Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To send an FFmpeg stream to IBM Video Streaming, copy the selected channel’s RTMP or RTMPS URL and Stream Key from Broadcast Settings, then use those channel-issued values as an FFmpeg output destination. If you also want to publish to YouTube, configure a second destination with YouTube’s own ingest URL and stream key. The two services do not share credentials.
The exact endpoints and keys depend on your accounts. The examples below show the shape of an FFmpeg workflow, not a tested, ready-to-run command for simultaneous publishing; check the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build before using them live.
What you need before streaming
- FFmpeg installed on the computer or server that will send the stream.
- A video or other input FFmpeg can read, such as a capture device or media file.
- An IBM Video Streaming channel with permission to broadcast, plus that channel’s RTMP or RTMPS URL and Stream Key.
- If publishing to YouTube too, a YouTube live stream and its separate ingest URL and Stream Key from Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained upload bandwidth for the chosen output profile. For a simultaneous stream, allow for the total bandwidth used by both outputs.
Keep both keys private. IBM explicitly warns that its Stream Key must be kept private; treat each key as a credential that could allow someone else to publish to its destination.
Get IBM Video Streaming’s URL and key
- Sign in to IBM Video Streaming and select the channel you intend to broadcast to.
- Open Broadcast Settings, then the Encoder Settings area, and select View.
- Copy that channel’s RTMP URL and Stream Key exactly. Do not add spaces or substitute values from another channel.
- Keep the key in a secure place. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, source repository, shell history, or logs.
IBM’s dashboard instructions describe channel-based ingest values and support RTMPS. If the broadcast fails while using a third-party encoder, IBM recommends manual RTMP configuration rather than legacy Ustream plugin or IBM credential-login flows; see IBM’s encoder setup guidance.

Set up YouTube as a separate destination
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream you want to use.
- Copy YouTube’s own stream key and ingest details. Do not reuse IBM’s URL or key.
- If using RTMPS, confirm the endpoint uses the required RTMPS protocol, server, application path, and port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS ingest guide explains the required endpoint components.
YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream sent to Google’s servers. Its HLS ingest option is relevant for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, but HLS delivery has higher latency. The available IBM guidance here does not establish an IBM HLS workflow, so do not assume YouTube’s HLS setup applies to IBM.
Choose encoding settings for both destinations
Pick settings based on the actual input, available upload bandwidth, and what each platform accepts. A single encoded output sent to both services needs a profile that works for both; if their requirements differ, plan separate output settings and validate them independently.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | IBM example and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; RTMPS is recommended for encryption. RTMPS uses port 443 and requires the correct server and path. | IBM Broadcast Settings supports RTMPS and provides channel-specific ingest values. Use the URL shown for your channel. |
| Codec | YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with HDR caveats depending on protocol and setup. | The IBM Pearl-2 guide uses H.264 Main in its device-specific example; it is not a universal FFmpeg requirement. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose for the intended output; YouTube’s guidance includes up to 60 fps. | The Pearl-2 example is 1280×720 at 25 or 30 fps, not a mandatory profile. |
| Bitrate | For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 720p30 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not IBM guarantees. | The Pearl-2 example specifies 1200–4000 kbps video for its 1280×720 cloud-transcoding setup. It is an example tied to that encoder guide. |
| Rate control and keyframes | YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. | The Pearl-2 example uses one-second keyframes. Do not treat that device profile as an IBM-wide rule. |
| Audio | Use an audio format and bitrate supported by the chosen YouTube workflow. | The Pearl-2 example uses AAC at 48 kHz and 128 kbps. |
YouTube’s settings are published in its encoder guidance. IBM’s values come from its Pearl-2 guide. Neither table row should be read as a blanket guarantee that the same profile is accepted by every account or encoder.
Use FFmpeg to publish
FFmpeg’s command line takes an input, applies any requested processing, and writes one or more outputs. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and protocol documentation for your installed version. The following is schematic: replace every placeholder with values for your own input and destinations, and verify multi-output syntax against your build.

This illustrates the need for two destinations and separate keys; it does not establish that the command will work unchanged. FFmpeg output options apply according to their position in the command, and a second output may require its own mapping, encoding, or format options. Confirm the required syntax and supported encoders with your FFmpeg build before relying on it.
For RTMPS, use each service’s complete secure ingest URL exactly as provided, including the required protocol and path. Do not assume that adding “rtmps” to an RTMP URL is enough: YouTube specifies the endpoint server, application path, and port. IBM’s channel URL and YouTube’s endpoint are different values.

Test and monitor before an event
- Run a test stream well before the event, using representative movement and audio rather than a static screen or silent clip.
- Check that IBM receives the stream on the intended channel and that YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming signal.
- Watch the picture, audio, and stream-health indicators while the test is running. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance.
- After the test, stop the broadcast and verify the intended live-stream settings before the real event.
Troubleshoot common FFmpeg-to-platform problems
IBM rejects the connection
- Cause: The URL or key belongs to a different channel, was copied incorrectly, or has extra whitespace.
- Fix: Reopen that channel’s Broadcast Settings and copy its current values. IBM’s app setup guidance says the key is case-sensitive; preserve capitalization exactly.
- Also check: Use manual RTMP configuration for a third-party encoder instead of a legacy plugin or IBM credential-login integration.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Cause: The command uses IBM credentials, the wrong YouTube key, or an incomplete RTMPS endpoint.
- Fix: Copy the key and endpoint from the selected YouTube live stream. For RTMPS, verify protocol, server, application path, and port 443 against YouTube’s ingest instructions.
The stream starts but buffers or drops frames
- Cause: The chosen bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the encoder may not keep up with the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Fix: Compare the output bitrate with available upload bandwidth, then lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary. For two destinations, account for the bandwidth required by both outputs if FFmpeg sends separate encoded streams.
FFmpeg reports an option, encoder, or output error
- Cause: The installed build may not include the chosen encoder or support the exact command options, or output-specific options may be placed incorrectly.
- Fix: Check the local FFmpeg help and documentation for the installed version; verify its encoders, protocol support, mappings, and each output independently before combining them.
A restricted network blocks publishing
- Cause: A firewall or network policy may block outbound ingest traffic.
- Fix: Ask the network administrator to check current IBM requirements and your chosen protocol. IBM’s firewall guidance lists outbound TCP 1935 for RTMP and discusses separate secure-ingest ports; requirements can depend on the account and network, so do not hard-code a port rule without checking current guidance.
You need HDR or a codec not supported over RTMP
Review YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and account for its higher delivery latency. The IBM sources cited above do not establish HLS ingest for this workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
