Use Google Trends to compare a few candidate topics in the same location and time period, then check the trend’s direction, related searches, and fit with your channel before choosing a video idea. Treat the results as clues about relative search interest—not a forecast of views. YouTube Studio’s Trends tab can add audience-specific context where available.
Start with a viewer question
Write down a question, task, or problem a particular viewer might search for. For a gaming channel, that might be how to beat a boss, whether a new update changed a build, or how two games differ for beginners. A viewer need is a stronger starting point than a broad category such as “gaming.”
Open Google Trends Explore and enter a small set of candidate phrases. When the selector offers a relevant topic, compare that broader concept with exact search terms. Google distinguishes an exact search term from a topic, which groups related searches and can include spelling or language variations. A topic helps assess a broad concept; an exact term helps test particular wording or a very new query that may not yet have a topic classification. Make the comparison fair
Set the same geography and timeframe for every candidate. If one chart covers a country and another a worldwide audience, or one covers a week and another a year, their comparison will not answer which topic has stronger interest under equivalent conditions.

Check both recent movement and a longer period. A sharp rise may be a one-off event; a longer view can reveal a recurring seasonal pattern or show that the apparent surge is small against the topic’s usual baseline. Google Trends’ quick-comparison controls can provide historical benchmarks against preceding periods; see Google’s comparison guidance. If the chart is empty or values are very low, try fewer terms or expand the date range. Google’s troubleshooting guidance explains that low-volume searches may not produce visible data.
Interpret the chart without mistaking it for search volume
Google Trends uses an anonymized, categorized, aggregated sample of actual search requests. It divides a query’s share of searches by the total searches for the selected geography and period, then normalizes the result to a 0–100 scale. The index describes relative interest, not the number of searches. Two places with the same index can have very different search totals.
- A rising line: interest is increasing relative to the selected period; it does not establish how many people searched.
- A value of zero: the query may have too little data to display, not necessarily no searches at all.
- A small fluctuation: it may be statistical noise rather than a meaningful change.
- A spike: it is a signal to investigate, not proof that a topic is broadly popular or that a video will succeed.
Google Trends Help states: “Google Trends is not a scientific poll and shouldn’t be confused with polling data.” Its data FAQ describes the normalization and its limitations.

Use related searches to find a more useful angle
In the related-search section, “Top” lists terms commonly searched in the same session, while “Rising” highlights searches with the greatest growth against the previous period. A “Breakout” label means growth above 5,000% compared with that period. That percentage can result from a low earlier baseline; it is not a measure of a large audience.
Use these terms to find a specific sub-question, then check whether it fits your viewers and whether you can answer it well. A rising gaming query might suggest a useful guide, comparison, or update explainer, but the trend alone does not show that existing videos are poor or outdated. Google explains these labels in its related-searches guidance.
Check YouTube Studio’s Trends tab
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the Trends tab. Google says the tab can surface top searches based on your audience and saved searches, breakout videos from similar creators, recent videos, audience interest, and Shorts content gaps. A content gap can mean there are no results, no exact match, or available results are old or low quality.

The feature descriptions include activity over the last 28 days for top-search and some audience-interest or recent-video cards. The audience-interest description says it is based on videos watched more than 1,000 times per week and from the last 28 days; this describes the feature’s data basis, not a target for your channel. Availability varies by country, language, and device. YouTube also says an updated Studio experience has been gradually rolling out from July 2026, so labels or layout may differ. Consult YouTube’s Trends tab guidance for current feature details.
Use this tab as a channel-fit check, not a guarantee of demand. YouTube Analytics may suppress low-volume traffic search terms, so a missing row does not prove nobody searched for it. See YouTube’s explanation of limited Analytics data.

Combine the search with a viewer, situation, and answer. Instead of “this game is trending,” a plan might be “What returning players need to know about this week’s update” or “A beginner’s route through the new dungeon.” The title and video should satisfy that promise rather than merely repeat a popular phrase.

Search YouTube results yourself before committing. Check whether current videos address the question, how fresh they are, what format viewers expect, and which questions remain unanswered. Trends can help identify a search signal; it does not establish that competition is weak or that a new upload will receive views.

For each idea, note the exact query or topic selection, geography, timeframe, date checked, chart shape, related searches, Studio evidence, and proposed video angle. After publishing, compare the idea with your own channel analytics to learn what worked for your audience. Google Trends does not establish that using it causes more views, watch time, or channel growth.
You can export a chart to CSV if you need to compare data outside the interface. Google asks that reused Trends data be attributed to Google Trends; see its export and citation guidance.

When Google Trends’ “Trending now” is useful
Google’s separate Trending now feature concerns trending Google Search news topics, not the channel-specific YouTube Trends tab. Google says it supports more than 100 countries and regions where applicable, refreshes on average every ten minutes, and allows up to five queries to be selected for comparison. These figures are stated on Google’s Trending now help page; the feature is useful for timely search trends, but it is not a substitute for checking your own audience fit.
