Use the /gamerule command to inspect and change gameplay rules on a Minecraft Bedrock server. In chat, begin with a slash; in the Bedrock Dedicated Server console, use the same command without the slash. Boolean rules take true or false, while integer rules take a number.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For example, an authorized operator can run /gamerule keepinventory true in chat to preserve players’ items after death, or enter gamerule keepinventory true in the dedicated-server console. Run /gamerule again afterward and confirm the returned value.

Gamerules are world-level settings that change how a Bedrock world behaves without installing an add-on. They cover survival consequences, mob and block behavior, time and weather, multiplayer combat, command systems, and several pacing controls. A rule remains in effect for that world until an operator changes it again.
Microsoft’s current /gamerule command reference describes the command as one that “sets or queries a game rule value.” Its reference metadata shows a last update of April 21, 2026. The command itself does not require cheats according to that reference, but the sender still needs the required authority. The documented permission level is Game Directors; on a dedicated server this normally means an operator or a command entered by the server console.

Because these settings are global, a command entered by one player can change the experience for everyone in the world. Treat a gamerule as a server policy, not as a personal preference. Before changing one, decide whether the effect should apply to every player, every dimension, and every future session in that world.
Choose where to enter the command
In game chat
An authorized player can open the chat window and enter a command beginning with /. The leading slash tells the client that the text is a command rather than a chat message. If the command is rejected, the player may not have operator privileges even though the command is valid.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In the Bedrock Dedicated Server console
The dedicated-server console expects the command without a leading slash. Thus, the chat form /gamerule keepinventory true becomes gamerule keepinventory true at the server prompt. Do not paste the slash from a chat example into the console.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide, dated May 30, 2025, describes the server as free software distributed as a ZIP package. On Windows, start the executable named bedrock_server. On Ubuntu Linux, the documented launch form is LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server. Once the process is running, its console is an administrative command channel and is useful when no operator is online in the game.
Granting operator access
If a player needs to run gamerules from chat, an existing administrator can grant operator status from the server console with op <playername>. Give this access only to people who should be able to change world-wide settings. A player who can alter gamerules can affect every participant’s experience.
A quick, repeatable workflow
- Identify the running world and decide whether the change belongs in that world’s permanent configuration.
- Query the current setting before changing it.
- Enter the command in chat with a slash or in the dedicated-server console without one.
- Use the documented lowercase Bedrock rule name and the correct value type.
- Query again and test the result with a safe, observable action.
- Write down the final value and tell players if a core expectation has changed.
This sequence avoids changing the wrong instance, overwriting a deliberate setting, or assuming that a command succeeded merely because it produced no obvious error.
Query the current rules before changing anything
Run /gamerule by itself in chat, or gamerule by itself in the dedicated-server console. The no-argument form is documented as the query form and returns the current game-rule settings. Record the relevant value before making a change if you are administering a shared world and may need to restore its previous configuration.
Querying first prevents a common mistake: changing a rule that was already configured intentionally. It also gives you a baseline for troubleshooting. If two administrators report different behavior, have both check the rule from the same running world rather than relying on a client-side assumption.

Set Boolean gamerules
Boolean rules accept only the literal values true and false. Use this pattern in chat:
/gamerule <rule> true
/gamerule <rule> false
At the dedicated-server console, remove the slash:
gamerule <rule> true
gamerule <rule> false
Use the exact Bedrock spelling shown in the current command reference. Rule names are not interchangeable with Java Edition names, and a typo is treated as an unknown rule rather than being corrected automatically. Do not substitute words such as “on,” “off,” “yes,” or “no”; the documented Boolean syntax is specifically true or false.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set integer gamerules
Integer rules use a whole number in place of true or false:
/gamerule <rule> <integer>
The current Bedrock reference lists randomtickspeed, spawnradius, playerssleepingpercentage, maxcommandchainlength, and functioncommandlimit among the integer rules. Microsoft documents defaults and, for several of these settings, permitted limits. Those values are version-sensitive; consult the command reference that matches the server build before choosing a production value rather than assuming a value from another edition or an older release.
Use a number only. Supplying true, false, a decimal, or a value outside the documented range can cause the command to fail or produce an unintended result. After setting an integer, query the rules again and confirm that the server reports the value you intended. Change one integer at a time and observe the world long enough to identify its effect before changing another.
Common Bedrock gamerules
| Goal | Chat command | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Keep items after death | /gamerule keepinventory true |
Players retain their inventory when they die. |
| Stop mob griefing | /gamerule mobgriefing false |
Disables mob griefing behavior governed by this rule. |
| Disable player-versus-player damage | /gamerule pvp false |
Prevents players from damaging one another through the PvP rule. |
| Show coordinates | /gamerule showcoordinates true |
Displays player coordinates. |
| Freeze the day/night clock | /gamerule dodaylightcycle false |
Stops the current time from advancing until the rule is enabled again. |
| Freeze weather changes | /gamerule doweathercycle false |
Leaves the current weather in place until the cycle is enabled again. |
| Stop natural mob spawning | /gamerule domobspawning false |
Disables natural mob spawning controlled by the rule. |
| Stop TNT explosions | /gamerule tntexplodes false |
Prevents TNT from exploding through this gamerule. |
| Hide command-block output | /gamerule commandblockoutput false |
Suppresses command-block output in chat. |
| Hide remaining command feedback | /gamerule sendcommandfeedback false |
Disables broader command feedback. |
| Disable command blocks | /gamerule commandblocksenabled false |
Stops command blocks from operating in the world. |
The commands above use the lowercase Bedrock spellings documented by Microsoft. In the console, remove only the initial slash; keep the rule name and value unchanged.

