Chunky is a server-side pre-generation mod or plugin that creates Minecraft Java terrain before players reach it. Install the build for your server platform, select a world and a bounded shape, set a center and block radius, then run chunky start. Watch the task with chunky progress; pause, resume, or cancel it as your server schedule requires.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This workflow works on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Paper. The examples below use Chunky’s documented commands and explain how to use a manual selection, an existing vanilla world border, or a second dimension without accidentally generating an unmanageably large area.

Minecraft normally generates terrain when a player moves into an unexplored area. That just-in-time work can compete with player activity, produce temporary lag, and make a newly opened region feel inconsistent while terrain, structures, and other world data are created. Chunky moves that work into a deliberate server task: it visits the selected area and generates the chunks before players explore it.
Chunky is not a map editor and it does not change the terrain design you chose. It is a pre-generation tool for common Java server platforms. You choose the world, geometric selection, center, and radius; Chunky then processes the matching area. Because generation writes world data to disk and uses server resources, the useful target is a clearly bounded playable area, not “as much as possible.”

Check compatibility and permissions first
Install the Chunky build that matches the platform actually running your server. The supported platform categories in the project documentation are Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Paper. A Fabric build is not interchangeable with a Forge, NeoForge, or Paper build, so identify the server software before downloading or copying files.
| Server setup | What to install | Command access |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Chunky build for Fabric | Run commands from the server console or with the required in-game permission |
| Forge | Chunky build for Forge | Run commands from the server console or with the required in-game permission |
| NeoForge | Chunky build for NeoForge | Run commands from the server console or with the required in-game permission |
| Paper | Chunky plugin for Paper | Run commands from the server console or with the required in-game permission |
After installing the matching build, start the server and enter chunky. A help menu should appear. If it does not, stop and check that the file is in the correct mod or plugin location, that the build matches the server platform, and that your account or console has permission to execute the command.

The safe basic workflow
Use this sequence when you want to define an area manually. Each command changes the current Chunky selection or starts the task, so enter them in order and verify the values before starting.
- Select the world. If the current world is not the one you intend to prepare, run
chunky world <world>, replacing<world>with the world name shown by your server. For example:chunky world world. - Choose a shape. Run
chunky shape squarefor a square selection orchunky shape circlefor a circular selection. - Set the center. Use exact horizontal coordinates with
chunky center <x> <z>, such aschunky center 0 0. If the intended center is the world’s default spawn, usechunky spawninstead. - Set the radius in blocks. Run
chunky radius 5000, or choose a smaller value that matches your planned playable area. - Start generation. Run
chunky start. Chunky begins processing the selected world and shape using the center and radius you set.
A minimal documented example is:
chunky radius 5000
chunky start
That two-line form assumes the world, shape, and center are already correct. For a fully explicit one-line start, the documented syntax is:
chunky start world square 0 0 1000
This starts a square selection in world, centered at coordinates 0, 0, with a 1,000-block radius. Use the explicit form when you want to reduce the chance of starting a task with settings left over from an earlier selection.

Understanding shapes, centers, and radius values
Radius means blocks, not chunks
Chunky’s radius value is measured in blocks. A command such as chunky radius 5000 describes the distance used to bound the selection; it is not a request for 5,000 chunks. The selected shape determines how that distance is applied around the center.
Square selection
A square is useful when your planned building area, transport grid, or administrative boundary is naturally rectangular. With a center of 0, 0 and a radius of 1,000, the selection is bounded around that center using the square shape. The direct command example above is therefore predictable and easy to communicate to staff.
Circle selection
A circle follows a round boundary around the chosen center. It can avoid generating the corners of a square when the playable area is intended to radiate from a central point. The same radius number represents blocks; only the boundary shape changes.
Center versus spawn
chunky center gives you coordinate-level control, which is useful for a hub, a planned settlement, or a region whose midpoint is known. chunky spawn uses the default spawn point and is convenient when the world is designed outward from spawn. Confirm that the spawn point is in the world you selected before relying on it.

Using Minecraft’s world border as the selection
If the playable area is already defined by Minecraft’s vanilla world border, you do not need to calculate a second center and radius. Select the world whose border you want to use, make sure the border is configured first, and then import it into Chunky.
- Set or verify the vanilla border in the selected world.
- Run
chunky worldborder. Chunky imports the center and radius from the active border of the currently selected world. - Run
chunky startto begin pre-generation of that imported selection.
chunky worldborder
chunky start
The border command reads the border associated with the world currently selected in Chunky. If you administer several dimensions, select the correct one first rather than assuming the border from another world will be used. This approach is especially useful on hosted servers where the border is already the authoritative definition of the playable map.

