In Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the animations players often call “emotes” are called taunts. To use one, equip it in the relevant class’s Taunt Loadout, then open the in-game Taunt Selection menu with the taunt control and choose it. On PC, G is the listed default key, but you can change it.
What taunts are in TF2
Taunts are character-specific animations triggered in game. The TF2 Team described them as animations you can use to announce a kill or invite someone to shoot you. Some taunts are individual animations; others involve another player.

That is broad creator guidance, not a guarantee for every taunt; loopable taunts can continue indefinitely.
How to equip a taunt in TF2
- Open the loadout for the class you want to customize.
- Choose a slot in that class’s Taunt Loadout and select a compatible taunt from your inventory.
- Check the item description if you are unsure which classes can use it. Compatibility is class-specific, and there is no single compatibility list established here.
Valve’s June 18, 2014 update introduced a Taunt Loadout with eight slots, moved taunts out of the Action Slot, and added the Taunt Selection menu. The current client’s precise interface labels may differ from that dated description.

How to use a taunt in a match
- Press the taunt control to open the Taunt Selection menu.
- Select the taunt you want to perform.
- For a weapon taunt or a partner taunt, press the taunt control again while the menu is open, as described in Valve’s 2014 update.
Some taunts require another player to participate, so check the item description before choosing one if you want to use it alone.
What key is taunt in TF2?
For the PC default controls, the Official Team Fortress Wiki lists G as the taunt key. You can change keys in the game’s settings, through the developer console, or with scripting. This default-key reference does not establish controls for every platform or custom setup.

How to get more taunts in TF2
Buy from the Mann Co. Store
Valve identifies the Mann Co. Store as a place to buy taunts. The TF2 Team’s 2015 Taunt Workshop announcement also explains that taunts can be community-created and selected by Valve from Workshop submissions.
Check Steam item listings
Valve’s online purchasing FAQ documents Steam item purchase links and the Steam Community Market as a transaction venue. These are digital-item routes. Whether a particular taunt is currently listed, marketable, available in your region, or offered at a particular price must be checked on its live listing; availability is not established for every taunt or route.

Know what a chance-based case bonus means
In its October 1, 2026 update, Valve listed five new store taunts: Hippocratic Hypocrite, Showrunner’s Spirit, Barrel Roll, One-Eyed Punt!, and Sear You Later. The update also says the Haunted Hoard Case has a chance to give a taunt Unusualifier as a bonus item. A chance-based bonus is random, not a guaranteed way to obtain a specific taunt.

How to choose a taunt
- Check class compatibility: confirm that your intended class can equip the taunt.
- Decide whether you want a solo or partner animation: partner taunts involve another player.
- Compare acquisition routes: distinguish a direct Mann Co. Store purchase from a Steam Community Market listing, and verify live availability.
- Separate guaranteed purchases from random outcomes: a case bonus described as a chance is not a substitute for buying a chosen item.
The available documentation does not establish a complete current catalog, compatibility matrix, or live price comparison, so check the game’s item descriptions and current listings for the specific taunt you want.
