How to Use PRISM Live Studio with YouTube’s Normal Latency for a Loop Stream

A practical PRISM Live Studio and YouTube setup for passive loop streams, including Normal latency, encoder settings, rehearsal, and the key loop-control caveat.

For a passive loop stream, set Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under Stream Settings, then connect YouTube in PRISM Live Studio and add your video as a Media Source. One important limitation: PRISM’s cited official guide explains how to add and start a media source, but does not establish how to make it repeat continuously. Verify looping in your installed version before relying on it for a long broadcast.

What Normal latency changes—and when to use it

Latency is a YouTube Live setting, not a special PRISM encoding mode. YouTube recommends Normal latency when you do not plan to interact with viewers during the stream, describing it as the option with the lowest amount of viewer buffering. That makes it a reasonable choice for a passive loop where live interaction is not central. If chat interaction is important to the format, reconsider the other latency options instead. YouTube does not provide an exact delay figure in the cited guidance, so do not rely on a fixed number of seconds. YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency.

Set up PRISM Live Studio and add the video

  1. Connect your YouTube channel. In PRISM Desktop, open the channel list, add YouTube, and sign in. Select the connected channel for the broadcast. PRISM’s platform setup lets you edit information such as the stream title, category, and visibility before going live or during the stream. See PRISM Desktop: Getting Started and the PRISM Live Studio FAQ.
  2. Add the file as a Media Source. In the scene’s Sources area, add a Media Source and choose the video file. PRISM’s guide says that in Studio Mode a newly added media source does not play automatically. Its documented ways to start playback are to uncheck Restart playback when source becomes active before adding the source, or click Apply in Studio Mode after adding it. These steps activate playback; they do not prove that the file will repeat. See PRISM Live Studio: Using Media Source.
  3. Confirm the outgoing scene. Check that the media is visible in the scene that will be sent to YouTube, and confirm the audio source and levels. Do not assume that seeing the file listed in Sources means it is playing in the output.

Verify continuous looping before a long stream

PRISM’s official Media Source instructions cited here do not document a continuous repeat or loop control. In particular, Restart playback when source becomes active concerns playback when the source becomes active; it is not evidence of continuous repeat playback. Inspect the current source properties or a current official PRISM guide for an explicit repeat setting in your installed version. If you cannot confirm that the media restarts at its end, test the full end-of-file behavior before planning a long broadcast; do not assume the stream will loop.

Set Normal latency in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Go live to reach the Live Control Room.
  2. Open Stream Settings on the stream dashboard.
  3. Under stream latency, select Normal latency.

YouTube’s guidance is to choose Normal latency if you do not plan to interact with the audience in the live stream. Applying that recommendation to a passive loop is an inference from that criterion, not a separate YouTube rule for loop streams. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Choose output settings your connection and computer can sustain

PRISM exposes resolution, frame rate, and bitrate controls before a broadcast; its FAQ cautions that settings cannot be changed after the broadcast starts. Higher resolution and frame rate increase demands on the device and network. Choose settings your upload connection can sustain, and test with motion and audio representative of the actual video before the event.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. It recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Match the bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate using the current table in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

H.264 example in YouTube’s guidance Recommended bitrate
240p–720p 4,000 Kbps
720p at 60 fps 8,000 Kbps
1080p 10,000 Kbps
1080p at 60 fps 12,000 Kbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for the listed combinations, not universal settings for every PRISM setup. Use YouTube’s current guidance for other codecs and combinations, and reduce output demands if your upload or computer cannot sustain them reliably.

Rehearse, then start the broadcast

  1. Use PRISM’s YouTube rehearsal option from the YouTube Live Info window to check the outgoing scene, sound, and motion. PRISM says the rehearsal URL is accessible only to the streamer, and replays are not supported after rehearsal ends. Details: PRISM: Practicing with YouTube Rehearsal.
  2. Before the actual broadcast, confirm that the media is playing and that the loop behavior has been verified in your PRISM version.
  3. Start the stream from PRISM and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while it is live. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Common problems and what to check

  • The media appears in Sources but not in the output: check that the source is in the active scene and start it using the applicable Studio Mode procedure: uncheck Restart playback when source becomes active before adding it, or click Apply after adding.
  • The file plays once and stops: the cited PRISM guide does not establish a continuous loop control. Check the current source properties or official guide and test the end-of-file behavior; do not treat the restart-on-activation option as repeat playback.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: check YouTube’s messages and whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again.
  • You need to change output settings after going live: PRISM’s FAQ says its broadcast settings cannot be changed once the broadcast has started. End the broadcast, adjust the settings, and start again.
  • The stream is not interactive enough for your format: Normal latency is recommended when you do not plan audience interaction. Revisit YouTube’s other latency choices if real-time interaction matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
