RVM lets you install several Ruby interpreters on one VPS, switch the active version per shell or application, and keep each project’s gems in an isolated gemset. The practical workflow is: install RVM, install the Ruby version your application needs, select it with rvm use, create a project gemset with rvm gemset create, and make sure the selected environment is loaded whenever your deployment or service starts.

What RVM changes on a VPS
A VPS normally has one system Ruby, if Ruby is installed at all. Installing application gems into that interpreter can create conflicts: one application may require an older Rails dependency while another needs a newer release, or a system update may replace libraries your deployment depends on. RVM (Ruby Version Manager) adds a user-controlled layer between the operating system and Ruby applications. Its official description is a command-line tool for installing, managing and working with multiple Ruby environments, from interpreters to sets of gems.

Each RVM environment combines a Ruby interpreter with a collection of gems. You can keep several interpreter versions installed, select one for a shell, and create a separate gemset for every application. RVM changes shell variables and command paths so that ruby, gem, bundle and related commands resolve to the selected environment rather than to the VPS-wide system installation.
RVM is particularly useful when a VPS hosts more than one Ruby application or when an application’s required Ruby version differs from the distribution’s default. It is not a process supervisor, web server, database, firewall or deployment system; those remain separate parts of your stack.

Decide which installation mode fits the VPS
Single-user installation
A single-user installation places RVM under the account’s home directory. This is the simplest choice when one administrator or one deployment account owns the Ruby applications. The account can install interpreters and gemsets without changing Ruby for other users.
Multi-user installation
On a shared VPS, the official installation documentation describes a multi-user mode that makes RVM available system-wide. A system administrator installs it, and users then share the RVM installation while maintaining their own selected environments. Permissions and group membership must be configured exactly as the installer documentation specifies; do not copy a single-user path into a multi-user setup.

Mixed mode
The documented mixed mode provides system-wide RVM access while keeping rubies and gemsets isolated in each user’s $HOME. This can be useful when several accounts need the same management command but must not write into one another’s application environments.
Choose the mode before installing. Moving an existing installation between modes later is more disruptive than selecting the right ownership and location at the start.
Check the release channel before installing
RVM’s upgrade guidance treats stable as the current equivalent of “latest” and says stable releases are normally created every month or two with minor version increases. The latest tagged release identified in available records is RVM 1.29.12, dated January 2021, described as a small bug-fix release with binary updates. That date is old relative to a 2026 VPS, and the existence of a newer release was not established here.
Before you install or upgrade, check the current stable announcement and the project’s release list at github.com/rvm/rvm/releases. Prefer the stable channel unless you have a specific reason to test an unreleased or development build. Record the RVM version in your server notes so a later rebuild uses the same toolchain or deliberately upgrades it.
Install RVM on the VPS
Prepare the account
Log in as the user who will own the Ruby applications. Confirm that the account has a working shell and can use curl. Installing a Ruby may require native compilers, headers and other operating-system packages. The account running rvm install needs permission to install those dependencies, usually through sudo.

- Use a normal, non-root account for application files whenever possible.
- Confirm the VPS distribution and architecture before choosing a Ruby release.
- Ensure the account has enough disk space for source trees, build files, installed rubies and gem caches.
- Keep a record of the Ruby version required by each application before installing anything.
Run the stable installer
The official installer is delivered through curl. A standard single-user installation is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stableIf you want the installer to install a Ruby as part of the same operation, the documented stable-with-Ruby form is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --rubyUse the installer’s multi-user option instead when the VPS is shared. That mode must be run with the administrative privileges and group setup required by the official instructions; do not run a system-wide installation as an ordinary user and assume it is equivalent.

After installation, open a new login shell or load the user installation explicitly:
source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"Check that the shell sees the function rather than an unrelated executable:
type rvm
rvm --versionThe first command should identify RVM as a shell function. If it reports that the command is missing, the RVM script was not loaded. Add the appropriate source line to the account’s login-shell configuration only after confirming which shell the VPS actually uses, then start a fresh session and test again.

rvm list knownThe list is a catalogue of versions RVM can build or obtain for the current platform; it is not a promise that every entry is supported by your application or by the operating system’s current libraries. Check your application’s Ruby requirement and its dependency lockfile first.
Install a Ruby interpreter
Install a specific version with rvm install. The RVM basics documentation uses this form:
rvm install 2.1.1That version is an example of the syntax, not a recommendation for a new application. Substitute the release required by your codebase, such as the version declared by the project’s .ruby-version or deployment documentation. A contemporary example would look like:
rvm install 3.3.0During installation RVM may compile Ruby and install system dependencies. Compilation can take considerably longer on a small VPS than on a workstation. Keep the SSH session attached to a persistent terminal such as tmux or screen if a disconnect would otherwise interrupt the build.

rvm list
ruby --version
gem --version
which rubyrvm list shows installed interpreters and the selected one. The version output confirms the interpreter; which ruby confirms that the shell path points into the RVM tree rather than to /usr/bin/ruby. Run these checks as the same user who will deploy and run the application.
Switch the active Ruby safely
Use a version for the current shell
Select an installed interpreter with:
rvm use 3.3.0The change applies to the current shell and commands started from it. It does not uninstall another Ruby and does not alter other users’ sessions.
Make a version the user’s default
When one Ruby should be selected whenever the account logs in, set it as the default:

rvm --default use 3.3.0Use a default only for accounts that have a clear primary application. On a deployment account hosting several projects, selecting the environment explicitly in each deployment is less ambiguous.