Several rules sound similar but affect different systems. If explosions are the concern, tntexplodes addresses TNT while mobgriefing addresses mob-related griefing; changing one is not a substitute for changing the other. If chat is noisy, commandblockoutput hides command-block messages, whereas sendcommandfeedback suppresses broader command feedback. If the world feels static, check both cycle rules: daylight and weather are independent.
Likewise, domobspawning controls natural mob spawning, not every possible way an entity can appear. Existing mobs are not automatically removed when the rule is changed. A rule that prevents future behavior cannot undo an event that has already happened.

Build a configuration for the way your server is played
Casual survival with fewer permanent losses
Enable keepinventory when the group wants exploration and building to be the focus rather than recovering dropped items. Decide this before a new season starts if possible: changing it after deaths have already occurred cannot restore items that were dropped and lost. Pair it with showcoordinates if players need an uncomplicated way to navigate, share bases, or return to a death location.
Protected building and adventure areas
Set mobgriefing to false to prevent the mob-griefing effects covered by that rule, and set tntexplodes to false when TNT damage is not part of the server’s design. These settings address different mechanisms: changing one does not automatically disable the other. Test the exact behavior in a disposable area before applying a protection policy to a long-running world.
Static scenes, events, and tutorials
Set dodaylightcycle to false to hold the current time, and set doweathercycle to false to hold the current weather. Freeze each cycle independently; stopping the daylight clock does not stop weather changes. This combination is useful for an event arena or a tutorial where lighting and visibility must remain predictable. Re-enable the relevant rule when the event ends so the world can resume its normal cycles.
Friendly multiplayer
Set pvp to false for a cooperative server where accidental attacks should not damage players. If the group wants combat in designated areas, remember that this gamerule is global; it does not create region-by-region exceptions. Use a separate moderation or world-design system for local arenas rather than expecting the global rule to provide zones.
Command-heavy or moderated worlds
Keep commandblocksenabled at false when command blocks should not run. For an active command-block system, leave it enabled and control message volume separately. commandblockoutput suppresses messages produced by command blocks, while sendcommandfeedback suppresses broader command feedback. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other, so choose the pair deliberately when reducing chat noise.
Performance and pacing controls
The integer rules provide finer control over simulation and command workloads. randomtickspeed affects random block updates, spawnradius controls the area used for player spawning, playerssleepingpercentage determines the sleeping threshold, maxcommandchainlength limits command-chain processing, and functioncommandlimit limits commands executed by functions. Change one value at a time, observe the result, and stay within the range documented for your Bedrock version. Very aggressive values can alter crop growth, spawning, or command processing in ways that are difficult to diagnose later.

Configuration comparison
When comparing two server setups, evaluate the same categories instead of judging by a single rule:
| Category | Questions to ask | Relevant gamerules |
|---|---|---|
| Survival difficulty | Should deaths cost items, and should players damage one another? | keepinventory, pvp |
| World protection | Can mobs or TNT alter builds? | mobgriefing, tntexplodes |
| Time and ambience | Should lighting and weather continue naturally? | dodaylightcycle, doweathercycle |
| Multiplayer rhythm | How easily can a group skip night? | playerssleepingpercentage |
| Automation and moderation | Are command blocks allowed, and how much feedback should players see? | commandblocksenabled, commandblockoutput, sendcommandfeedback |
| Pacing and workload | How quickly should random updates, spawning, and command chains run? | randomtickspeed, spawnradius, maxcommandchainlength, functioncommandlimit, domobspawning |
This comparison makes trade-offs visible. A relaxed survival profile may favor keep inventory and coordinates, while a challenge profile may leave those defaults unchanged. A build server may prioritize protection and quiet command output, while an event server may temporarily freeze time and weather. Record the reason for each non-default value so a later administrator can distinguish policy from an accidental change.

