To use PostgreSQL with Django, install a supported PostgreSQL adapter, create a database and restricted application role, point DATABASES["default"] at the PostgreSQL backend, and run Django’s migrations against that database. For Django 6.1, PostgreSQL 15 or newer is supported, and the recommended adapter is psycopg 3.1.12 or newer. Once the connection works, verify it with Django’s migration and application checks before tuning pooling, persistent connections, or transaction isolation for production.

What you need before connecting Django

Have these pieces ready before changing settings:

  • A PostgreSQL server reachable from the machine running Django. For a local development setup, that is commonly a PostgreSQL instance on the same computer. In production it may be on a private network or provided as a managed service.
  • A database dedicated to the application, such as myapp.
  • A PostgreSQL role (user) for Django, such as myapp_user. Give it only the privileges the application requires rather than using a superuser.
  • The database host, port, name, role name, and password. Keep the password in an environment variable or a secret store, never in source control.
  • A Python environment containing the same Django installation that will run the project.

Match the PostgreSQL version to your Django release

Version support depends on the Django release. Django 6.1 documentation states, “Django supports PostgreSQL 15 and higher.” It also requires either psycopg 3.1.12 or newer or psycopg2 2.9.9 or newer, and recommends psycopg 3. Older Django releases have different minimum PostgreSQL versions, so check the documentation for your installed Django version before provisioning a server.

Create a database and least-privilege role

Run these commands as a PostgreSQL administrator. The exact method depends on your operating system and hosting service; the SQL itself is portable.

CREATE ROLE myapp_user LOGIN PASSWORD 'replace-this-outside-source-control';
CREATE DATABASE myapp OWNER myapp_user;

Making the application role the database owner is a simple development arrangement. In a stricter production design, an administrator can own the database and grant the application role only the privileges needed for normal operation and migrations. Decide who runs schema migrations before restricting privileges: a deployment identity may need broader schema rights than the runtime identity.

Do not commit the password shown in an example. Supply it through your deployment’s secret mechanism and rotate it according to your operational policy. If the server uses host-based authentication rules, the role must also be allowed to connect from the Django application’s address.

Install the PostgreSQL adapter in Django’s environment

Install the adapter in the active virtual environment—the same environment that contains manage.py and Django. The official Django installation guidance identifies psycopg or psycopg2 as the PostgreSQL packages. For a current Django 6.1 project, prefer psycopg 3 at a version supported by that Django release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
python -m pip install "psycopg>=3.1.12"

If your project is intentionally using psycopg2, use a version compatible with your Django release; Django 6.1 requires psycopg2 2.9.9 or newer. Psycopg2 is likely to be deprecated in a future Django release, so new projects should avoid making it their long-term default.

Confirm that Python can import the adapter

python -c "import psycopg; print(psycopg.__version__)"

If this command fails, activate the project’s virtual environment and install the package there. Installing it into a system Python or a different virtual environment does not make it available to the process that starts Django.

Configure DATABASES in settings.py

Django’s PostgreSQL backend is django.db.backends.postgresql. A minimal configuration looks like this:

DATABASES = {
    "default": {
        "ENGINE": "django.db.backends.postgresql",
        "NAME": "myapp",
        "USER": "myapp_user",
        "PASSWORD": "use-an-environment-variable",
        "HOST": "127.0.0.1",
        "PORT": "5432",
    }
}

Replace every value with the values for the environment in which Django is running. Port 5432 is PostgreSQL’s conventional default, not a guarantee that your server uses it. An empty host can have different local-socket behavior than 127.0.0.1; use the host value that matches your server and authentication rules.

Read credentials and connection details from the environment

A settings module can keep non-secret defaults in code while reading deployment-specific values from environment variables. The following example uses only Python and Django settings; choose the environment-variable loader already used by your project.

import os

DATABASES = {
    "default": {
        "ENGINE": "django.db.backends.postgresql",
        "NAME": os.environ["POSTGRES_DB"],
        "USER": os.environ["POSTGRES_USER"],
        "PASSWORD": os.environ["POSTGRES_PASSWORD"],
        "HOST": os.environ.get("POSTGRES_HOST", "127.0.0.1"),
        "PORT": os.environ.get("POSTGRES_PORT", "5432"),
    }
}

Use separate values for development, testing, staging, and production. This prevents a local command from accidentally connecting to a production database and lets the same application code run in different networks.

Use PostgreSQL service and password files when appropriate

Django documents PostgreSQL service-file and password-file options through the OPTIONS dictionary. These are useful when your infrastructure already distributes a PostgreSQL service definition or manages credentials through a password file. Keep the file permissions and deployment path under the control of your operating system or secret-management system, and ensure the runtime user can read the file without exposing it to unrelated processes.