Run the following at the beginning of a deployment or maintenance session:
rvm current
ruby --version
bundle envThis prevents a common failure in which Bundler runs under the login shell’s system Ruby while the application was installed under an RVM Ruby. If the displayed interpreter is wrong, run rvm use again and repeat the checks before installing or updating gems.
Isolate projects with gemsets
Why gemsets matter
A gemset is a separate collection of gems associated with a Ruby interpreter. Keeping one gemset per project prevents one application’s dependency update from replacing or activating gems required by another. Gemsets do not replace a project’s lockfile; they provide the environment in which the locked dependencies are installed.
Create and select a project gemset
Create a gemset with:
rvm gemset create arcade_appActivate the Ruby and gemset together by appending the gemset name with @:
rvm use 3.3.0@arcade_appInstall the application’s dependencies only after this selection:
gem install bundler
bundle installUse a distinct, readable name for every application. A naming convention such as the application’s deployment name avoids accidentally installing into a similarly named project.

Inspect and remove gemsets
rvm gemset list
rvm gemset delete arcade_appDeleting a gemset removes its installed gems. Confirm that the application has been decommissioned or recreated elsewhere before deleting it; gemset deletion is separate from removing a Ruby interpreter.
Understand the global gemset
RVM supports a global gemset whose listed gems are applied when a new Ruby is installed. Treat it as a small baseline, not as a place for application dependencies. Every project should still use its own gemset and lockfile so that deployments remain reproducible.

RVM may invoke sudo to install operating-system dependencies while compiling a Ruby. The user running rvm install therefore needs sudo rights, or an administrator must install the required packages first. A user without sudo can disable RVM’s automatic dependency installation, but then the administrator or user must identify and maintain all compiler, library and header dependencies manually.
Do not grant unrestricted administrative access merely to make RVM convenient. On a shared VPS, decide which account is responsible for OS packages and document the hand-off. If an installation fails while checking dependencies, capture the missing package name, install it through the VPS distribution’s package manager, and rerun the same rvm install command.
Use RVM in a deployment workflow
Provision once
- Choose the application’s supported Ruby release and the account that owns its files.
- Install RVM in single-user, multi-user or mixed mode according to the VPS’s ownership model.
- Install the required Ruby and create a project-specific gemset.
- Verify
ruby --version,which rubyandrvm currentas the deployment account.
Deploy repeatedly
- Start a login shell that loads RVM.
- Select the exact Ruby and gemset:
rvm use 3.3.0@arcade_app. - Check the interpreter and Bundler environment before touching dependencies.
- Run
bundle installusing the project’s lockfile. - Run database migrations, asset compilation and application tests under that same selected environment.
- Restart the application process through your existing service manager so the process inherits the intended environment.
Non-interactive services do not automatically behave like your interactive SSH shell. A service launched by a supervisor may not read the account’s profile, so its startup command must load RVM or invoke the Ruby and Bundler paths belonging to the selected environment. Test a restart from the service manager, not only from an SSH prompt.

Remove Ruby versions deliberately

Replace VERSION with the exact installed release, and check rvm list first. Do not remove the interpreter used by a running application until you have switched that application to another tested environment. Gemsets associated with the removed interpreter should be treated as disposable application data and backed up or recreated as needed.
Upgrade RVM without surprising applications
Use the stable release channel rather than treating an unverified development build as “latest.” Upgrade during a maintenance window, keep the existing Ruby installations, and test each application after reloading the updated RVM scripts. An RVM upgrade should not be used as an excuse to change Ruby versions and application dependencies in the same untracked operation; separate those changes so a failure has a clear cause.
The project’s changelog has an unreleased “Next” section that has mentioned items such as OpenSSL 3 support for Ruby 3.2 and 3.3 and doas support on OpenBSD and FreeBSD. The available record does not establish whether those items shipped in a tagged release, so confirm the release notes before relying on them.
Troubleshoot the common VPS failures

Operational checklist for a production VPS
- Record the RVM release, Ruby release and gemset name for every application.
- Keep application dependencies locked and install them only inside the project gemset.
- Use a dedicated deployment account rather than root for application files.
- Test both an interactive deployment and a service-manager restart.
- Monitor disk usage: each Ruby build, source tree and gemset consumes space.
- Remove obsolete interpreters with
rvm uninstallorrvm removeonly after checking dependencies and rollback plans. - Review the current stable RVM release before rebuilding a server, because the previously identified 1.29.12 tag is from January 2021.
When RVM is the right fit
RVM is a strong fit when one VPS must host multiple Ruby versions, when projects need isolated gem collections, or when developers and operators want a per-user environment without replacing the distribution’s packages. Its main operational cost is another layer to initialize and maintain: every shell, scheduled task and service must use the intended RVM environment. If you standardize on one Ruby for one application and have no need for per-project isolation, the operating system’s packages or another deployment method may be simpler. When version coexistence and gem isolation are the requirements, the install–use–gemset workflow gives each application a predictable Ruby context.
