To use OpenMod RCon, install the OpenMod.Unturned module, configure the RocketMod-compatible RCon listener with its own TCP port and strong credentials, restart the server, then connect with an RCon client such as mcrcon. Once authenticated, you can run Unturned administration commands remotely; firewall the listener and grant only the permissions your operators need.

What OpenMod RCon does
OpenMod is a .NET plugin framework for Unturned. Its Unturned integration includes a RocketMod-compatible RCon component built around a TCP RCon client. That component accepts a remote connection, authenticates it, and presents the connection to the command system as an RCon user.

A player connects through Unturned’s gameplay network ports, while an operator connects to the RCon listener with an RCon client. The RCon port may be different from the gameplay port and should be treated as a separate administrative service.
OpenMod’s command model assigns permissions to commands. An authenticated RCon session is therefore not automatically equivalent to an unrestricted console. If a command supplied by OpenMod or a plugin is rejected, check the permission node for that command and the permissions granted to the RCon actor.

What you need before starting
- Access to the Unturned dedicated-server installation and its
Modulesdirectory. - Permission to stop and start the server.
- The OpenMod.Unturned module archive that matches the current OpenMod release for your installation.
- Access to the configuration file, service panel, or startup settings that your OpenMod/RocketMod integration uses for RCon.
- A TCP-capable RCon client, such as
mcrcon, installed on the computer from which you will administer the server. - Control of the host firewall, cloud firewall, router, or NAT rules if the client is outside the server’s local network.
Use a private address when the client is on the same network. For an Internet connection, you need the server’s reachable public address and a forwarding or firewall rule for the RCon TCP port. Do not assume that the Unturned gameplay port is also the RCon port.
Install OpenMod on the Unturned server
- Stop the server. Editing module files or configuration while the process is running can be overwritten or ignored at the next start.
- Open the Unturned installation directory. Locate its
Modulesfolder. A dedicated server normally has this folder beside the server’s other installation directories; use the path exposed by your host panel if the server is managed. - Extract the module archive. Download the current
OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zippackage and copy the containedOpenMod.Unturnedfolder intoModules. Preserve that folder name and its internal files rather than copying only individual DLLs. - Start the server once. On the first start, OpenMod downloads its core components. This startup can take noticeably longer than a normal restart, so watch the console instead of terminating the process as soon as the game server appears idle.
- Read the startup log. Confirm that OpenMod loaded and that the Unturned integration is active. If the module is not listed, stop the server and check that the folder is directly under
Modules, that the archive was extracted completely, and that the package matches the server’s supported version.
Do not create a configuration based on a random example before confirming which RCon component your installation loaded. OpenMod, RocketMod-compatible components, and hosting panels can expose different field names even when they implement the same TCP workflow.

1. Find the configuration used by your installation
Stop the server before editing. Depending on the package and host, the RCon settings may be in an OpenMod configuration file, a RocketMod-compatible configuration, or a control-panel form that writes the file for you. The authoritative location is the one referenced by the component that appeared in your startup log or by your provider’s OpenMod documentation.
Do not assume that a file with a familiar name is active. A panel can generate configuration at startup, and an integration can store its settings in a different directory from OpenMod’s core files. If a change has no effect, stop the server, identify the file or panel field actually used by the loaded component, and restart after saving valid syntax.
2. Set a dedicated username and password
Enter an RCon username if the integration provides one, and create a long, random password used only for this listener. Never reuse a password from the panel, operating-system account, database, or another game service. Avoid putting the password in screenshots, public issue reports, shared tickets, shell history, or scripts that other users can read.

Some integrations require only a password; others expose both username and password. Treat the field names in a host-specific guide as an implementation example, not a universal OpenMod schema. Match the client to the fields your installed integration actually requires.
3. Choose a dedicated TCP port
Set an RCon TCP port that is not already used by another service or server instance. The exact default is integration-specific; the Unturned gameplay default is not an RCon default. Record the selected port because the same value must be allowed through the host firewall and supplied to the client.
If you run more than one Unturned server, allocate non-overlapping gameplay and administrative ports for every instance. Unturned’s base gameplay port defaults to 27015 and uses the immediately adjacent port for additional in-game traffic. That two-port behavior matters when allocating instances, but it does not make either port automatically the RCon listener.
4. Save, restart, and verify
- Save the configuration using the syntax required by the file or panel. Keep quotation marks, indentation, and data types valid.
- Restart the server completely; a map reload or in-game restart may not reload the RCon component.
- Look for a log or panel message indicating that the RCon listener started and note the bound port.
- From the server host, verify that the process is listening on that port if your operating system provides a socket-listing tool. A listener bound only to a private interface will not accept connections sent to a public address.
Configure firewalls, NAT, and hosting panels
For a local administration setup, permit the RCon TCP port from the operator’s private network. For remote administration, allow the port through the host or cloud firewall and, on a home or office connection, forward it from the router to the server’s private address. Restrict the source address to a fixed office, VPN, or management network whenever your firewall supports an allowlist.
Unturned Internet servers may also need Fake IP or port forwarding for gameplay, and a Game Server Login Token is recommended for Internet hosting. Those requirements concern players reaching the game server; RCon is a separate administrative exposure. Open only the RCon TCP port required by the integration, and do not broaden an existing gameplay rule to cover every port.