Run migrations against PostgreSQL

Django migrations are the mechanism that creates and changes your schema. Pointing DATABASES at PostgreSQL does not automatically copy an existing SQLite schema or data; it only tells Django where subsequent operations should run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the project and generate migration files for model changes:
    python manage.py makemigrations
  2. Apply the migration plan to the configured PostgreSQL database:
    python manage.py migrate
  3. Inspect which migrations are applied:
    python manage.py showmigrations

Run makemigrations when your models change and commit the resulting migration files. Run migrate during deployment or another controlled release step. PostgreSQL supports transactional DDL, which allows many schema changes to be applied atomically, but a migration can still fail because of invalid operations, missing privileges, incompatible existing data, or a required extension.

Switching from SQLite

Changing the backend setting creates a connection to PostgreSQL; it does not migrate rows from SQLite. If the SQLite database contains data you need, plan a deliberate data-transfer process, including type mapping, constraints, sequences, and validation. For an empty development database, applying the existing migration history with migrate is normally sufficient.

Verify the connection before debugging the application

Use a short, layered check rather than diagnosing a browser error first.

  1. Confirm the adapter import works in the active Python environment.
  2. Run python manage.py showmigrations. A successful database connection lets Django read migration state even if no migrations are applied yet.
  3. Run python manage.py migrate and watch for authentication, privilege, or schema errors.
  4. Start Django and exercise one read path and one write path. A read confirms basic queries; a write also tests transaction permissions, constraints, and sequence behavior.
  5. Check the PostgreSQL server logs and the Django process logs if the request fails. Record the exact host, port, database, and role used by the running process rather than relying on values in a local shell.

Use PostgreSQL-specific Django features carefully

Django includes PostgreSQL-specific fields and migration operations in addition to its cross-database features. They can be useful when your application needs PostgreSQL behavior, but they reduce portability to another database engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extensions such as hstore

An extension such as hstore can be enabled from a migration with the appropriate PostgreSQL extension operation. The database role running that migration may need elevated privileges. If the application role cannot create the extension, a database administrator must enable it outside the migration, after which the migration can use the extension’s objects.

Make extension enablement an explicit provisioning step. Verify it in every environment, including a fresh staging database, instead of assuming that a local administrator-installed extension exists in production.

Choose a production connection strategy

Production settings are a capacity decision, not merely a copy of local settings. Start with Django’s defaults, measure connection behavior, and change one variable at a time.

Persistent connections with CONN_MAX_AGE

Django controls persistent PostgreSQL connections with CONN_MAX_AGE. A nonzero value lets a worker reuse a connection for that many seconds, reducing connection setup overhead. The setting does not create unlimited capacity: every concurrent worker or process can still consume a database connection, so size the total against PostgreSQL and deployment limits. Close or recycle connections appropriately when your process model, network infrastructure, or database maintenance policy requires it.

DATABASES = {

        "USER": os.environ["POSTGRES_USER"],

        "HOST": os.environ["POSTGRES_HOST"],
        "PORT": os.environ.get("POSTGRES_PORT", "5432"),
        "CONN_MAX_AGE": 60,
    }
}

The value above is an example of a 60-second lifetime, not a universal recommendation. Calculate a connection budget from the number of web workers, background workers, administrative processes, and any pooler or monitoring clients that connect to PostgreSQL.

Psycopg connection pooling

Django supports psycopg connection pooling through the OPTIONS pool setting. When pooling is enabled, Django’s documentation requires CONN_MAX_AGE to be 0; the pool configuration, rather than Django’s persistent-connection setting, owns the pool lifetime.

DATABASES = {
    "default": {
        "ENGINE": "django.db.backends.postgresql",
        "NAME": os.environ["POSTGRES_DB"],
        "USER": os.environ["POSTGRES_USER"],
        "PASSWORD": os.environ["POSTGRES_PASSWORD"],
        "HOST": os.environ["POSTGRES_HOST"],
        "PORT": os.environ.get("POSTGRES_PORT", "5432"),
        "CONN_MAX_AGE": 0,
        "OPTIONS": {
            "pool": True,
        },
    }
}

Enable pooling only after you understand your worker count and database connection ceiling. A pool can reduce repeated connection setup, but an oversized pool can exhaust PostgreSQL connections just as easily as oversized persistent connections. Confirm the exact psycopg pool options and lifecycle behavior for the psycopg version you deploy.

Transaction isolation

Django uses PostgreSQL’s READ COMMITTED isolation level by default. Higher levels—REPEATABLE READ and SERIALIZABLE—can provide stronger consistency for workloads that need it, but they can also produce serialization-failure exceptions. If you select a higher level, wrap the affected transaction in retry logic appropriate to the operation and ensure the code is safe to execute more than once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not raise isolation globally to solve a single race condition without modeling the transaction. Often the better fix is a narrower transaction, an explicit lock, a database constraint, or an idempotent retry around the specific write.

