To use CurseForge mods with Fabric, create or open a Minecraft Java profile in the CurseForge app with Fabric selected, then install mods into that profile. Before installing, confirm each mod file supports the profile’s exact Minecraft version and Fabric; add Fabric API only when the mod requires it.

Set up a Fabric profile in CurseForge

  1. Open Minecraft in the CurseForge app. CurseForge manages a separate modding environment for its profiles and supports Fabric. See CurseForge’s Minecraft getting-started guide.
  2. Create a profile or open an existing one. For a new profile, choose the Minecraft version you want and select Fabric as the modloader. CurseForge’s custom profile guide describes opening the profile and using Add More Content to install mods.

Choose and install compatible mods

Check the individual file’s details before you install it. Its Minecraft version must match your profile’s version, and its loader must be Fabric—not Forge or another loader. CurseForge identifies game-version and modloader mismatches as compatibility issues; its guide to installing Minecraft mods and modpacks explains the app’s compatibility warnings.

In the profile, choose Add More Content, search or browse for the mod, and install a file that matches those details. You can also use a mod’s Install action on the CurseForge website; it can open the app and offer a new profile or an existing compatible one. Once installed, launch the profile from CurseForge.

Check dependencies, including Fabric API

Read the mod’s listed requirements and install any dependencies it needs. Fabric’s Installing Mods guide says, “The majority of mods require Fabric API as well,” and notes that it can be downloaded from Modrinth or CurseForge. That does not mean every mod needs Fabric API, so follow the requirements for the specific mod and select a compatible file.

Fix common compatibility problems

The mod uses the wrong loader or Minecraft version

Make sure both the profile and selected mod file target the same Minecraft version and that the file supports Fabric. Fabric and Forge are separate modloaders; a Forge file is not the right choice for a Fabric profile. CurseForge’s modloader guide explains the distinction.

The mod requires a different Fabric Loader version

If a mod specifies a required Fabric Loader version, CurseForge says to open the profile’s Profile Options, select the required loader version, click Done, and relaunch. Follow its instructions for changing the modloader version, and ensure the selected version is compatible with the profile’s Minecraft version.

CurseForge marks the file incompatible

CurseForge says mod authors tag which loaders their files support. If a tag is missing, the app may mark a file incompatible even if it could technically work in-game. Treat the warning as a reason to verify the file’s loader and game-version details; it is not proof that ignoring the warning is safe.

The app warns that the mod is already installed

Check which version is already in the profile before proceeding. CurseForge warns that installing a duplicate can override the existing version.

CurseForge profile installs versus manual installation

Fabric’s standard launcher instructions describe placing mod .jar files in Minecraft’s mods folder and launching the Fabric profile. That folder workflow is for the standard launcher setup. When using CurseForge, install through the app into the intended CurseForge profile rather than assuming the standard Minecraft folder is the profile’s mod directory. Fabric also advises downloading mods only from sources you trust; use a recognized project distribution page and check the file’s version and loader details.