Pre-generating the Nether or another dimension
Every dimension is a separate generation target. Select it explicitly, then repeat the shape, center, radius, and start steps. A documented example for a Nether-like dimension is:
chunky world the_nether
chunky shape circle
chunky spawn
chunky radius 1000
chunky start
Dimension identifiers can differ with the server setup and Minecraft version. Use the exact name your server recognizes; if a command reports an unknown world, inspect the server’s world list or console output rather than guessing a spelling. The same principle applies to custom dimensions: select the identifier shown by that installation, then define a bounded selection.
Monitor a running task
Do not leave a large job unattended without checking its progress. Run:
chunky progress
The progress display reports the active task’s processed count, percentage, estimated time remaining, generation rate, and current location. These values let you see whether the task is advancing and whether the estimated completion fits your maintenance window. A changing current location and processed count indicate that work is continuing; a stalled display calls for investigation before you launch another task.
| Command | Effect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
chunky progress |
Shows processed count, percentage, ETA, generation rate, and current location | Check health and schedule while a task runs |
chunky pause |
Saves the current task state and pauses generation | Make room for players, backups, restarts, or other maintenance |
chunky continue |
Resumes a saved, paused task | Continue during the next maintenance window |
chunky cancel |
Stops the current task | Abandon a selection or stop a job that is harming server availability |
chunky trim |
Removes chunks outside the current selection | Only for deliberate cleanup after verifying the selection |
Pause before planned player activity instead of killing the server process. Resume with chunky continue when resources are available again. Cancel is a stop operation, not a pause; use it when you intentionally want to end the task. The saved progress behavior described for pause and continue is the reason to prefer those commands for temporary interruptions.
Treat chunky trim as destructive
chunky trim removes chunks outside the current selection. It is a maintenance command, not a faster form of pre-generation. A mistaken world, center, shape, or radius can make the current selection smaller or different from the area you meant to keep, so verify every setting before running it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan CPU, storage, and player time
Pre-generation trades unpredictable exploration work for a planned batch job. The larger the selection, the more terrain must be processed and stored. A radius increase expands the area rapidly, especially for square selections, so doubling a radius is not a small adjustment. Choose a boundary that corresponds to where players are expected to build or travel during the relevant season of the server.
Use a bounded first pass
Start with the smallest area that meets the launch or event requirement. Run chunky progress early in the job to observe the reported generation rate and ETA. That real reading from your server is more useful for scheduling than a generic promise of completion time, because hardware, world content, and concurrent activity vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSchedule around players
Generation consumes CPU and performs disk work while the server is running. Schedule a large task during a maintenance window or another period of low activity. If players report lag, pause with chunky pause, let normal activity recover, and resume later with chunky continue.
Account for disk space
Generated chunks become world data on disk. Check available storage before selecting a wide radius and leave headroom for normal logs, backups, and future growth. A full disk can affect more than Chunky, so storage planning is part of the server’s reliability plan rather than an optional optimization.
Consider map-output overhead
The project guide notes that map plugins may be worth disabling temporarily during generation to improve speed and map output. If your server uses a mapping plugin, decide whether its live rendering is needed during the batch. Re-enable it afterward according to that plugin’s own operating procedure.

Manual selection or world border: which should you use?
| Decision point | Manual center and radius | World-border selection |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | You are defining a new area or need a specific shape and midpoint | The vanilla border already defines the playable area |
| Setup | chunky world, chunky shape, chunky center or chunky spawn, then chunky radius |
Configure the border, run chunky worldborder, then start |
| Shape control | Choose square or circle directly | Uses the center and radius imported from the active border |
| Main risk | Starting with a stale or mistyped setting | Importing the border from the wrong selected world |
Neither method is inherently faster. The practical choice is whether your server’s existing boundary is the source of truth. Use manual settings when you are planning the boundary in Chunky; use worldborder when the border has already been approved and configured in Minecraft.
Common problems and fixes
The chunky command is unknown
Check the platform-specific installation first. Confirm that the file is in the correct mods or plugins location and that the build matches Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Paper. Restart the server after correcting it, then run chunky again. If the help menu still does not appear, verify operator or console permissions.
The task runs in the wrong world
Stop before starting generation and explicitly run chunky world <world>. For a dimension, use its exact server-recognized identifier. Then set the shape, center or spawn, and radius again. This avoids relying on values retained from a previous task.
The area is much larger than expected
Remember that radius is in blocks and that the shape controls the boundary. Review the numeric radius, center, and shape before starting. A square generally includes more corner area than a circle with the same radius, so choose the shape that matches the intended footprint.
Players experience lag during generation
Run chunky progress to confirm that the task is active, then pause it with chunky pause if player activity is being affected. Resume during a quieter window. Reduce the next selection’s radius, split work into scheduled areas, and consider temporarily disabling map plugins if their rendering is unnecessary.
Progress appears not to move
Check the processed count, percentage, rate, and current location again after a short interval. If none changes, inspect the server console for errors and confirm that the server still has available CPU and disk space. Do not start a second generation task simply because the display looks slow; overlapping work can make resource pressure worse.
You need to stop permanently
Use chunky cancel when the selection is no longer wanted. If the goal is only to free resources temporarily, use pause instead so the saved task can be resumed.
A repeatable launch checklist
- Identify whether the server runs Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Paper.
- Install the matching Chunky build and restart the server.
- Run
chunkyand confirm that the help menu appears. - Confirm operator or console permission.
- Choose the target world or dimension explicitly.
- Decide whether manual settings or the active world border define the area.
- Select square or circle, then set the center or spawn and a block radius.
- Check available CPU time and disk space and choose a maintenance window.
- Start with
chunky start. - Monitor with
chunky progress; pause or cancel if player availability requires it. - Resume paused work with
chunky continueand verify completion before changing the selection. - Use
chunky trimonly after a backup and a deliberate review of the current selection.
What to remember
The reliable Chunky pattern is select, define, start, observe, and control. Select the correct world, define a shape and a radius measured in blocks, start the task, and use the progress display to make scheduling decisions. A vanilla world border can supply the selection automatically, while other dimensions require an explicit world selection. Keep the boundary purposeful, because generation time, CPU use, disk growth, and player disruption all increase with the amount of terrain you ask the server to prepare.