Verify every change
- Run the no-argument query:
/gamerulein chat orgamerulein the server console. - Find the rule you changed in the returned settings and confirm the value exactly.
- Test the gameplay effect with a low-risk action. For example, test a protected block area before inviting the full player group, or check the clock and weather after waiting long enough to observe whether they advance.
- Record the final settings in the server’s administration notes so another operator knows which behavior is intentional.
Verification matters because a successful-looking command can still target the wrong world if several server instances are running, and a correct gamerule does not override a separate mechanic or add-on.
Troubleshoot rejected commands and unexpected behavior
The chat command says you do not have permission
Have an existing operator run the command from the console or grant your account operator status with op <playername>. The command reference lists the Game Directors permission level; ordinary players should not be expected to change world rules.
The console rejects a command that works in chat
Check the slash first. Chat requires /gamerule ...; the dedicated-server console requires gamerule ... without the slash. Confirm that you are typing into the live server process rather than an operating-system shell or a hosting dashboard field with its own command syntax.
The server reports an unknown rule
Check the exact Bedrock spelling. Common errors include adding separators, using a Java Edition name, or changing the documented lowercase form. Compare the text with the current Microsoft command reference and query the rules to confirm that the world is Bedrock rather than another edition.
The value is rejected
Boolean rules accept only true or false. Integer rules require a whole number within the documented range. Do not append units, quotation marks, or explanatory text. If you are unsure whether a rule is Boolean or integer, consult the current reference before retrying.
The rule changed but gameplay did not
Query the rule again first. If the reported value is unchanged, the original command did not reach the intended world or lacked authority. If the value is correct, test the specific mechanic: mobgriefing and tntexplodes govern different kinds of damage; commandblockoutput and sendcommandfeedback govern different message sources; and freezing daylight does not freeze weather. Existing entities, already-triggered events, add-ons, or command blocks can also make a change appear ineffective.
Players cannot connect after a server update
Align the client and server versions. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide warns that protocol compatibility can differ between minor versions and even some patch versions. Update or roll back the participating clients and server to a compatible combination before diagnosing gamerules; a connection mismatch is not fixed by changing a world rule.
Safe administration habits
- Query before changing a rule and record the original value.
- Make one change at a time so its effect is identifiable.
- Use the console for emergency changes when no trusted operator is online.
- Test destructive or global settings in a copy of the world first.
- Tell players when a rule changes a core expectation, such as inventory loss, PvP, or the day/night cycle.
- After maintenance, query the rules again and keep the resulting configuration with the server notes.
Microsoft’s “Popular Commands” guide, dated April 29, 2025, describes gamerules as controls for specific gameplay aspects with options useful for development. Treat that flexibility as administrative power: a single command affects the shared world, not just the player who entered it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I type /gamerule in chat or in the server console?
Use the leading slash in in-game chat: /gamerule keepinventory true. In the Bedrock Dedicated Server console, omit it: gamerule keepinventory true.
Do gamerules require cheats on Bedrock?
The Microsoft command reference lists “Requires Cheats? No” for /gamerule. You still need the documented authority, normally Game Directors permission through operator status or the server console.
How do I turn on keep inventory?
Run /gamerule keepinventory true in chat as an authorized operator, or gamerule keepinventory true in the server console. Query the rule afterward to confirm it reports true.
How can I stop the day or weather from changing?
Run /gamerule dodaylightcycle false to freeze the time and /gamerule doweathercycle false to freeze weather. They are independent rules, so set both if you need both effects.
What is the difference between mob griefing and TNT explosions?
mobgriefing false disables mob-griefing behavior covered by that rule. tntexplodes false prevents TNT from exploding through its rule. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

Why does the command work in chat but fail in the console?
Remove the slash at the console prompt. Also verify that you are entering the command into the running Bedrock server process, not an operating-system shell or a dashboard field with different syntax.
How do I know whether a gamerule change worked?
Run /gamerule in chat or gamerule in the console and confirm the returned value. Then perform a low-risk test, because a correct value may still be masked by an add-on, an existing entity, or a different mechanic.
The Bottom Line
Use /gamerule in Bedrock chat and gamerule in the dedicated-server console. Query first, use exact lowercase rule names with the correct Boolean or integer value, verify the result, and document global changes for the rest of the server.
