Yes, you can sometimes reach Google on a PS5—but not through an official Google, Chrome, or normal browser app. The console includes web-based help functionality, and users found unofficial ways to open broader web pages through PlayStation messages.
The method described here was reported in December 2024. It may have been changed or patched since then, so treat it as a historical workaround rather than a guaranteed 2026 feature.

Can you use Google on a PS5?
Indirectly, yes. The PS5 does not provide a normal, user-facing web-browser app, Google Search app, Google Chrome installation, or Google Play access. However, parts of the console interface can display web content.

Sony officially documents the online User’s Guide, not a general-purpose browser. You can open it from:

This is the supported route to Sony’s web-based help pages. Depending on your system software and the page you open, it may not provide unrestricted navigation to Google or the wider web. The official PS5 documentation confirms the User’s Guide path, but does not describe it as a full browser. See Sony’s PS5 safety guide.
The December 2024 messaging workaround
In December 2024, third-party reports described a way to reach the PS5’s limited web-rendering component through a clickable link in PlayStation messaging. The basic idea was:

- Send or receive a recognizable web link.
- Select the link if it appears clickable.
- Use the resulting page to follow links to Bing or Google.
This was not an official Sony feature, and the route changed quickly. Contemporary coverage reported that direct Google and Bing links were being removed or filtered, leading users to try intermediary pages instead.
Route A: the Bing workaround reported on December 21, 2024
- Press the PS button.
- Open Game Base.
- Open Friends or an existing message conversation.
- Start or open a conversation with another player.
- Send a plain, recognizable link containing
www.bing.com. - If the link becomes clickable, select it.
- When Bing opens, search for Google or enter
www.google.comif direct navigation is available.

The exact screen behavior can vary. Messaging labels, link previews, account settings, and system software may affect whether the URL is selectable. Do not assume that every PS5 model, region, or account will behave identically.
Route B: the Wikipedia intermediary reported on December 27, 2024
Later reports said Sony was also filtering direct Google and Bing URLs. Users reportedly switched to a Wikipedia page as an intermediary:

- Open a PlayStation message conversation.
- Send a plain Wikipedia URL or another recognizable Wikipedia page.
- Select the link if it appears clickable.
- On Wikipedia, search for Bing or open Wikipedia’s Bing article.
- Follow Wikipedia’s link to Bing.
- From Bing, search for Google or open Google if the page allows it.
This route was reported by PlayStation LifeStyle and corroborated by PSX Extreme. Their reports describe what users were doing in late December 2024—not a permanent or officially supported Sony procedure.
How to send a link on PS5
Sony’s current messaging instructions are:
- Press the PS button.
- Select Game Base.
- Open the Friends tab and choose a friend, or select New Message and search for a player.
- Select Messages.
- Send the message containing the link.

Messaging yourself may not be available as a normal recipient option. If you do not have an available conversation, do not assume that a self-message workaround will work on your account or current interface.

Does the trick still work in 2026?
It cannot be treated as universally working in 2026. The available reports document behavior from December 2024, not a current successful test on every PS5 system-software version, account region, or network.
Sony can change link filtering, messaging previews, server-side behavior, and browser access without preserving the December route. A system update or service change may cause the same URL to disappear, display as plain text, open an error page, or redirect to PlayStation help.
If the method works for you, it is still best understood as an unofficial access path to limited web content—not as Sony adding a supported browser to the PS5.
What to do if the link is not clickable
Common reasons include automatic URL removal, privacy or family restrictions, a PSN service problem, network-level filtering, or a change in PS5 system software.
- Try the official User’s Guide path first.
- Restart the PS5 and check its internet connection.
- Install any available system-software update.
- Try one ordinary, non-shortened Wikipedia page rather than repeatedly sending a filtered search-engine URL.
- Check whether messaging is restricted by privacy or family settings.
- Stop if Sony displays an account, spam, or policy warning.
- Use a phone, tablet, computer, or dedicated PS5 app instead.
Do not rely on changing DNS settings, clearing cookies, or repeatedly sending alternate URLs to restore the trick. There is no evidence here that those steps reliably bypass current filtering.

What the PS5’s limited web component can do

Expect slow controller-based text entry and inconsistent support for JavaScript-heavy pages, pop-ups, downloads, cookies, CAPTCHA challenges, video playback, and file handling. The experience is not equivalent to Chrome, Safari, Edge, a phone, or a computer.
Is using the workaround safe?
Opening an ordinary web page is not the same as modifying or jailbreaking the console. But the messaging-based route is unofficial, and sending links through PSN carries responsibilities.
- Use only plain, recognizable links from reputable websites.
- Do not send suspicious, shortened, obfuscated, malicious, or deceptive URLs.
- Do not use the method for phishing, malware distribution, piracy, bypassing restrictions, or exploiting PSN.
- Do not repeatedly send links after Sony removes or flags them.
- Do not enter passwords or payment details on an unfamiliar page.
Sony’s Terms of Service address spam, harmful URLs, prohibited use of bugs or vulnerabilities, and possible account enforcement. Sony’s terms also describe automated detection of potentially harmful URLs and spam messages. For account safety, follow Sony’s security best practices and avoid signing in on pages you cannot clearly verify.
When another device is the better choice
Use the workaround only for a quick lookup when you understand that it may fail. A phone, tablet, or computer is the better choice for reliable Google Search, Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, file uploads, password-manager use, multiple tabs, or sensitive accounts.
For video, use the dedicated PS5 app whenever one exists, such as YouTube, Netflix, or Twitch. Those apps are designed for console navigation and generally provide a more dependable experience than the hidden web component.
Bottom line: Google can sometimes be reached indirectly on PS5, but the December 2024 Bing and Wikipedia routes were unofficial workarounds that may no longer function. The PS5 has web-based help functionality, not a normal supported browser or Google app. If you need dependable browsing, use another device; if you need supported video or services, use the relevant PS5 app.
