DS4Windows is designed to read supported PlayStation and Nintendo controllers and turn them into virtual Xbox or PlayStation devices. A physical Xbox One, Xbox Series, Xbox Elite, Xbox 360, or other XInput-compatible controller is already the type of controller that DS4Windows usually emulates.
For ordinary PC gaming, connect the Xbox controller to Windows by USB, Bluetooth, or the Xbox Wireless Adapter and use it directly. For firmware updates and supported Xbox profiles, use Xbox Accessories. For remapping, choose Steam Input, AntiMicroX, or reWASD according to what you are trying to do.

Why DS4Windows does not detect an Xbox controller
DS4Windows has two separate concepts that are easy to confuse:
- Physical input: the PlayStation or Nintendo controller that DS4Windows reads.
- Virtual output: the controller DS4Windows creates for a game, commonly a virtual Xbox 360 controller.

GameThe current hbashton DS4Windows documentation lists supported physical inputs such as the DualShock 4, DualSense, DualSense Edge, DualShock 3, Switch Pro Controller, and Joy-Con controllers. Xbox controllers are not listed as normal physical input devices. Older DS4Windows documentation also describes the same general model.
That means terms such as Xbox controller, Xbox support, or XInput in a DS4Windows guide usually refer to the virtual Xbox output, not support for plugging a real Xbox controller into DS4Windows. Windows recognizing your controller in its controller panel—or an XInput testing tool showing it—does not mean DS4Windows will accept it as an input device.

GameMicrosoft describes XInput as the Windows API used by applications to communicate with compatible game controllers. Since Xbox controllers are already designed for this ecosystem, DS4Windows is not required.

Option 1: USB connection
- Connect the controller to the PC with a data-capable USB cable. A cable that only charges may not allow Windows or Xbox Accessories to communicate with the controller.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device. Windows normally detects and installs the required support for compatible external hardware automatically.
- Start the game.
- If the game has an input or controller setting, select its gamepad or Xbox controller option.
USB is the best first test because it avoids Bluetooth pairing problems and usually makes firmware or configuration work easier. If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, the controller itself is probably fine and the problem is likely Bluetooth, the wireless adapter, or pairing.
Option 2: Bluetooth
Bluetooth support depends on the exact Xbox controller model and the PC’s Bluetooth hardware. Compatible Xbox Wireless Controllers can connect to Windows 10 or Windows 11 over Bluetooth; Microsoft lists this capability on its Xbox Wireless Controller product page.
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
- In Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Wait for pairing to complete, then launch the game.
Bluetooth and the Xbox Wireless Adapter are not identical connection methods. Available features—and, depending on the model and game, headset behavior—can differ. If Bluetooth produces missing features, unreliable input, or connection problems, test the controller with USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Option 3: Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows into the PC.
- Press the pairing button on the adapter.
- Press the pairing button on the controller.
- Wait until the Xbox logo becomes steady.
- Launch the game and use the controller directly.
The adapter is a separate wireless method from Bluetooth. It is particularly useful when your controller or PC does not have compatible Bluetooth, or when Bluetooth does not provide the behavior you need.

Check whether Windows sees the controller
Before installing remapping software, confirm that Windows detects the controller:
- Open Windows Search.
- Search for USB game controllers.
- Open the controller settings panel.
- Select the Xbox controller and choose Properties.
- Press buttons, move the sticks, pull the triggers, and test vibration if those controls are exposed by the installed driver.
Microsoft documents this USB game controllers route for testing and configuring game controllers in Windows.
The expected result is that the controller appears in the list and its buttons and axes respond in the test panel. If it works there but does not appear in DS4Windows, that is normally expected for a physical Xbox controller—not evidence that the controller is defective.

