Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -c copy only when the files have compatible streams and parameters; if you need to add text, normalize mixed files, or otherwise filter them, use a filtergraph and re-encode. FFmpeg does not prescribe an ideal countdown length, so choose one that suits your production and preview the transition.
Choose how the countdown should look and sound
A countdown can be visible numbers, spoken numbers or music, or both. The simplest repeatable workflow is to prepare a short countdown clip once and put it before each story. If you want the numbers drawn onto a background, you can generate the clip with FFmpeg’s drawtext filter. For spoken or musical countdowns, prepare an audio segment and include it before the story audio.
Before choosing a join method, establish whether the countdown and story files contain video, audio, or both. Their streams and parameters determine whether FFmpeg can join them without re-encoding. FFmpeg’s current online documentation follows the newest revision; check the documentation and available filters for your installed build, since older builds can differ. FFmpeg documentation
Option 1: Place a prepared countdown clip before each story
Make a file list for one story
Create a plain-text file named story-list.ffconcat with the countdown first and the story second:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'countdown.mp4'
file 'story.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 for automatic format recognition: do not add a byte-order mark or leading characters. If filenames contain spaces or special characters, quote and escape them according to the concat demuxer’s file-list syntax. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the rules.
Try stream copy only when the inputs are compatible
When the countdown and story have corresponding compatible streams, codecs, time bases, and parameters, join them without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i story-list.ffconcat -c copy story-with-countdown.mp4-safe 0 permits file paths that the demuxer’s default safety checks might reject; use it only with a list you trust. This command is not a universal way to join arbitrary MP4s. The concat demuxer expects corresponding streams and compatible properties. It adjusts timestamps, and inaccurate declared durations or differences in segment lengths can cause timestamp shifts, gaps, or artifacts. Check the official demuxer guidance before relying on stream copy.

Repeat the list for each story
For a batch, create one list per output with the same countdown file followed by that story, and give every output a distinct filename. Run a representative example first. Watch and listen across the countdown-to-story boundary before processing the rest.

Option 2: Generate a countdown with centered text
Check that your FFmpeg build has drawtext
The drawtext filter can place text over video frames and center it using expressions based on the frame and text dimensions. Its availability depends on how FFmpeg was built and on required libraries. Check your local build’s filter list and documentation before using it; the FFmpeg documentation page notes that its online manuals track the newest revision, while local documentation is relevant to older installations.
Create a one-second sample frame
This command creates a one-second black 1280×720 video with a centered white “3”. It is a starting point, not a complete 3-2-1 sequence:

-t 1 countdown-frame.mp4The chosen frame size, duration, font size, background, and text are example settings, not a standard. A real countdown needs the displayed number to change at the intervals you choose. You can do that with a time-based drawtext expression or make a separate short segment for each number and join those segments. Validate filter syntax, font availability, and shell quoting on your system. FFmpeg filter options can require additional escaping in some shells.
Once rendered, place the completed countdown clip before the story using the prepared-clip workflow above. If the generated clip and story do not have compatible streams, use a filtergraph and re-encode rather than assuming -c copy will work.
Use a filtergraph when inputs need filtering or re-encoding
Use the concat filter when you need to re-encode, add or adjust picture or sound, or normalize inputs that do not match. FFmpeg’s FAQ says of the concat filter: “This operation is recommended if you need to re-encode.” FFmpeg FAQ: joining video files

For multiple inputs, FFmpeg uses -filter_complex. The simpler -vf and -af options apply video and audio filters to a single stream. A working concat filtergraph depends on the actual streams: for example, a video-only countdown and a story with audio need a deliberate decision about what audio should accompany the countdown. Inspect the inputs first, make corresponding video and audio streams consistent, and then concatenate with re-encoding. The filters documentation covers filtergraph syntax and filters such as delay, fade, and crossfade; it does not prescribe a children’s countdown duration, sound design, or loudness target.
Pick the join method that fits your files

Handle spoken or musical countdown audio
Prepare the spoken or musical segment as audio and insert it before the story audio. If the countdown also has video, make sure the output’s audio and picture are aligned. Decide whether you want silence, narration, or a music bed under the countdown, then listen to the full transition for clipped, missing, or unexpectedly repeated sound. Those are production choices; FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a standard countdown length or loudness target.
Check the output before making a batch
- Confirm which inputs contain video and audio, and whether their streams and parameters correspond before using
-c copy. - If files differ in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, codec, or time base, plan to normalize and re-encode.
- Preview the join at the countdown-to-story boundary and check both picture and sound.
- For text overlays, confirm that
drawtextand the intended font work in your local build. - Use an output name unique to each story so a batch does not overwrite earlier results.
Troubleshooting common problems
The concat command fails or reports mismatched streams
The files may not have corresponding compatible streams or parameters. Use a filtergraph and re-encode after making the streams consistent, rather than forcing stream copy.

The join has a gap, timestamp jump, or visible artifact
Check whether the inputs’ declared durations and stream properties are compatible. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps, so duration differences can affect the join. Correct the inputs or use a filtering and re-encoding workflow.
FFmpeg says drawtext is unavailable
Your installed build may lack the filter or a required library. Check its available filters and local documentation; use a build that includes the needed support or create the countdown clip by another means before joining it.
The text is not centered or the filter command errors
Check the filter expression and quoting against your shell and FFmpeg build. The centering expressions use the frame and text dimensions; escaping requirements vary with the command environment.
The countdown picture plays but its sound is missing or awkward
Check which inputs have audio and how the output audio stream is constructed. Choose deliberately whether the countdown should have silence, speech, or music, and preview the boundary for clipping or repeated sound.