A managed host can remove much of the network work, while self-hosting gives more direct control over the listener and firewall. In either case, ask where the RCon logs are stored and how to restart the instance after a configuration change.
Connect with mcrcon
After the listener is running and reachable, connect with an RCon client. A conceptual mcrcon invocation is:
mcrcon -H <server-address> -P <rcon-port> -p '<rcon-password>' "Help"Replace the placeholders with the server’s private or public address, the RCon TCP port, and the exact configured password. The command sends Help immediately after login so you can confirm that the session is reaching the expected server. Client builds can use different option names or argument ordering, so check the syntax displayed by your installed client before adapting the example.
If your integration has a username field and your client supports usernames, provide the configured username as required by that client. If it does not, the password may be the only credential transmitted. Never put a production credential into a command copied into a public log or shared terminal transcript; use a protected shell, an environment variable, or the client’s secure input mode when available.

Many RCon clients can remain connected after authentication. Enter a command, read the response, and close the session when finished. Keep a second administrative path, such as the local server console, available while testing a new port or permission change so a rejected remote configuration does not lock you out.

Run Unturned commands through RCon
Unturned commands can be entered in the server console or in in-game chat. Administrators normally prefix chat commands with / or @. Through RCon, send the command text itself unless your particular client or integration explicitly documents a prefix.

The command reference also includes runtime, configuration, and cheat commands. Availability and effects can change with the Unturned version, server settings, or installed plugins. Use Help on the live server rather than assuming that a command from a different version has identical arguments.
Understand OpenMod permissions
OpenMod identifies an RCon session as an RconUser actor. Its command system automatically assigns permissions to commands and is designed around permission metadata and checks rather than hardcoded actor tests.
A successful login therefore proves identity to the RCon component, not that every plugin command is allowed. If a built-in or plugin command returns a denial:
- Confirm that the command works locally for an administrator, which separates a command or plugin problem from an RCon problem.
- Identify the command’s OpenMod permission node in the plugin or command documentation.
- Inspect the permissions assigned to the RCon actor or group in your installed permission system.
- Grant only the required node, then reconnect and test the command again.
Do not work around a denial by giving an RCon account blanket permissions unless that level is genuinely required. Separate accounts or groups for routine moderation and full maintenance reduce the impact of a stolen credential.

Troubleshoot a failed connection

Use a controlled local test
When remote testing produces a timeout, test from the server host or its private network first. A local success proves that the listener and credentials work; the remaining problem is then routing or firewall policy. When local testing fails, focus on module loading, configuration, and permissions before changing router rules.
Check instance allocation
On a host running multiple servers, document each instance’s gameplay base port, adjacent gameplay port, RCon port, and public address. Unturned’s two-consecutive-port behavior means that assigning only a single free gameplay port can still collide with another instance. RCon collisions are separate and can prevent the listener from starting even when gameplay appears to work.
Secure an RCon endpoint
- Use a long, unique password and rotate it after staff changes or suspected exposure.
- Allow the TCP listener only from trusted management addresses, a VPN, or a private network when possible.
- Do not expose the listener to the entire Internet simply because the server is public.
- Keep the RCon port separate from gameplay ports and document every firewall rule.
- Limit OpenMod permissions by role; routine moderators should not automatically receive destructive maintenance commands.
- Review server and panel logs for unexpected authentication attempts or commands.
- Remove credentials from shell history, screenshots, chat, tickets, and shared configuration repositories.
- Back up the server and its configuration before changing permissions, ports, or plugin settings.
Changing the port alone is not access control. It can reduce casual scanning noise, but a reachable listener still needs strong credentials and source restrictions.
Operational checklist
- Module:

Authenticate with a client such as mcrcon, send normal command text, and handle command authorization through OpenMod permissions. Treat the listener as a privileged network service: keep its port separate from gameplay allocation, restrict who can reach it, and verify the active instance before sending destructive commands.
