OBS has a documented, finite reconnect policy for supported outputs; FFmpeg’s documented reconnect flags are in its HTTP protocol options, not its native RTMP options. Since YouTube encoder streams commonly use RTMP or RTMPS, do not assume those FFmpeg HTTP flags will reconnect an RTMP stream. Neither encoder’s reconnect behavior by itself guarantees that YouTube will resume the same live broadcast after an interruption.
OBS and FFmpeg reconnect controls are not equivalent
| Behavior | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Where the documented controls apply | OBS’s output API exposes reconnect settings for supported outputs. | Generic retry controls such as reconnect and reconnect_max_retries are documented in the HTTP protocol section. The native RTMP section lists separate connection options. |
| Retry limit | retry_count sets the maximum number of retries; zero disables reconnecting. |
reconnect_max_retries is documented for HTTP, with no default set. That does not establish its behavior for native RTMP output. |
| Delay behavior | You set an initial retry wait; OBS says the wait doubles on each retry. | HTTP options include retry and delay controls. They should not be presented as controls for RTMP publishing. |
| Guarantee of YouTube broadcast continuation | Not guaranteed by the local reconnect setting. | Not guaranteed by the local reconnect setting. |
FFmpeg’s native RTMP documentation covers connection parameters such as server, application, playpath, timeout or listen behavior, and TCP keepalive. It does not list a retry-count and backoff option equivalent to OBS’s documented output settings. FFmpeg’s options can vary by release and build, so check the protocol documentation and your binary’s help for the exact version in use: FFmpeg protocol documentation and OBS output API documentation.
What this means for a 24/7 YouTube stream
A reconnect is an encoder-to-ingest recovery attempt, not proof that viewers will see uninterrupted video or that the same YouTube live event will resume. The official documentation does not promise identical broadcast-state outcomes for every type of failure. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health during it: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For YouTube’s common encoder ingest workflow, the protocol distinction matters: HTTP reconnect flags do not become RTMP output retry controls merely because both workflows send media over a network. Avoid adding FFmpeg HTTP flags to an RTMP command as a presumed fix unless you have verified their effect for your exact protocol, FFmpeg version, and build.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the stream for a connection it can sustain
Retries can help after a transient interruption, but they do not repair an unstable network or an unsustainable bitrate. OBS identifies connection instability and bitrate as causes of disconnections and dropped frames, and recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi may be unstable: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- Choose YouTube encoder settings for your actual upload connection. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264 bitrate ranges of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of 24/7 reliability.
- Use OBS’s troubleshooting figure as a separate starting point. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point when troubleshooting bitrate. Do not confuse this with YouTube’s recommended encoder ranges; both are guidance, and the lower sustainable bitrate may be the practical choice.
- Prefer Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable. A wired connection can reduce one potential source of network trouble; it does not provide reconnect logic or guarantee uptime.
- Monitor the encoder and YouTube together. Encoder logs can show whether the local output reconnects, while YouTube Live Control Room shows the platform-side stream health and event status.
For changing YouTube guidance, use its current settings page rather than treating these figures as a promise of reliable operation.

Test recovery before relying on it
- Start a controlled test stream. Use the intended encoder, output protocol, stream key, and YouTube event setup. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Record the starting state. Note the encoder’s connection status and the event status and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Interrupt the network deliberately. In a controlled test, briefly disconnect the network and observe whether the encoder attempts to reconnect, how many attempts it makes, and what the logs report.
- Check YouTube’s outcome separately. Confirm whether the intended event resumes and whether stream health recovers; an encoder reconnect alone does not establish either outcome.
- Repeat after correcting the cause. If the interruption produces dropped frames or disconnection, investigate bitrate, network stability, and the relevant encoder or process logs before depending on retries for a long-running stream.
This is a recommended test plan, not a claim that either encoder has been tested here. YouTube’s guidance says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
Troubleshoot a stream that still drops
- OBS runs out of retries: its retry policy is bounded. Review the configured maximum and starting delay, then identify why the output is disconnecting; retries do not make the policy indefinite.
- FFmpeg’s HTTP flags do not restore an RTMP output: check which protocol the output uses. The documented generic reconnect controls belong to HTTP; they are not evidence of native RTMP output retries.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects continue: test a lower bitrate the connection can sustain, check for upload instability, and use wired networking where possible.
- The encoder reports reconnecting but the YouTube event does not recover as expected: inspect Live Control Room status and stream-health messages. Local output recovery and YouTube broadcast state are distinct.
- A long-running FFmpeg process fails for another reason: inspect its error output and the input, process, network, and output workflow. Reconnect documentation alone cannot diagnose conversion failures or guarantee that a process will remain healthy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based live feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
