For example, ENTRYPOINT ["python", "-m", "myapp"] fixes the application while CMD ["--config", "/etc/myapp/config.yml"] supplies optional defaults. Use docker run image --other-flag to replace those defaults, or docker run --entrypoint /bin/sh image to replace the executable itself.

What ENTRYPOINT does
Docker’s ENTRYPOINT instruction configures an image to run as an executable. It describes the image’s primary job: a web server image starts its server, a worker image starts its worker, and a command-line image behaves like the command it contains. Docker supports two syntaxes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Syntax | Example | How Docker starts it | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exec form | ENTRYPOINT ["executable", "param1", "param2"] |
Runs the executable directly; no shell is inserted automatically. | Normal application containers and predictable argument and signal handling. |
| Shell form | ENTRYPOINT command param1 param2 |
Runs through the image shell, normally /bin/sh -c on Linux. |
Commands that intentionally require shell syntax. |
Exec form is JSON array syntax, so every element uses double quotes and the executable is separate from each argument. Docker’s documented guidance favors this form for ENTRYPOINT because the application is started directly and can normally become process ID 1 inside the container.
The official Docker reference summarizes the purpose plainly: “An ENTRYPOINT allows you to configure a container that will run as an executable.” Treat that executable as the image’s public interface. Anyone running the image should be able to tell what command is fixed, which arguments are defaults, and which values can be replaced.

ENTRYPOINT and CMD: the two-part design
The most reusable pattern is to make ENTRYPOINT stable and make CMD replaceable. Think of ENTRYPOINT as the verb and CMD as the default options.
ENTRYPOINT ["top", "-b"]
CMD ["-c"]
Starting the image with no extra arguments produces the equivalent of top -b -c. Supplying arguments after the image name replaces the CMD list while retaining the entrypoint:
docker run --rm myimage -H
That invocation runs the configured entrypoint with -H instead of -c. This is different from changing the entrypoint itself; use --entrypoint for that purpose.
| Dockerfile/runtime choice | Result |
|---|---|
ENTRYPOINT ["app"] plus CMD ["--help"] |
Default command is app --help. |
docker run image --config /tmp/test.yml |
Runs app --config /tmp/test.yml; the supplied arguments replace CMD. |
docker run --entrypoint /bin/sh -it image |
Runs /bin/sh instead of app; this is useful for inspection or recovery. |
Docker recommends that a runnable image have at least one CMD or ENTRYPOINT instruction. In practice, define both when the executable is fixed but its normal flags should remain configurable. Docker’s build best-practices wording is similar: the best use for ENTRYPOINT is to set the image’s main command and use CMD for default flags.
Working Dockerfile patterns
Directly launch the application
If no initialization wrapper is needed, point ENTRYPOINT at the application itself:
FROM python:3.13-slim
WORKDIR /app
COPY . .
ENTRYPOINT ["python", "-m", "myapp"]
CMD ["--config", "/etc/myapp/config.yml"]
The executable and its arguments are separate JSON elements. The image starts the Python module with the configuration path by default, while a caller can provide a different configuration or another supported option after the image name. This direct form also makes the process relationship obvious: Docker launches Python rather than a shell that later launches Python.

Use a setup wrapper, then hand off to the application
A wrapper is appropriate when startup must perform tasks such as preparing directories, checking configuration, or transforming environment variables before launching the real program. The wrapper should end with an exec hand-off:
#!/bin/sh
set -eu
# optional setup here
exec "$@"
A corresponding Dockerfile can be written as:
FROM alpine:3.20
COPY entrypoint.sh /usr/local/bin/entrypoint.sh
RUN chmod +x /usr/local/bin/entrypoint.sh
ENTRYPOINT ["/usr/local/bin/entrypoint.sh"]
CMD ["--help"]
When Docker starts this image, the script receives the CMD arguments. The final exec "$@" replaces the script process with the requested application and arguments. Adapt the script’s interpreter, copied files, permissions, and setup commands to the base image you choose. A wrapper is not a substitute for an executable: the script must exist at the path in the image, have execute permission, and use an interpreter available in that base image.
Exec form versus shell form
Argument handling
Exec form preserves argument boundaries exactly. In ENTRYPOINT ["python", "-m", "myapp"], Docker starts python and passes -m and myapp as separate arguments. A common error is putting the whole command in one array element:

