Use an Army Commander to move and coordinate a force, not as another frontline attacker: gather nearby troops into its stack, move them together, then unpack them onto adjacent tiles to fight, siege, or defend. Keep units that need Commander support within its command range, and choose promotions for the job you expect the Commander to do.

What an Army Commander does

Commanders are Civilization VII’s military organizers. The official Civilization VII combat overview describes how they pack nearby units into a single stack, move that force, and unpack the units on adjacent tiles. This lets you relocate an army as a group instead of moving each unit individually.

A Commander also supports nearby forces and can receive promotions that affect units in its command range. It is therefore better understood as a transport and support center than as a conventional combat unit. A Steam Community guide reports that Commanders cannot attack; because that is community guidance rather than an official rules reference, confirm behavior in your current game build.

How to move and deploy troops

  1. Gather troops. Move eligible nearby military units to the Commander and use the available command to pack them into its stack. The official overview establishes the packing mechanic; the precise current UI wording may vary by build.
  2. Relocate the force. Move the Commander while the troops are packed when group movement is more useful than moving units separately.
  3. Unpack at the destination. Deploy units onto adjacent tiles, then position them for their intended task—combat, a siege, or defense.
  4. Reposition for support. Keep units that depend on Commander effects close enough to remain in command range. Check the selected Commander’s range indicator and the relevant promotion description before relying on a bonus.

The pack-and-move approach is most useful for getting a force to the part of the map where it is needed. Once there, unpacking gives units separate tiles to maneuver and carry out their jobs.

Why command range matters

Commander effects are not necessarily global. The official combat overview describes support for units in command range, and a community tactics guide says many promotion bonuses require the affected units to be within that radius. That guide also reports that selecting a Commander highlights the area. Treat the highlighted area and each promotion’s in-game description as the practical check: interface details and balance can change with updates.

If troops spread beyond the range, do not assume they continue to receive a radius-based benefit. Bring the Commander along, keep the relevant units together, or check whether the particular effect has a different condition.

How to choose Commander promotions

There is no established universally best promotion order. The official overview describes broad military-support and settlement-related effects, but does not provide a complete current promotion list or a ranking. Choose according to the Commander’s actual assignment rather than following a fixed build.

  • Combat support: Favor effects that help the troops you expect to fight near the Commander. This is a better fit when the force can stay within command range.
  • Movement and coordination: Prioritize effects suited to deploying or coordinating a force when reaching the front efficiently is your main concern.
  • Settlement role: Consider settlement-oriented effects if you plan to station the Commander in a city district rather than keep it with a field army.
  • Range and force size: Weigh any radius-dependent benefit against how often your troops can realistically remain within range.

These are decision criteria drawn from the official descriptions’ broad categories, not an exhaustive list of promotions available in every current version. Read the promotion text in your game before committing, especially after an update.

What carries across Ages

The official combat announcement says Commander experience and attributes continue across Ages; earned promotions also carry forward. That makes a Commander’s development relevant beyond a single Age, although the best use of a particular Commander still depends on your current force and objectives.

Check current rules after updates

Exact command-range behavior, promotion effects, and balance may change. The official Civilization VII update-notes archive is the place to check for current patch information; the available official search result showed an “Update 1.2.5 Notes – Sep 30” entry but did not establish its year or whether it changed Commander mechanics. Verify the current in-game descriptions rather than assuming a specific range, capacity, movement bonus, or promotion order.