- Controller firmware updates.
- Supported button remapping.
- Profiles.
- Configuration options for Xbox Elite controllers and some other compatible Xbox devices.
Microsoft says button mapping and profiles are available for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers, but the exact features depend on the model. A standard Xbox controller generally exposes fewer configuration options than an Elite model, so do not assume that every Xbox controller has the same profile or remapping features.
For a current Xbox Series controller, connect with a compatible USB-C data cable if Xbox Accessories does not detect it over Bluetooth. The Microsoft product documentation specifically notes USB-cable requirements for Windows configuration workflows. Updating the app through the Microsoft Store and testing a wired connection are sensible first steps.
Choose a remapping tool based on your goal
| What you want to do | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play ordinary PC games | Use the Xbox controller directly | Xbox controllers already provide the XInput device many PC games expect. |
| Update firmware or use supported official profiles | Xbox Accessories | It is Microsoft’s configuration tool for compatible Xbox devices. |
| Remap buttons in a Steam game | Steam Input | It can create per-game layouts and map controller inputs to other actions. |
| Map buttons to keyboard keys or mouse controls | AntiMicroX | It is designed to map gamepad controls to keyboard and mouse commands. |
| Use the controller as a desktop mouse | AntiMicroX or reWASD | Both can provide mouse-oriented mappings; reWASD offers more advanced profile features. |
| Create complex profiles, combinations, or virtual outputs | reWASD | Its documented remapping system supports controller, keyboard, mouse, and virtual-controller actions. |
| Make an Xbox controller appear as a DualShock 4 | A mapper with Xbox-to-DS4 emulation, such as reWASD | DS4Windows itself is not the Xbox-to-DS4 conversion layer. |
Remap an Xbox controller in Steam
Steam Input is usually the cleanest option for a Steam game because it can handle the game’s controller layout without requiring DS4Windows.
- Connect the Xbox controller before starting the game.
- Open the game’s controller settings or controller-layout interface in Steam.
- Choose a standard gamepad layout, or create a custom layout.
- Assign the desired buttons, sticks, triggers, keyboard keys, or mouse actions.
- Apply the layout to that game and test it.
Steam changes the names and location of controller controls between client versions, so the exact menu path may differ. Look for the game’s Controller, Controller Layout, or Steam Input controls rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSteam Input is useful for:
- Per-game button remapping.
- Games with unusual or incomplete controller support.
- Mapping controller buttons to keyboard or mouse commands.
- Non-Steam programs that you add to the Steam library.
It does not work identically for every game. Separate launchers, overlays, unsupported input styles, and anti-cheat systems can affect the result. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance specifically discusses conflicts involving overlays, XInput emulators, external launchers, and incompatible configurations.
Do not normally run Steam Input and DS4Windows together. If you are using a real Xbox controller, DS4Windows adds no useful input layer. If you are using DS4Windows with a supported PlayStation controller, decide which application should create the game-facing controller and disable the other layer unless you have a specific reason to combine them.
Use AntiMicroX for keyboard, mouse, and desktop controls
AntiMicroX is a graphical program for mapping gamepad buttons and axes to keyboard keys and mouse controls. It is a good fit when:
- A game has no native controller support.
- You want to control a game that only accepts keyboard and mouse input.
- You want to navigate the Windows desktop with a controller.
- You need straightforward profiles rather than a virtual PlayStation controller.
AntiMicroX documentation includes common Xbox controllers among the devices that can be mapped. It works on the physical Xbox controller directly, so there is no reason to make DS4Windows detect it first.
Its limitations are equally important: it is not Xbox Accessories, so it does not replace official firmware updates, and it is not intended to provide every advanced combination or virtual-controller feature. It is best for direct keyboard-and-mouse mapping.

Use reWASD for advanced remapping or virtual-controller output
reWASD’s controller-remapping documentation describes selecting a physical controller and assigning controller, keyboard, and mouse actions. Its documentation also describes a disguise function that can emulate Xbox 360, Xbox One, DualShock, and other controller types.
reWASD is the more appropriate choice when you specifically need to:
- Remap an Xbox controller beyond the options offered by Xbox Accessories.
- Build more complex profiles or combinations.
- Map controller inputs to keyboard and mouse actions.
- Make an Xbox controller appear as a virtual DualShock 4 or another supported device.
- Create a virtual Xbox output for a game that does not handle the physical device correctly.
It is proprietary software, and some features may require a paid license. Virtual-controller software can also conflict with games, launchers, overlays, or anti-cheat systems. Use one remapping layer at a time wherever possible; every additional virtual-device layer makes duplicate input and troubleshooting more likely.
What if a game specifically requires a DualShock 4?
First determine whether the game truly requires a DualShock 4 device. Many PC games accept XInput from an Xbox controller but display Xbox button prompts. In that case, use the Xbox controller directly; changing the device type would add complexity without solving a real problem.
There are three common situations:
- The game accepts XInput but shows Xbox prompts: connect and use the Xbox controller normally.
- The game has native DualShock support: use a genuine DualShock 4 or DualSense, with the game’s own support or DS4Windows where appropriate.
- The game specifically checks for a DualShock 4: use a mapper that supports Xbox-to-virtual-DS4 emulation, such as reWASD, rather than trying to pass the Xbox controller into DS4Windows.
There is a technically possible but unnecessarily complicated chain:
Physical Xbox controller
↓
Another mapper creates a virtual DualShock 4
↓
DS4Windows detects the virtual DualShock 4
↓
DS4Windows creates another virtual controller
reWASD documents that it can emulate DualShock 4 or Xbox outputs from a physical controller. In most cases, let that application provide the required output by itself. Feeding a virtual DS4 from reWASD into DS4Windows adds another driver and software layer, can expose duplicate devices, may add practical latency, and makes failures harder to isolate. It can also fail if the game or its anti-cheat system rejects emulated devices.
Some games and anti-cheat systems may not work with virtual controllers. This is game-specific rather than a universal statement about DS4Windows or reWASD, and Steam’s controller support documentation warns about incompatibilities involving emulated input and special launchers.