ENTRYPOINT ["python -m myapp"]
That asks Docker to find an executable literally named python -m myapp, including the spaces. Split the executable and every argument into individual elements instead:
ENTRYPOINT ["python", "-m", "myapp"]
Exec form is JSON, not shell syntax. Use double quotes; single quotes are not JSON string delimiters and can make the instruction invalid or alter how it is parsed. Keep options that contain spaces as one JSON element when the application expects one value; do not rely on shell word-splitting to reconstruct them.
Shell features
Exec form does not automatically provide pipes, redirection, command chaining, wildcard expansion, variable expansion, or other shell operators. If those features are intentional, invoke a shell explicitly and make the hand-off behavior clear:
ENTRYPOINT ["/bin/sh", "-c", "exec myapp "$@"", "--"]
Here the shell is a deliberate part of the command. The exec keyword still matters: it replaces the shell with myapp after the shell has processed the command line. Verify that the selected base image actually contains the shell path you invoke; a minimal image may provide a different shell or no shell at all.
Why shell-form ENTRYPOINT is usually a poor default
With shell form, Docker starts a shell between itself and the application. Docker documents two consequences that often surprise users:
- Shell-form
ENTRYPOINTignoresCMDand positional arguments supplied after the image name. Those values do not become replaceable application arguments in the way they do with exec-formENTRYPOINT. - The shell can remain the container’s main process instead of the application. Signals sent by Docker may reach the shell rather than the application, complicating graceful shutdown.
Choose shell form only when its parsing behavior is required. Otherwise, use an exec-form array or an explicit wrapper that finishes with exec. This choice affects more than style: compare argument override behavior, shell-expansion needs, signal delivery, whether the image is meant to be a reusable executable, wrapper setup requirements, and how easily operators can replace the command during debugging.
PID 1, stop signals, and graceful shutdown
Docker sends a container stop signal to its main process. With an exec-form entrypoint, the application normally occupies PID 1, so it can receive the signal and perform its own shutdown logic. This is especially important for servers, workers, and other long-running processes that need to close connections, flush data, or stop child work cleanly.
A shell wrapper that never hands off remains PID 1. It may receive the signal while the actual application is a child process, leaving the application unaware of the stop request. The reliable wrapper pattern is therefore:
- Run any required setup in the script.
- Keep the caller’s arguments intact.
- Finish with
exec "$@"so the final application replaces the script.
Docker’s JSONArgsRecommended build check recommends JSON-array forms for CMD and ENTRYPOINT for this signal-handling reason. Treat a warning about shell-form arguments as a prompt to decide whether a shell is genuinely needed, not as a reason to hide the warning without changing the process model. During a review, ask which process is PID 1, whether it is the intended application, and whether the wrapper can pass every runtime argument unchanged.

Overriding an image at runtime
Replace default arguments
Use ordinary arguments after the image name when the executable should remain fixed but its defaults should change:
docker run --rm myimage --config /tmp/test.yml
For an exec-form entrypoint, Docker appends the supplied list to the entrypoint and uses it instead of the image’s CMD. This is the normal way to select a different configuration file, mode, or one-off option. Document the supported positional form for users; otherwise they may try --entrypoint when they only needed to replace a flag.
Replace the executable
Use --entrypoint when you need a different executable altogether:
docker run --rm --entrypoint /bin/sh -it myimage
This is useful when the normal startup command fails and you need to inspect the filesystem, verify permissions, check an environment value, or launch a maintenance command. It does not edit the image; it changes only that container invocation. The replacement executable still has to exist in the image, so choose a debugging command available in the selected base image.

