To use Spotify overlay with a game in Windows, run Spotify for Windows on the same PC, start the game, press Win+G, open the Game Bar widgets menu, and select Spotify. The widget controls playback in-game; it does not place the full Spotify desktop window over every fullscreen game.
Xbox Game Bar is the primary Windows route for controlling Spotify without alt-tabbing. The setup takes only a few steps, but Spotify must be installed, signed in, and available as a desktop app session for the widget to respond.

What do you need before opening Spotify in Game Bar?
You need Spotify for Windows, Xbox Game Bar, and a game running on the same Windows PC. The Spotify Game Bar widget depends on the desktop Spotify application rather than acting as a completely independent music player.
- Install and launch Spotify for Windows. Spotify’s documentation says the Microsoft Store version includes its Xbox Game Bar widget and may be required when Game Bar requests widget installation.
- Sign in to the Spotify desktop app. If Spotify is not logged in, the widget may remain at “Start listening” or fail to respond.
- Start the PC game. Xbox Game Bar is intended to work as a gaming overlay across most PC games, but individual games and display modes can behave differently.
Spotify says the desktop app can be minimized to the taskbar or system tray, but it must remain available to the widget. The relevant Spotify Game Bar documentation explains this same-PC requirement.
How do you open and set up the Spotify widget?
- With the game focused, press Windows key + G.
- Open the Widgets menu in Xbox Game Bar.
- Select Spotify. If prompted, sign in or complete the widget setup.
- Return to the game and use the Spotify panel for available playback controls.
- If your Game Bar version shows a pin control, select the pin to keep the widget visible while you return focus to the game.
The Spotify widget can provide controls such as play/pause and track navigation. The official Xbox description also mentions favoriting, shuffling, and choosing recommended playlists. Xbox describes the sequence as pressing “Win+G” to bring up Game Bar and accessing Spotify from the widgets menu; the statement appears in the May 22, 2019 Xbox announcement.

The Spotify Game Bar overlay is primarily a compact playback-control widget. It lets you manage listening without repeatedly switching away from the game, but it does not replace the complete Spotify desktop interface.
| Task | Spotify Game Bar widget | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play or pause music | Yes | Use the playback controls in the overlay. |
| Skip between tracks | Yes | Use the available previous/next controls. |
| Shuffle or repeat | Available controls may include these options | Control availability can depend on the current widget and app state. |
| Favorite a track | Supported in the official Xbox description | Use the favorite control when it is shown. |
| Select recommended playlists | Supported in the official Xbox description | Choose from recommendations exposed by the widget. |
| Browse all Spotify content | Not the widget’s main purpose | Open the Spotify app or use another overlay route for fuller browsing. |
In other words, the widget is the practical answer to “How do I control Spotify without alt-tabbing out of a game?” It is not the same as placing the full Spotify window on top of the game.

Can you pin Spotify over a fullscreen game?
You may be able to pin the Spotify widget above the game when the current Xbox Game Bar build exposes its pin control, but pinned-overlay behavior is not identical in every game or fullscreen mode.
If the widget does not appear over an exclusive-fullscreen game, switch the game to borderless fullscreen or windowed mode and press Win+G again. This is a compatibility workaround, not a guarantee that every game supports the same overlay behavior.
Why is Spotify not showing in Game Bar?
If Spotify is missing from the Game Bar widgets menu, first verify that Xbox Game Bar itself opens with Win+G, then check the relevant Windows settings and updates.
Use this troubleshooting order:
- Test Game Bar: press Win+G while the game is running. If nothing opens, resolve the Game Bar issue before troubleshooting Spotify.
- Launch Spotify directly: open Spotify for Windows and confirm that the account is signed in.
- Check the app source: if Game Bar asks you to install the Spotify widget, Spotify’s documentation says the Microsoft Store version may be needed.
- Reopen Game Bar: minimize Spotify if desired, close the Game Bar overlay, and press Win+G again.
- Update and restart: update the relevant Windows Store, Xbox Game Bar, and Spotify components, then restart Game Bar.
Spotify’s official FAQ documentation covers widget installation, sign-in, and the transition from an older Spotify widget to a newer one. The historical transition does not mean every current Windows installation will show two Spotify entries.
What should you do if the widget says “Start listening”?
If the Spotify Game Bar widget says “Start listening,” open Spotify for Windows on the same PC, sign in, leave the app running or minimized, and then close and reopen Xbox Game Bar with Win+G.

The widget can depend on the active desktop app session. A minimized Spotify window is acceptable according to Spotify’s documentation, but a closed or unsigned-in desktop app can prevent the widget from connecting correctly.

The best alternative depends on whether you need an on-screen interface or only quick playback commands.
| Method | Best for | Main limitation | Windows requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar Spotify widget | Playback control integrated into the Windows gaming overlay | Not a full Spotify browsing window | Spotify for Windows installed and running on the same PC |
| Microsoft Edge Game Assist | Viewing a browser-based Spotify page or other web content above a game | Not necessarily a one-for-one replacement for the native Spotify widget | Windows 11, compatible Edge/Game Assist support |
| Spotify keyboard shortcuts or media keys | Fast play, pause, next, previous, shuffle, or repeat commands | No in-game browsing interface | Spotify desktop app and a usable keyboard or media controls |
Microsoft Edge Game Assist
Windows 11 users can access Microsoft Edge Game Assist through Win+G. Microsoft says Game Assist can provide access to sites and services including Spotify and can be pinned above the game. Availability and behavior depend on Windows 11, Edge, and the current Game Assist support. Read Microsoft’s Edge Game Assist FAQ for the current qualification.
Spotify keyboard shortcuts
When you only need basic commands, Spotify’s Windows keyboard shortcuts can avoid opening an overlay. Spotify documents shortcuts for actions including play/pause, shuffle, repeat, previous, and next in its keyboard-shortcuts support page. The exact convenience depends on whether the game or another application captures the same keys.

For most players, the shortest reliable path is: start Spotify, sign in, start the game, press Win+G, select Spotify from Widgets, and pin the widget only if the current game and Game Bar build display it correctly. If that route fails, borderless fullscreen and a fresh Spotify sign-in are the first practical checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I browse the full Spotify app through the Game Bar overlay?
The Spotify Game Bar widget is mainly a playback-control panel, not the complete Spotify desktop window. Use the Spotify app or another supported overlay route when you need broader browsing.
Why does Spotify Game Bar say “Start listening”?
Launch Spotify for Windows on the same PC, sign in, leave it running or minimized, and reopen Xbox Game Bar with Win+G. If Game Bar requests installation, Spotify says the Microsoft Store version may be required.
Why does Spotify overlay disappear in fullscreen games?
Try borderless fullscreen or windowed mode, then press Win+G again. Exclusive fullscreen behavior depends on the game and Windows configuration, so pinned overlays are not guaranteed everywhere.
Recommended Free Tools
Is there an alternative to the Spotify Game Bar widget?
Yes, Windows 11 users can try Microsoft Edge Game Assist through Win+G. Game Assist can provide access to services including Spotify and may be pinned above a game, but it is not guaranteed to replace the native Spotify widget.
The Bottom Line
The standard way to use Spotify overlay with a game in Windows is Xbox Game Bar: run Spotify for Windows, press Win+G in the game, select the Spotify widget, and control playback. The widget is for music controls rather than full Spotify browsing; Edge Game Assist and keyboard shortcuts are useful alternatives.
