How to Use Star Wars Roleplaying Game Books With Dungeons & Dragons

Star Wars RPG books can inspire a D&D campaign, but their rules and dice do not transfer automatically. Here’s how to borrow the setting and adapt selectively.

You can use Star Wars roleplaying game books to give a Dungeons & Dragons campaign its setting, characters, factions, and adventure ideas—but their rules, statistics, and custom dice do not automatically work with D&D. Choose one D&D edition as the rules engine, then adapt only the Star Wars material your campaign needs.

First identify which Star Wars RPG book you have

“Star Wars roleplaying game” refers to several games with different rules, not one uniform system. Edge Studio’s current listings cover lines originally published by Fantasy Flight Games, including Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny. Each has its own skills, combat rules, character options, equipment, and guidance for the game master. The Edge of the Empire core rulebook and Force and Destiny core rulebook are each listed as 448-page hardcovers.

Older books may belong to West End Games’ d6 game, a Wizards of the Coast d20 game, or Saga Edition. Designer Sterling Hershey described the Wizards d20 game as more detailed and substantially based on D&D, and the later Fantasy Flight approach as returning to theatre of the mind. Those historical similarities do not establish compatibility with current D&D; check the specific book’s edition and system before adapting it. Hershey’s StarWars.com interview discusses those differences.

What transfers to a D&D campaign—and what does not

Star Wars book material How to use it in D&D
Locations, factions, era details, character concepts, and adventure premises Use as setting and story inspiration; these elements generally need no mechanical conversion.
Character options, species, skills, and special abilities Choose a D&D equivalent when one fits, or create a carefully bounded homebrew option.
Weapons, armor, vehicles, and other equipment Treat as campaign-specific design decisions. Do not assume Star Wars statistics map directly to D&D.
Star Wars checks, combat rules, advancement, and custom dice Do not import them as if they were D&D rules. Use the selected D&D rules engine to resolve actions.

The Star Wars Roleplaying Dice use custom symbols to produce narrative outcomes. A StarWars.com preview from July 9, 2014 listed 14 dice in the dice pack; that is a product specification, not a D&D conversion rule. The preview describes the dice. By contrast, the cited 2014 fifth-edition D&D Basic Rules resolve an ability check with a d20, the relevant ability modifier, proficiency when applicable, and a difficulty class. See D&D’s 2014 ability-score rules.

A practical way to adapt Star Wars material

  1. Choose the D&D edition first. Use that edition’s rules for checks, combat, character progression, and action economy. For example, the cited 2014 fifth-edition rules use d20 ability checks; do not assume another edition resolves them identically.
  2. Start with the fiction. Borrow a planet, faction, conflict, character concept, or adventure premise. Let D&D rules resolve uncertain actions rather than importing the Star Wars book’s resolution mechanics.
  3. Map only the character options you need. A concept might fit an existing D&D class, background, species option, or subclass. If it does not, decide whether a homebrew option is worth the additional design and balance work.
  4. Translate obstacles into D&D terms. Assign an ability check, skill check, or other appropriate D&D procedure. Set a difficulty that suits the situation and the chosen edition instead of carrying over an unrelated Star Wars target number.
  5. Make equipment a deliberate campaign choice. Decide how blasters, armor, and vehicles should function in your D&D campaign; their Star Wars statistics are not plug-in D&D values.
  6. Set Force-like abilities’ limits before play. You could represent them with existing spells, class features, feats, or a restricted homebrew option. Define access, effects, and costs consistently. The cited sources provide no official D&D conversion or balance table, so any such mapping is a DM’s ruling, not a published compatibility rule.
  7. Use one system to resolve each action. Do not roll both Star Wars dice and D&D dice for the same action by default. If you interpret a Star Wars narrative result as a D&D consequence, make that an adjudication—not an unplanned second roll.

Choose books according to the campaign you want

For a Star Wars campaign using its own rules

Start with the relevant Star Wars core rulebook. Edge Studio describes Edge of the Empire as the heart of that campaign, with rules, gear, adversaries, and an introductory adventure. Force and Destiny presents itself as the fundamental book for its campaign and includes rules for skill checks, combat, and the Force. Their product descriptions are available at Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny.

For a D&D campaign with Star Wars atmosphere

Use Star Wars books as references for era, places, factions, and story material, and keep D&D as the only rules engine. For a Clone Wars campaign, Rise of the Separatists is a 144-page hardcover sourcebook with player options, gear, vehicles, character profiles, and GM guidance. Edge Studio describes it as compatible with the Star Wars RPG lines; that claim is about those lines, not D&D.

What Edge Studio’s reprint statement means

In a June 9, 2022 announcement, Edge Studio said its listed reprints had “no appreciable differences” from the prior Fantasy Flight Games versions and remained compatible with everything FFG released. That statement can help when choosing among those reprints, but it does not say they are compatible with D&D. Read the Edge Studio announcement in that context.
