The playlist is not a transcoder: if the files differ in streams, codecs, or time bases, normalize them or use the concat filter. Use the ingest URL and stream key or name from YouTube’s Live Control Room, follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and monitor stream health. A continuously running FFmpeg process does not guarantee YouTube will keep a live event available indefinitely.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg: Install a build with the demuxer and encoder support you need. Commands below are templates, not tested commands for every operating system, shell, FFmpeg build, or set of source files; check option placement and quoting against your installed version.
- An ordered playlist: Choose which files play and in what order. Do not rely on directory enumeration to decide the sequence.
- A YouTube Live event: Get its current stream URL and stream key or stream name from YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s API represents these as separate fields or as a combined
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAMEvalue. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. - Reliable upload capacity: Your connection must sustain the selected video and audio bitrate. Leave headroom for normal network variation.
Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it, put it in a public script, or share logs that may expose it.
Create an explicit playlist
Make a plain-text concat script, for example playlist.txt, with one file entry per video in the desired playback order:
file '/path/to/video-1.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-2.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-3.mp4'
Replace each example path with the actual path to a file. Paths containing spaces or special characters need quoting or escaping appropriate to the concat file format. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer defaults to safe=1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. Keep that safeguard on where possible; only use -safe 0 with a playlist you trust and when necessary for your paths. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Check whether the videos are compatible
The concat demuxer joins files by advancing timestamps; it does not make differently encoded files match. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases for this method. A folder of mixed videos is not guaranteed to work unchanged with stream copy. FFmpeg also uses each file’s duration to calculate timestamps, so inaccurate duration metadata or streams of unequal length can cause artifacts or gaps. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Use the concat demuxer when inputs match
If representative files have the same stream layout and compatible codec and time-base properties, the demuxer can join them without re-encoding. This is the efficient path when its compatibility requirements are met.

Normalize mixed files when they do not match
If files have different codecs, stream layouts, or time bases, prepare normalized versions with consistent streams and encoding settings, or build a workflow with FFmpeg’s concat filter. The concat filter is the option described by FFmpeg’s FAQ when re-encoding is needed; unlike the demuxer path, it involves filtering and encoding output. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files.
Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube Live
A template for the compatible-input, stream-copy route is below. Replace every placeholder, including the output endpoint, with values appropriate to your system and the YouTube event. This is illustrative, not a universal canonical command: no operating system, FFmpeg build, or sample files are specified here, so validate quoting and option placement for your version before relying on it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 1 -i "playlist.txt" -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY_OR_NAME"

Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest values rather than a hard-coded URL from an old tutorial.
The final URL is a placeholder. YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the event’s ingest details; the API describes the stream URL and stream name as separate values or a combined value. Do not copy an actual key into a public example. YouTube Live Streaming API.
If the output needs re-encoding
Remove stream copy and specify an encoder and settings that match your chosen output. For example, an H.264 workflow needs an H.264 video encoder supported by your FFmpeg build, a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, and audio encoded in a format YouTube accepts. The exact command depends on the source media, hardware or software encoder availability, target resolution and frame rate, and shell. Test representative files before leaving the stream unattended.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Follow the guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you select rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube encoder settings.
As one specific reference point, YouTube’s current table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That is a recommendation for that codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a universal minimum or the right setting for every source. The same YouTube guidance gives bitrate recommendations that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the output to your source and make sure your reliable upload capacity can sustain it.

- Use the selected codec’s recommended bitrate for the target resolution and frame rate.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where supported; keep the interval at or below four seconds.
- Test material with representative motion and audio. A static clip alone may not reveal how your settings behave on busy footage.
- Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health messages while testing and after going live.
RTMP(S) versus HLS
For the command template above, RTMPS is the practical ingest choice described by YouTube’s encoder guidance. HLS is a separate workflow, not a drop-in change to the output URL: YouTube’s HLS setup requires HTTPS POST/PUT requests, TS segments, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Its segment duration must be from one to four seconds. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments instead of one continuous stream. Use HLS only when you deliberately implement its requirements. YouTube HLS setup.
Keep the stream safe and monitor it
Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s encoder and ingest guidance does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other material, and continuous playback does not guarantee that a live event remains available indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content, and watch the Live Control Room for stream-health messages. The cited technical guidance explains ingest and stream status; it does not promise unlimited live-event duration.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects a playlist path | The path is unsafe under the default concat setting, or its quoting/escaping is incorrect. | Check the concat file syntax and paths. Prefer safe relative paths; only set -safe 0 for a trusted playlist when required. |
| Files fail to join, or playback has glitches at transitions | The files differ in streams, codecs, time bases, or duration metadata. | Compare their stream properties and duration information. Normalize inputs or use the concat filter and re-encode when needed. |
| There are gaps or timing artifacts between clips | Duration metadata may be inaccurate, or streams within files may have unequal lengths. | Inspect and correct the source files or prepare normalized inputs; the demuxer calculates subsequent timestamps using file durations. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The event’s ingest URL or stream key/name may be wrong or outdated, or the output may not match the selected ingest workflow. | Copy the current values from YouTube’s Live Control Room, keep the key private, and confirm you are using the intended RTMPS or HLS setup. |
| YouTube reports stream-health issues | Output settings may not match YouTube’s current guidance, or the connection may not sustain the bitrate reliably. | Check codec, CBR, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate, and upload capacity. Test representative motion and audio and monitor the health messages. |
| The live event stops being available even though FFmpeg was running | A running local process is not a guarantee of indefinite YouTube-side event availability. | Check the event and stream status in Live Control Room; treat FFmpeg continuity and platform availability as separate conditions. |