Adding ENTRYPOINT can clear an inherited CMD
If a base image supplies a CMD and your Dockerfile adds an ENTRYPOINT, Docker resets the inherited CMD. Define the desired CMD again in your Dockerfile rather than assuming the base image’s default will still be present:
FROM some-base-image
ENTRYPOINT ["/usr/local/bin/my-app"]
CMD ["--help"]
This makes the final image’s startup contract visible in one place and prevents an unexpected empty argument list. Check the base image’s documented defaults whenever you add an entrypoint, especially when extending an image that previously ran correctly without one.
Only the last ENTRYPOINT is effective
Multiple ENTRYPOINT instructions do not create a sequence of startup commands. Only the final instruction takes effect. If an earlier stage or copied fragment defines one, replace it deliberately with the final value you want in the resulting image. A setup sequence belongs in one wrapper script or in build-time instructions, not in several competing entrypoint declarations.
Step-by-step implementation
- Define the image role. Decide whether the image should behave like one dedicated command. If it has a stable executable, that executable is a candidate for
ENTRYPOINT. - Write the command in exec form first. Put the executable in the first JSON element and each fixed argument in its own element. This avoids accidental shell parsing and keeps argument boundaries predictable.
- Move changeable defaults to CMD. Place normal flags, a default configuration path, or a default mode in an exec-form
CMD. Callers can then replace the list after the image name. - Add setup only when necessary. If directories, configuration checks, or environment preparation are required at startup, create a wrapper and make it executable in the image.
- Hand off with exec. Preserve the wrapper’s received arguments and finish with
exec "$@", making the application the final process. - Exercise both override paths. Run the image with no extra arguments, with a replacement argument list, and with
--entrypoint. These three runs reveal whether the startup contract is what you intended. - Check shutdown behavior. Start the long-running application, stop the container, and confirm that the real application—not an intermediate shell—receives the stop signal.
Common mistakes and precise fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Docker reports that an executable cannot be found, and the error includes spaces. | The entire command was placed in one JSON element. | Split the executable and arguments: ["python", "-m", "myapp"]. |
| The Dockerfile fails to parse or behaves unexpectedly around quoted arguments. | Single quotes were used in exec form. | Use valid JSON with double quotes around every element. |
| Arguments after the image name appear to do nothing. | The image uses shell-form ENTRYPOINT, which ignores CMD and positional runtime arguments. |
Convert to exec form, or intentionally invoke a shell with an explicit argument strategy. |
docker stop waits for the timeout or the application exits abruptly. |
A shell wrapper remains PID 1 and does not forward the signal. | End the wrapper with exec "$@", or launch the application directly with exec-form ENTRYPOINT. |
| The image no longer starts with the base image’s former defaults. | Defining ENTRYPOINT reset the inherited CMD. |
Add an explicit CMD in the current Dockerfile. |
| Changing an earlier entrypoint has no visible effect. | A later ENTRYPOINT instruction overrides it. |
Keep one final entrypoint definition and remove or update obsolete ones. |
| The wrapper starts locally but fails in the image. | The script’s interpreter, path, or execute permission does not match the selected base image. | Copy it to the declared path, grant execute permission, and use an interpreter present in that image. |
| Shell variables or pipes are treated as literal text. | Exec form does not invoke a shell automatically. | Invoke the required shell explicitly, then use an intentional exec hand-off. |
A practical decision framework
Choose your startup design by answering these questions in order:
- What is the image’s one primary executable? Put that executable in
ENTRYPOINTwhen the image is intended to behave like a dedicated command. - Which options are safe for callers to change? Put those defaults in
CMDso positional arguments can replace them without replacing the executable. - Does startup require shell syntax? If not, use exec form. If yes, call the shell explicitly and preserve a final
exechand-off where possible. - Does setup need a script? Use a wrapper only for real initialization work, pass its arguments through unchanged, and end it with
exec "$@". - How will operators debug it? Document the normal positional override and the
--entrypointshell override so a failed container can be inspected without rebuilding the image.
Validation checklist before shipping
- The executable and each argument are separate elements in a JSON-array
ENTRYPOINT. - Exec-form strings use double quotes.
- A replaceable default argument list is defined with
CMD. - Any shell operators are intentional and are provided by an explicitly invoked shell.
- A wrapper script is executable in the selected base image.
- The wrapper ends with
exec "$@"rather than starting the child process without a hand-off. - The current Dockerfile defines
CMDif addingENTRYPOINTmay have cleared a base image default. - There is one final
ENTRYPOINTinstruction. - The documented runtime commands distinguish replacing
CMDarguments from replacingENTRYPOINT. - The normal image run, a positional-argument override, and an
--entrypointdebugging run have each been considered.

Frequently asked questions
What does ENTRYPOINT do in a Dockerfile?
It declares the executable a container is configured to run. Use it for the image’s stable application or command, and use CMD for defaults that callers may replace.
What is the difference between ENTRYPOINT and CMD?
ENTRYPOINT establishes the executable role. With exec-form ENTRYPOINT, arguments supplied after the image name replace the CMD list. In that design, CMD is the default argument set rather than a second command that runs independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould ENTRYPOINT use exec form or shell form?
Use exec form by default. It starts the executable directly, preserves argument boundaries, and normally makes the application PID 1. Choose shell form only when shell parsing is required; remember that shell-form ENTRYPOINT ignores CMD and positional runtime arguments.
Why does docker stop not stop my application cleanly?
A shell or wrapper may be PID 1 while the application is its child, so the application does not receive the stop signal directly. Launch the application with exec form or finish the wrapper with exec "$@".
How do I override an ENTRYPOINT?
Pass --entrypoint to docker run, such as docker run --rm --entrypoint /bin/sh -it myimage. This changes the executable for that invocation only. To keep the entrypoint and replace only its defaults, put ordinary arguments after the image name.
Why are my arguments ignored?
Check whether the Dockerfile uses shell-form ENTRYPOINT. Shell form runs through a shell and ignores both the image’s CMD and positional arguments supplied at runtime. Convert to exec form or design an explicit shell command that handles arguments.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I put the whole command in one ENTRYPOINT array element?
No. ENTRYPOINT ["python -m myapp"] asks Docker to locate one executable whose name includes spaces. Use ENTRYPOINT ["python", "-m", "myapp"] instead.
What happens to a base image’s CMD when I add ENTRYPOINT?
Defining ENTRYPOINT can reset an inherited CMD. Add the desired CMD explicitly in the current Dockerfile so the final startup contract is visible and intentional.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Can a Dockerfile have several ENTRYPOINT instructions?
Only the last ENTRYPOINT has an effect. Several instructions do not form a startup sequence; keep one final definition or deliberately replace an earlier one.
The durable rule is simple: declare the container’s executable with exec-form ENTRYPOINT, place replaceable defaults in CMD, and use a shell or wrapper only when its behavior is required. That arrangement gives callers clear overrides and gives the application the best chance of receiving stop signals directly.