Server-side parameter binding

With psycopg 3.1.8 or newer, Django can use server-side parameter binding when it is enabled in OPTIONS. The setting is ignored when the project uses psycopg2. Treat this as an intentional compatibility choice: verify the adapter version, test queries that use database-specific types, and keep application values parameterized rather than interpolating them into SQL strings.

Compare deployment models before choosing a host

The right PostgreSQL arrangement depends on how much database operations your team wants to own. Use these decision axes when comparing a local instance, a self-managed production server, and a managed PostgreSQL service.

Decision axis Local PostgreSQL Self-managed production PostgreSQL Managed PostgreSQL
Operational ownership Your development machine or local team Your team owns installation, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response The provider operates the database service while your team operates the Django integration
Backup and restore Usually a developer responsibility Your team designs, tests, and monitors backups and restores Service capabilities and your retention policy must be verified together
Network latency and private connectivity Often lowest when Django and PostgreSQL share a machine You choose the network and can place both tiers deliberately Region, private networking, firewall rules, and application placement affect latency
Connection limits and pooling Simple to observe but limited by the local instance You size PostgreSQL and any pool against all workers Plan around the provider’s connection limit and supported pooling options
Extension availability You can install extensions if the local administrator permits them You control installation but must maintain compatibility Only provider-supported extensions may be available
Scaling controls Manual machine changes You provision and resize infrastructure Scaling controls depend on the service’s offering and limits
Observability Local logs and process tools You assemble database and host monitoring Use provider metrics together with Django and PostgreSQL logs
Cost Uses existing development resources Includes infrastructure and operations time Includes service charges and any network, storage, or backup charges
Compliance requirements Suitable only where local handling meets policy You control the compliance architecture Verify geography, certifications, retention, access controls, and contractual terms

Provider-specific connection limits, extension lists, pricing, backup guarantees, and compliance features change over time and must be verified for the service and region you select. Django’s pooling and connection settings cannot override a provider’s server-side limit.

Troubleshoot by layer

ModuleNotFoundError: psycopg

  • Activate the virtual environment used to run Django.
  • Install the adapter there with python -m pip install.
  • Confirm the import and version from that same interpreter.
  • Check that the adapter version falls within the range supported by your Django release.

Authentication failure

Check NAME, USER, PASSWORD, HOST, and PORT as seen by the running process. Then verify that the PostgreSQL role exists, can log in, has the expected password, and is allowed by the server’s host-based authentication rules. A correct password for the wrong database or host still produces a failed connection.

Connection refused or timeout

Determine whether the failure occurs before authentication. Verify that PostgreSQL is listening on the configured host and port, that a local firewall or network policy permits the connection, and that the hostname resolves to the intended server. A refused connection commonly means no process is listening; a timeout commonly points to routing or filtering, although the exact cause depends on the network.

Migration failure

Read the first database error, then inspect unapplied migrations and their dependency order with showmigrations. Check whether the migration role has the required schema privileges, whether existing rows violate a new constraint, and whether a PostgreSQL extension required by a field or operation is enabled. If an extension needs administrator rights, have an administrator create it and rerun the migration.

Unexpected serialization failures

This usually matters after configuring REPEATABLE READ or SERIALIZABLE. Add bounded retry handling around the transaction, with backoff and an upper limit, and make sure retrying cannot duplicate an external side effect. If the workload does not require the stronger isolation level, reassess whether the added contention is justified.

A repeatable deployment checklist

  • Identify the Django release and its supported PostgreSQL and adapter versions.
  • Provision PostgreSQL and create a dedicated database and application role.
  • Store credentials outside source control.
  • Install and import psycopg in the environment that runs Django.
  • Set ENGINE to django.db.backends.postgresql and provide environment-specific connection values.
  • Run makemigrations for model changes, then migrate in the target database.
  • Use showmigrations and a real read/write request to verify the result.
  • Provision required PostgreSQL extensions explicitly and confirm role privileges.
  • Choose either persistent connections or psycopg pooling deliberately; if pooling is enabled, keep CONN_MAX_AGE at 0.
  • Measure worker counts, connection usage, latency, and database limits before increasing connection lifetimes or pool sizes.
  • If changing isolation, implement and test serialization-failure retries.

When PostgreSQL is connected correctly

A successful setup has a clear boundary between application configuration and database operations: secrets come from the environment, Django uses the PostgreSQL backend, migrations are applied to the intended database, and the role has only the permissions required by its job. Keep local, staging, and production values separate, and treat pooling, isolation, and PostgreSQL extensions as explicit operational choices rather than defaults to copy blindly.
