Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse OBS’s Media Source to repeat one local video, and use VLC Video Source when you need an ordered playlist of files. Both are sources inside an OBS scene; neither sends the scene to YouTube by itself. To broadcast, configure OBS as the encoder for a YouTube Live stream, then test the complete scene before going public.
Which OBS source should you choose?
| Need | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video file | Media Source | It has a Loop setting that repeats the file when playback finishes. |
| Play an ordered list of media files | VLC Video Source | It supports playlists, with Loop Playlist on by default and Shuffle Playlist off by default. |
This is a workflow choice based on the controls each source documents, not a claim that one has better playback quality or reliability. OBS does not publish a comparative test establishing which source is more reliable, uses fewer resources, or transitions more seamlessly. Test your actual files and scene.
What each source does
Media Source: one file on repeat
OBS Media Source plays local audio or video files, including common formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. Enable its Loop option to replay a file after it reaches the end. If your production switches scenes, check the source’s restart-on-activation and visibility-related settings so playback behaves as intended when the scene becomes active or inactive.
VLC Video Source: a playlist
VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support beyond OBS’s built-in Media Source. It supports a playlist, and its documented Loop Playlist default is On; Shuffle Playlist defaults to Off. It also has visibility behavior and a network-caching setting. VLC must be installed for this source to work. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well.

Set up a looping video in OBS
- Prepare the media. Keep the video file accessible on the computer running OBS. For a single clip, Media Source is the direct choice; for several clips, make sure the files you want are available to add to the VLC playlist.
- Add the source to a scene. In OBS, select the scene, use the Sources panel’s add control, then choose Media Source for one file or VLC Video Source for a playlist. The exact dialog details may vary by OBS version.
- Configure playback. For Media Source, select the file and enable Loop. For VLC Video Source, add files in the order you want and inspect Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist; leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence.
- Check scene-switch behavior. Review the source’s visibility and restart-on-activation options if other scenes will be shown during the broadcast. Confirm that the video resumes or continues in the way your program needs.
- Fit and preview the picture and sound. Confirm the source is visible in the scene, framed correctly, and producing the intended audio. Use a representative clip, not just a still preview.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
The OBS source handles playback inside the scene; OBS must still encode and send the produced feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes encoder software as a way to broadcast a produced video feed and lists OBS among encoder options. Start by enabling live streaming for your channel and setting up the broadcast in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room, then configure OBS with the stream destination and key supplied for that broadcast. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
Encoder settings to check
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP.
- Video codec and frame rate: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, at up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio.
- Bitrate: The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published settings, not tests of either OBS source.
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for other resolutions, codecs, and frame rates rather than extrapolating from those examples. Keep the total stream bitrate within your available upload bandwidth and leave 20% headroom, as YouTube’s network guidance recommends.

Test before you make the broadcast public
Make a short private or unlisted rehearsal with the same media, scene, encoder settings, and network connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the event.
- Verify that a single-file loop returns to the start, or that a playlist advances in the intended order and repeats.
- Listen for missing, doubled, clipped, or unexpectedly quiet audio; check whether the source’s visibility settings affect sound when scenes change.
- Watch for black frames, incorrect framing, or media that fails to load after a scene switch.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm that your upload connection has enough headroom for the configured bitrate.
Eligibility and rights checks
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. If YouTube will not let you start a broadcast, check the channel’s current eligibility and account status in YouTube Studio.

Looping a video does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use media you own or are licensed to stream, including its music and other embedded material, and check YouTube’s copyright rules before broadcasting. Reused or repetitive material can also raise channel-monetization questions; a successful live connection alone does not establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content.

The video plays once and stops
For a single clip, open its Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, inspect the VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist setting rather than relying on the single-file control.
The playlist plays in an unexpected order
Review the order of files in the VLC playlist and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off if you need a fixed sequence. The documented default is Off, but check the setting in your source.

The video restarts or stops when changing scenes
Inspect the source’s restart-on-activation and visibility behavior. Rehearse the exact scene changes you will use; the appropriate setting depends on whether you want playback to continue while hidden or restart when shown.
YouTube does not show the OBS feed
Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the correct broadcast is open in Live Control Room, and OBS is configured with that broadcast’s stream details. Check the preview and stream-health status, and verify channel eligibility if YouTube blocks the start.
The stream drops, buffers, or reports poor health
Compare the configured total bitrate with available upload bandwidth and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Recheck encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance and run another rehearsal on the same connection.
There is no sound or the picture is wrong
Check the source’s audio and visibility settings, the scene’s framing, and the Live Control Room preview. Test with representative movement and sound before going public; a source appearing in the OBS canvas does not by itself confirm the end-to-end YouTube output is right.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than controlling playback from a local OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives one free day per account with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
