Only attach to software you are authorized to modify, and check the game’s terms first. Cheat Engine’s official materials describe it for offline single-player use and educational or private purposes—not as a way to bypass protections or evade a game’s rules.
Before you begin
Cheat Engine can modify memory in offline single-player games, and its official overview also lists uses such as debugging, disassembly, memory scanning, and system inspection. For a first exercise, use the included tutorial rather than a live game. Cheat Engine’s FAQ advises checking a target game’s EULA or terms before attaching.
- Download the program from the official Cheat Engine downloads page. The page says users must be 18 or deemed an adult and describes the software as for educational and private use.
- The publisher notes that some antivirus products may mistakenly flag parts of the program. That statement does not establish that every detection is a false positive; use the official distribution route and apply your own security judgment.
- Open Cheat Engine and launch its tutorial from the Help menu.
Version availability can change. At the time of the official pages cited here, the downloads page listed version 7.7 for Mac and Windows and 7.7.1 for Linux; the homepage said version 7.7 was released for Windows, Mac, and Linux on May 29, 2026, with an initial staged release. Check the downloads page for current operating-system-specific builds.
How to attach to the tutorial process
- Start Cheat Engine’s tutorial from Help.
- In Cheat Engine, click the process-selection button (the computer icon) to open the process list.
- Select the tutorial process and confirm the selection. The official x64 guide uses
Tutorial-x86_64.exe; the name may vary with tutorial build or architecture. - Return to the tutorial and confirm that Cheat Engine is attached before scanning. The selected process is the program whose memory Cheat Engine will inspect.
For a guided first run, follow the official x64 Cheat Engine Tutorial Guide. Its health exercise gives you a controlled value to find and change.

How to find a value you know
If the tutorial displays a value you can read exactly, use an exact-value scan. The tutorial’s health exercise uses an integer and starts with the 4 Bytes value type. Treat that as an example for this exercise, not a rule for every game or every displayed number.
- In the tutorial, note the current health value.
- In Cheat Engine, enter that number in the value field, select 4 Bytes for the tutorial example, and click First Scan.
- Return to the tutorial and cause the health value to change.
- Enter the new displayed value in Cheat Engine and click Next Scan.
- Repeat the change-and-next-scan cycle until the candidate list is small enough to inspect.
A screen number is not guaranteed to be stored directly in memory in the same format. If the expected value type or exact scan does not produce useful results, reconsider what you know about the value rather than assuming every displayed number is a 4-byte integer.

How to scan when you do not know the exact value
If you can make a value change but cannot read its exact number, choose a scan type that describes what happened. Cheat Engine’s scan-type help explains the available approaches.
| What you can observe | Scan approach |
|---|---|
| You can tell whether the value changed, but not its amount or direction. | Use Changed after causing a change or Unchanged when the value should have stayed the same. |
| You know the direction, but not the exact value. | Use Increased or Decreased after making the value move in that direction. |
Make a deliberate change in the tutorial, return to Cheat Engine, and run the matching next scan. If appropriate, compare against the first scan or a saved scan. Repeating observable changes helps narrow the candidates without guessing a number.

How to inspect results and use the address list
After a scan, inspect the remaining candidates and add useful addresses to the address list. In the tutorial, use the guide’s prompts to identify the relevant result and test it in that controlled exercise. A scan result identifies a memory location for the current run; do not assume the same address will work after restarting the program.
Cheat Engine’s help index treats pointers, code tracing, structure dissection, and scripting as further topics beyond basic scanning. Learn those only after you are comfortable attaching and reducing scan results.

If a scan is slow or returns too many candidates
- An initial scan takes time: Cheat Engine’s scan guidance says duration depends on the target process’s memory use, CPU load, and computer specifications. Let the scan finish before treating it as stuck.
- Too many results remain: Make another clear change in the tutorial and run the appropriate next scan. Use an exact value only when you know it; otherwise choose a scan type matching the observable change.
- No useful results appear: Check that you attached to the tutorial process, entered the value correctly, and selected a plausible value type. The tutorial’s 4-byte setting is specific to its example, not universal.
- The address stops working after restart: This can happen because an address found in one run is not necessarily stable across runs. Pointers and related topics are the next learning step, not a guarantee that a simple scan address is permanent.
