Streamlabs’ documented Safe Mode is a live-chat safety feature, not a verified diagnostic startup mode for Streamlabs Desktop. If you are trying to stop harmful chat or spam, use Safe Mode in the Streamlabs Dashboard or Cloudbot. If Desktop is crashing, failing to open, or unable to go live, use its diagnostic and symptom-specific troubleshooting tools instead.
What Streamlabs Safe Mode does—and what it doesn’t
Streamlabs describes Safe Mode as a way to help prevent harassment, hateful messages, and chat spam. Its documented controls are for managing a live channel’s events, alerts, and chat; they are not instructions for launching Streamlabs Desktop in a special diagnostic state or disabling Desktop plugins or customizations. Streamlabs’ available Desktop troubleshooting guidance instead points to a Diagnostic Report, Clear Cache and Restart, and fixes matched to the issue.
| Need | Use | Where it acts |
|---|---|---|
| Protect a live chat | Safe Mode in the Streamlabs Dashboard, or its Cloudbot command if configured | Recent events, alerts, and chat settings |
| Troubleshoot the Desktop app | Diagnostic Report or a procedure for the specific symptom | The Streamlabs Desktop app and its configuration |
Use Safe Mode to manage live chat
The documented Dashboard method uses Twitch credentials and Twitch channel controls. Activating it changes live-channel state, so review what it will clear or restrict before proceeding.
- Log in to the Streamlabs Dashboard with your Twitch credentials.
- Open Recent Events, then select the shield icon to open Safe Mode.
- Choose the safety features you want to activate and select Activate.
- To turn it off, return to Recent Events and deactivate Safe Mode.
What activation changes
- Recent events are cleared.
- Follower, host, and raid alerts currently in the queue are cleared, and follower alerts are disabled.
- If Cloudbot is enabled, Safe Mode can set chat to emote-only, follower-only, and subscriber-only modes, disable follower chat alerts, and clear chat history.
Enable moderator commands through Cloudbot
If you want moderators to activate the feature from Twitch chat, enable Cloudbot and its Safe Mode commands first:

- Open the Cloudbot Dashboard and make sure Cloudbot is enabled.
- Go to Commands > Default.
- In the Misc section, enable !safemode and !safemodeoff for moderators.
- A moderator can type !safemode in Twitch chat to activate it. Use !safemodeoff to deactivate it.
These instructions are specifically for Twitch credentials and Twitch chat; they do not establish identical controls for other platforms.
Troubleshoot Streamlabs Desktop instead
Collect a Diagnostic Report
For an app problem, a report gives Streamlabs support diagnostic information. In Desktop, open Settings > Get Support and select Upload Diagnostic Report. Share the resulting diagnostic code with support. The report may include app settings, scenes and sources, logs, operating-system details, CPU, memory, GPU and driver information, and device details. Review the information it collects before uploading it.

Use Clear Cache and Restart cautiously
Streamlabs documents Clear Cache and Restart under Settings > Get Support. It is a reset-style step described as starting from scratch and wiping user data like an initial install. Don’t treat it as a harmless first diagnostic step: understand the data reset and preserve anything you need before using it.
If Desktop will not go live
Streamlabs lists several possible checks, but the right one depends on the failure and your setup. Check the following where applicable:

- If you are streaming to Twitch, consider Twitch auto-optimizer where applicable.
These are issue-specific checks, not a universal sequence. If one does not match your encoder, platform, or error, don’t change it blindly.
If Desktop crashes or will not open
Streamlabs’ crash guidance includes enabling additional crash reporting, checking Windows and GPU drivers, reinstalling Desktop or running it as administrator, and checking firewall or antivirus access. If the crash continues, submit a Streamlabs support ticket with relevant details or the Diagnostic Report code. The appropriate step can depend on the crash and your Windows and hardware configuration.
