How to Use OBS VLC Video Source for a Continuous YouTube Playlist

Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to loop a fixed playlist, with shuffle off and visibility behavior set deliberately. Learn the limits of YouTube playlist URLs and how to troubleshoot playback.

To loop a fixed playlist in OBS, add a VLC Video Source, add your media items, leave Shuffle Playlist off, and turn Loop Playlist on. The source plays the listed items again when it reaches the end. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC). For reliable repeat playback, use local media files you have the right to stream; OBS documentation does not establish that a YouTube playlist page URL can be pasted in and expanded automatically.

What OBS’s VLC Video Source does—and what it does not guarantee

VLC Video Source is an OBS source for a playlist of media items. With looping enabled, it restarts the sequence after the final item. This is useful for repeating a finite set of videos in an OBS scene. OBS describes a playlist of media files, but its documentation does not promise that a YouTube playlist webpage URL will be parsed into its constituent videos.

That distinction matters: an OBS media playlist is not necessarily an online YouTube playlist that keeps tracking videos added later. yt-dlp documents YouTube playlist processing and, separately, streaming media to VLC; that does not establish native support for a YouTube playlist page URL in OBS’s VLC Video Source. VLC also warns that YouTube transmission-protocol changes can make some YouTube playback stop working. Direct URL playback may work in a given setup, but it is fragile and not guaranteed. A playlist of authorized local files is the more predictable choice when the goal is to repeat a fixed sequence.

Before you set it up

  • Install VLC. OBS will not offer VLC Video Source without it.
  • Match the architectures: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  • Prepare the media files or supported media paths you intend to list, and confirm you have the rights needed to use them in a YouTube broadcast.
  • Use OBS’s Sources dock and scene preview to add and arrange the source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains adding a source and positioning or resizing it in the scene: OBS Sources Guide.

Set up a continuous playlist in OBS

  1. Add the source. Open the target scene. In the Sources dock, click +, choose VLC Video Source, enter a name, and confirm. If that option is missing, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS and reopen OBS.
  2. Populate and order the playlist. In the source’s properties, add the media paths or URLs as playlist items. Arrange them in the order you want them to play. For a stable sequence, use local files rather than relying on a YouTube playlist webpage URL being expanded by OBS.
  3. Set repeat and order. Keep Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order. Turn Loop Playlist on so the source restarts after it runs out of media. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on its default.
  4. Choose visibility behavior. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you want audio or video to continue while another scene is active, choose a continue-playing visibility behavior if the installed OBS version provides it. Otherwise, playback may pause when you switch scenes.
  5. Review the other properties if relevant. OBS documents Network Caching at 400 ms by default; increasing the buffer may trade latency for resilience, but there is no quantified improvement established here for YouTube URLs. Audio Track defaults to track 1. Subtitles are disabled by default; if enabled, the subtitle track defaults to 1.
  6. Place and test the source. Check the scene preview, then resize and position the source with its bounding box or Edit Transform. Before going live, let the sequence reach its end and confirm it starts again. This is a recommended check, not a guarantee that every media item or network URL will play correctly.

Choosing between local files and YouTube URLs

Playlist input What to expect Continuity and maintenance
Local media files A controlled list of files that you add to the OBS VLC source. Suitable for repeating a fixed sequence. It does not depend on extracting playback URLs from YouTube.
YouTube playlist page URL OBS documentation does not establish that the source expands a page URL into all playlist videos. Not a dependable native OBS playlist workflow based on the documented behavior.
YouTube URLs through VLC or an intermediary extractor May rely on external URL extraction or playback handling rather than a native OBS playlist feature. Can break when YouTube changes transmission protocols; any intermediary may require maintenance and must be checked for current support, operating-system instructions, rights, and platform-term compliance.

VideoLAN’s VLC Media Player FAQ cautions that YouTube protocol changes can make some files obsolete and prevent VLC from streaming them. This is a compatibility warning, not a claim that every YouTube URL fails. If a direct URL stops working, there is no universal fix established here; recheck the current VLC and any external extraction workflow rather than assuming an OBS setting will restore it.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream considerations

Looping a file in OBS does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use content you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream, including music and any material embedded in a video. A successful preview or stream connection does not establish that a video complies with YouTube’s copyright or other platform rules. For a practical pre-stream review, use the copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, check that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), and reopen OBS.
  • The playlist stops after the last item: Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Items play in an unexpected order: Disable Shuffle Playlist and review the order of the listed items.
  • Playback stops after changing scenes: Check Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when visible; select a continue-playing behavior if available and desired.
  • A YouTube URL used to play but no longer does: YouTube transmission changes can disrupt VLC playback. Check for a currently maintained extraction or playback method, and confirm its instructions and terms. A YouTube playlist page URL is not documented as a guaranteed native OBS playlist input.
  • There is no sound or the wrong audio is playing: Check the source’s Audio Track property. Its documented default is track 1.
  • Subtitles are missing or incorrect: Subtitles are disabled by default. If you need them, enable the subtitle option and check the selected track, which defaults to 1.