DS4Windows says “No Controllers Connected”
If the connected device is a physical Xbox controller, this message is normally expected. DS4Windows is not supposed to list every controller visible to Windows.
- Use the Windows USB game controllers panel to confirm that Windows sees the Xbox controller.
- If it appears and responds there, close DS4Windows.
- Use the game’s native XInput support, Steam Input, Xbox Accessories, AntiMicroX, or reWASD according to your goal.
Do not begin by reinstalling ViGEmBus, changing DS4Windows profiles, or repeatedly reinstalling DS4Windows. Those steps address a different workflow and do not turn a physical Xbox controller into a supported DS4Windows input.

The controller works in Windows but not in one game
Test the controller in the Windows panel and then in another game. If it works elsewhere, investigate the individual game rather than DS4Windows:
- Check whether the game has disabled controller support or requires an input mode to be enabled.
- If it is a Steam game, try Steam Input with a standard gamepad layout.
- Close DS4Windows, reWASD, AntiMicroX, Xpadder, JoyToKey, and other controller utilities while testing.
- If the game uses a separate launcher, test whether the launcher or overlay is intercepting input.
- For an older game that expects DirectInput instead of XInput, use a game-specific compatibility tool rather than automatically installing DS4Windows.
- Consider that an anti-cheat system may reject virtual or emulated devices.
Steam’s controller configuration FAQ notes that overlay problems, unsupported input styles, conflicting programs, and launcher-specific behavior can all affect controller configuration.
The game sees two controllers or duplicate button presses
Duplicate input usually means that more than one physical or virtual device is exposed to the game. Common causes include:
- Steam Input and DS4Windows both active.
- reWASD and another mapper both active.
- The physical controller and a virtual controller both visible to the game.
- Several controller utilities running simultaneously.
Recover in this order:
- Close DS4Windows, reWASD, AntiMicroX, Xpadder, JoyToKey, and similar tools.
- Restart the game.
- Confirm that the physical Xbox controller works directly.
- Re-enable only one remapping layer if remapping is necessary.
- If you are using DS4Windows with a supported PlayStation controller—not with an Xbox controller—use HidHide as recommended by the relevant DS4Windows build to hide the physical device from the game and expose only the virtual output. The older DS4Windows setup documentation covers this workflow at DS4Windows Get Started.
Bluetooth pairing fails
- Charge the controller or replace its batteries.
- Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth devices.
- Restart Bluetooth or restart the PC.
- Put the controller into pairing mode again until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Pair it through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
- Test the controller over USB to separate a Bluetooth problem from a controller or game problem.
Microsoft recommends checking power, range, pairing mode, and removing and re-adding Bluetooth devices when pairing fails. If USB works consistently but Bluetooth does not, focus on the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, interference, controller model compatibility, or the pairing state.
Xbox Accessories does not detect the controller
- Connect the controller by USB rather than Bluetooth.
- Use a cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Update the Xbox Accessories app through the Microsoft Store.
- Check whether the exact controller model is supported.
- Use the Windows controller panel to verify that the hardware itself is visible before changing drivers.
A current Xbox Series controller may need a compatible USB-C data cable for configuration in the app. If Windows cannot see the controller even over USB, try another cable and USB port before troubleshooting remapping software.
Third-party controllers that identify as Xbox or XInput
Some third-party gamepads identify themselves to Windows as XInput devices. They may work directly in Windows and PC games even though DS4Windows does not recognize them as physical inputs.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse these two statements:
- It works as an Xbox/XInput controller in Windows.
- DS4Windows supports it as an input device.
DS4Windows support depends on the physical device and its identification and report format. Its virtual Xbox output is a separate layer. The DS4Windows supported-controller documentation illustrates why a controller’s ability to function as XInput is not, by itself, proof that DS4Windows can read it.
Current DS4Windows versions and fork warning
DS4Windows is not a single, perfectly uniform release channel. Different repositories and forks use different version numbers, supported devices, and driver backends. Always identify the exact repository and version before following installation instructions.
As a dated note, the hbashton project’s newest listed prerelease on August 9, 2026 was RC4.3, packaging DS4Windows 5.0.3.0, VIIPER 0.1.0, and usbip-win2 0.9.7.7. It was explicitly a prerelease. The project’s stable-release endpoint pointed to v4.0.2.3, while a separate ds4windowsapp repository listed an “official” v3.5 release dated February 9, 2026.
This matters because older guides commonly describe ViGEmBus as the essential DS4Windows driver. Older builds and current forks do not necessarily use the same backend: the hbashton DS4Windows 5 prerelease line uses the VIIPER backend and usbip-win2 in its packages. For a physical Xbox controller, none of this is a reason to install DS4Windows. Use Windows’ normal XInput path unless you have a separate, specific emulation requirement.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: DS4Windows normally does not detect or remap a physical Xbox controller because its Xbox feature is virtual output, not Xbox-controller input. Connect the Xbox controller directly to Windows; use Xbox Accessories for supported official configuration, Steam Input for Steam layouts, AntiMicroX for keyboard and mouse mapping, or reWASD when you need advanced remapping or Xbox-to-DualShock emulation.
