To use a Runeword in Diablo IV, place one Rune of Ritual and one Rune of Invocation in the two sockets of an eligible item. Perform the Ritual rune’s action to build Offering; once you have enough, the Invocation rune activates its effect. Runewords require access to the Vessel of Hatred expansion.
What a Runeword does
A Runeword combines two rune roles: the Ritual rune sets the action that generates Offering, and the Invocation rune spends that Offering to trigger an effect. Blizzard says any Ritual rune can pair with any Invocation rune. The Ritual’s conditions determine how Offering is generated, while the Invocation’s cost determines how much is needed to activate it. Some Invocation runes can also gain an Overflow bonus when you generate more Offering than they require; the bonus depends on the rune.
For a basic example, Blizzard’s feature overview describes Bac generating 50 Offering when you move 5 meters, paired with Jah, which replaces the next Evade with Sorcerer Teleport and has a 2-second cooldown. Treat those figures as an illustration from Blizzard’s explanation, not as guaranteed current values: Blizzard’s Runewords overview.
How to make and activate a Runeword
- Get access to Vessel of Hatred. Runewords are expansion content. The expansion product page describes the access requirements; its current page says purchasing Lord of Hatred unlocks Vessel of Hatred. Vessel of Hatred also requires the Diablo IV base game.
- Unlock and collect runes. Blizzard’s launch guide says to unlock runes by speaking with Ormus during the Vessel of Hatred campaign and says characters can equip them starting at level 20. These are launch-era instructions, so check the game if a later update changes the unlock path: Blizzard’s launch guide.
- Choose one rune of each type. Pick a Ritual rune for the action that produces Offering and an Invocation rune for the effect you want. Any Ritual rune can pair with any Invocation rune, according to Blizzard’s overview.
- Socket both in the same eligible item. The item must have two sockets. Blizzard lists chest armor, leg armor, two-handed weapons, and helms as examples. Insert one Ritual and one Invocation rune into those sockets to form the Runeword.
- Use the Ritual action in combat or exploration. Offering accumulates as you meet the Ritual rune’s condition. When you have enough to meet the Invocation rune’s cost, its effect activates. If your rune offers Overflow, generating more than the required amount may provide its additional bonus.
- Check the runes’ current in-game tooltips. Read the trigger, Offering generation or cost, effect, cooldown, and any Overflow details for your selected pair before building around it.
How to choose a pair for your build
There is no universally best pairing established here. A useful pair is one whose Ritual condition happens naturally in your playstyle and whose Invocation effect is worth the Offering it consumes. Check these details on the runes you have:
#1 Best Overall
- Trigger fit: Can you meet the Ritual condition reliably while playing your usual build?
- Offering pace: How much Offering does the action generate, and how often can you trigger it?
- Invocation value: Does the effect help your character in the situations you care about, and does it have a cooldown?
- Overflow: Does the Invocation have an Overflow bonus, and can your Ritual produce enough excess Offering to benefit from it?
- Socket opportunity cost: Which two-socket item will hold the pair, and what other setup must give way?
Try the pair in your own gameplay rather than treating an example or older guide as a build ranking. The available official information does not establish a complete current rune catalog or best-in-slot combinations by class and build.

Runewords have received balance and bug fixes. Blizzard’s September 30, 2026 patch notes for build 3.2.2 include fixes involving Edge and Lore Runewords and the Sol Rune. Earlier, the 2.1 patch notes said Blizzard reduced average rune costs and added Overflow bonuses to every Invocation rune in that update. Those historical changes are a reason not to rely on launch-era values: use the live tooltip for current rune details. See Blizzard’s patch notes for updates.
