do not multiply that one-hour example into a 24/7 budget without rebuilding the estimate around your actual design and audience. MediaPackage pricing examples use their own input, output and delivery assumptions. Estimate each service and the distribution path you will actually use, for the region and settings you plan to run.

Copyright and channel eligibility for prerecorded content

Only broadcast videos and audio you own or are authorized to use, including any music, game footage or other material in the files. A file being prerecorded, or streamed through AWS, does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions; do not assume that a continuously repeated playlist will qualify for monetization. Review the rules that apply to your content and channel before launching.

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility checks still apply to an encoder-based broadcast: the channel must meet the current verification and restriction requirements, and the streamer must meet YouTube’s stated age requirement. Review YouTube’s getting-started guidance before scheduling the stream.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the sender is using the matching YouTube server URL and stream key, that it is sending to the intended stream, and that the chosen protocol and output settings are supported. If the key may have been exposed or replaced, update it in the sender.
  • The feed starts but stops at a file boundary: The asset sequencing or transition behavior may not be configured for continuous playback. Test the full playlist cycle and verify that the output remains continuous; the cited AWS reference architecture does not specify a prerecorded-loop configuration.
  • The stream fails to resume after an interruption: Check the sender and service state, then test recovery deliberately. Verify whether the feed reconnects to YouTube and whether the intended file or playlist position is restored. Recovery behavior must be established for your particular deployment.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the output codec, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s current guidance. Also verify that the sender can sustain the chosen output and monitor a test stream before relying on it.
  • The broadcast is live but the archive is incomplete or missing: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use an independent recording if a complete archive matters.
  • The AWS estimate is much higher than expected: Recheck viewer delivery volume, bitrate, region and the services included. AWS’s cited one-hour example is distribution-heavy and is not a fixed price for this use case.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously looping prerecorded YouTube channel rather than building and validating an AWS pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud service made for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
