To show the currently playing song on a YouTube radio livestream, read the current metadata from your Icecast stream, then use an authorized YouTube API integration to update the viewer-facing broadcast’s title or description. Updating the incoming YouTube stream resource alone is not enough: that resource describes the feed, while the broadcast corresponds to the video viewers see.
How Icecast metadata and YouTube broadcast metadata fit together
Icecast provides streaming-server software; your source client and deployed Icecast version determine how the current track information is exposed. On YouTube, two resources matter:
liveStream: describes the incoming content feed.liveBroadcast: represents the event presented to viewers and corresponds to a YouTube video.
The broadcast and its video share an ID. The broadcast’s title, description, and other video metadata are what you update for a viewer-facing change. Google notes that the title of the liveStream resource is not visible to YouTube users, so changing that title by itself will not show a now-playing track.
Plan the metadata flow
1. Confirm what Icecast actually exposes
Inspect the metadata on the specific Icecast mount and check the documentation for your deployed Icecast server and source client. ICY terminology includes a stream-title key, but the exact format and availability can differ by implementation and codec. Do not assume a particular response format until you have checked your actual stream.

2. Choose what viewers should see
Decide whether to put the track in the broadcast title, description, or both. For example, your integration might construct a title from a fixed station name plus the current artist and track. Normalize whitespace and text, and decide what to do when metadata is empty or malformed. These are design choices for your integration, not automatic Icecast-to-YouTube behavior.
3. Identify the correct YouTube broadcast
Resolve the liveBroadcast ID for the active event on the channel you intend to update. A broadcast corresponds to one video; the associated liveStream is the incoming feed, not the public-facing video metadata target.

4. Authorize the update and preserve unrelated fields
YouTube API write operations require authorization for the channel. Use an authorized broadcast update targeting the intended broadcast and the metadata fields you want viewers to see. Follow the current API reference for the required resource parts and fields. When constructing an update, preserve any existing metadata that should remain unchanged rather than unintentionally replacing it.
5. Validate the result on the actual broadcast
Test with a controlled metadata change, then check the public-facing broadcast or video to confirm the displayed field changed as intended. Monitor authorization failures, API errors, missing or malformed source metadata, duplicate updates, and retry behavior.

Choose an update cadence without assuming a universal interval
A small integration can periodically read the current metadata, compare it with the last accepted value, and send an update only when the meaningful track information changes. Alternatively, an existing automation connector may work, but verify that it supports your Icecast metadata format and can update the correct YouTube broadcast field.
The platform references do not prescribe an Icecast-to-YouTube polling interval or a universal cadence for this workflow. Set a cadence appropriate to your implementation, test it against the behavior and limits that apply to your API project, and avoid sending an update for every poll when the value has not changed. Build in safeguards for track changes and failures
- Missing metadata: decide whether to leave the last valid title in place or use a neutral station label. Do not publish an empty or broken value automatically.
- Duplicate values: compare normalized metadata with the last successfully applied value before making another write.
- Malformed text: validate the artist/title string and handle characters or formatting your chosen YouTube field should not receive.
- Authorization errors: confirm that the authorization belongs to the channel that owns the target broadcast and is still valid.
- API errors or transient failures: log the failure, retain the last known good state, and use a deliberate retry policy rather than creating an uncontrolled update loop.
- Wrong broadcast: check the broadcast ID and its association with the active event before enabling automatic writes.
