You can voice chat using the console’s built-in microphone; a separate microphone is not required. Nintendo currently requires a persistent internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The no-membership open-access period ended March 31, 2026.
What you need to use GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with a persistent internet connection. Nintendo says the console checks the network during initial setup to determine whether it can support GameChat.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s no-membership GameChat Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; it has ended.
- Friends on your Nintendo Switch friend list who have also approved you for GameChat.
- A compatible USB camera only if you want video chat. It is sold separately; voice chat uses the console’s built-in microphone.

Start a GameChat room
- From the HOME Menu, open the C Menu, or press the C Button on a Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller.
- Follow the first-time setup prompts if this is your first use. Then create a GameChat room and invite friends, or accept an invitation to join someone else’s room.
- To mute or unmute yourself, open the C Menu while in the room and select the microphone control. The console’s built-in microphone handles voice chat.
Turn on video chat or share your game screen
Video chat
Connect a compatible USB camera, then open the C Menu and select the camera control to enable video. A USB-C camera can connect directly to the console; a standard USB camera can connect to the dock. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one supported option. Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee their compatibility; use the system setting called Test USB Camera to check.
Game screen sharing
Open the C Menu and select Share Game Screen. Software age ratings and parental controls can affect whether other people can view a screen. Sharing may also turn off automatically during privacy-sensitive moments, such as entering a password or payment information.

How many people can join?
Nintendo says a GameChat group can include up to 12 friends. Up to four people can use video chat and/or share their game screen at the same time; the four-person limit applies across both activities when they are in use.
Set up GameChat for a child or supervised account
Before GameChat can be used by someone under 16 or by a user with a Supervised Nintendo Account, a parent or guardian must configure GameChat parental controls in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Nintendo’s GameChat parental controls guide and parent first-time setup guide cover arranging the family group and supervised account, linking the console and app, configuring controls, and starting GameChat. The parent or guardian must register a phone number to their own Nintendo Account on the child’s behalf.

What parents can manage
- Approve which friends the child may use GameChat with. If the other account is supervised, that child’s parent must approve the connection as well.
- Allow or disable video chat. When video is allowed, permission may still be requested for each session.
- Limit the camera view to face only, person only, or full video, and withdraw permission later.
- Review whether GameChat was used, the session start time and length, camera use, and friends contacted. Nintendo says parents cannot access the conversations themselves.
Disabling a child’s video chat prevents them from seeing other users’ camera feeds. Gameplay screen sharing is controlled separately and may remain available.

Voice chat does not work
Check that first-time setup is complete, the console remains connected to the internet, you are in a room with friends who have approved you, and your microphone is not muted. Nintendo runs a network check during setup.

A USB camera is not detected
Use the Switch 2 system setting Test USB Camera. A third-party USB camera may not be compatible; Nintendo does not guarantee that cameras other than its supported examples will work.
Friends cannot see a shared game screen
Check the game’s age rating and parental settings. Also consider whether sharing has been disabled temporarily for privacy, such as while a password or payment details are being entered.

GameChat works differently in a particular game
Some GameChat behavior depends on the software. Nintendo directs players to the support information for the specific game for those details.
